Live, from the cbs bay area studios. This is kpix5 news. A planes windshield cracked in midair. Tonight, the emergency for a San Francisco bound flight. That flight left new york city for a direct flight to sfo, but it had to stop in indianapolis. Brian webb talked to passengers that arrived hours late. Reporter the boeing is being checked out now to find out what went wrong. Passengers tell me the troubles began almost out of the blue. This is the crack that cause the commotion. Half the windshield shattered but still in place. At 500 miles an hour and 30,000 feet. Like a rock had hit a windshield or something. It was just like a car. It grows and grows. Reporter flight 766 took off from jfk direct to sfo. But as food was being served and movies getting started, trouble. There was turbulence. Reporter the pilot didnt think it was time to panic. Passengers tell me he was cool as a cucumber. The pilot came on and said his window add arced and shattered. Get our seats upright. Buckle up. But very calmly. Reporter the plane made an Emergency Landing in indianapolis, greeted by fire trucks ready to go. But the landing was smooth. Passengers were taken to a different plane, snapping some keepsake photos along the way. I was pretty shocked it was the front window of the plane. If i was sitting there flying 500 miles an hour at 30,000 feet with the cracking in front of you. Reporter four hours behind schedule, back in the bay area without a scratch, but with a good story to tell on a flight that was probably more frightening than they even realized. You never know. I mean, it is probably their job to be calm. What did you think . I think they were calm. Im really grateful that they did what they did. It could have been bad. Reporter the airline offered passengers discounts for their inconvenience, but everybody was very impressed with the crew and didnt seem upset at all. Live at sfo, brian webb, kpix5. A body pulled from the delta this afternoon is believed to be that of a missing boater. He and another man were thrown from a boat in brent wood. It is not clear what happened. We are hearing the boat may have hit a bridge or underwater debris. The second man was rescued and treated for minor injuries. A distracted driver is to blame for a crash that killed a boy. A woman was driving through manteca and reached for her cell phone. She slammed into the group killing a 14yearold boy. The other teens are recovering. The driver was arrested for vehicular manslaughter. A hit and run happened last night when two officers were stopped on the shoulder in 101 in san jose. They were issuing a traffic ticket when a silver sedan sideswiped their patrol car and hit one of the officers. That sedan then took off. It was very serious. It could have killed or injured the officers on scene. Obviously, its a felony hit an run. So it is very important we find this person. The officer that was hit is 25 years old, he is from san jose. He has been released from the hospital. San Francisco Police officer was hurt today when a chase ended in a crash. It started early this morning with an attempted robbery in the richmond district. Police were called out on reportsover shots fired after two men tried to rob a woman at gunpoint. The suspects rammed the Police Cruiser and then the suspects were arrested at the scene. The officer was not badly hurt. The feds have launched an investigation into the way uc berkeley handles reports of sexual assaults on campus. The investigation started after dozens of students filed a complaint telling the u. S. Department of education mishandled cases of Sexual Violence and claimed the university failed to adequately punish the people accused. Protesters rallied in Southern California today to keep the socalled pillow rapist out of their town. Keep him out of our city. We do not want him here. Christopher hubert admitted to raping at least 40 women including 15 in the bay area. He has been let out of prison twice only to reoffend. Now he is due for release at a state mental hospital. He wiz ordered back to the Lake Los Angeles area where me grew up. He will wear a gps ankle bracelet with heavy supervision. Protesters say that is not enough. He will do it again. It is not only frightening, it is devastating. He is in a mental institution. He has a mental problem. It is obvious. So we want him to stay in that institution. The protesters packed up their petitions in a pillow case to send to the judge. Divers have found a way inside the sunken ferry. More than a dozen bodies were discovered. 256 people are still missing. The captain of the ship has been arrested for charges of negligence and abandoning people in need. About 100 relatives of the missing passengers tried to walk to the president ial house in seoul, but Police Stopped them. They are demanding more action from the government. Today runners showed what boston strong is all about. The city kick off the festivities ahead of mondays historic boston marathon. Survivors of last years bombings along with other runners came out for the memorial walk. They went one more mile in tribute of those lost or injured in the bombing. A slow motion landslide is picking up speed now in wyoming. It has already slid one home in half. We see the danger that has crept in. But unlike a typical landslide where the earth shifts in an instant, these cracks have been creeping two weeks. Geologist jason rolfe has been studying the landslide. You could pretty much walk out from the living room onto the roof of the other side of the house. Reporter this time lapse video shows pieces of shale, clay, and mud moving down the landslide. They ruptured this walgreens parking lot we dont anticipate it will be a large catastrophic failure at the bottom where the whole slide will come down in one massive plug of material. Reporter engineers dont think anymore homes are endanger but they dont know when or if the mountain will fully collapse. So from sun up to sun down, residents are just watching and waiting. Environmental activists are butting heads with the oakland zoo over the plans to expand into a neighboring park. Don knapp on the growing pains. Reporter the oakland zoo scheduled 50 activities to celebrate earth day but while most earth day visitors came for the animals, this group came to the zoo for the local animals including newts, foxes, and the whip snake. Some of the species and rare plants they say will be harmed by huge zoo expansion into the park hand in its back door. Here we have very important habitat for at least one threatened species. And the zoo is planning to build on it. It is just crazy. Reporter this is the land protesters and the zoo are battling over. Nolan park. The zoo has plans for some 77 acres here. A great deal of effort to conserve the park, to improve the habitat that is out there right now. We are moving invase i plants, replanting with native grass and doing our best to be as responsible as we can. Reporter the zoo plans are approved and have survived a lisle challenge. Reporter the zoo works for an animals all over the world including the ones in the backyards. There are misunderstanding with some of the people and organizations.
