Transcripts For KPIX KPIX 5 News At 11pm 20141209

[instrumental music] live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. Freeway. We have breaking news tonight, interstate 80 shut down both directions in berkeley over two hours as protesters take over the freeway. Right now east bound lanes are still closed, but we are told they will reopen any minute. While the freeway was closed a woman went into labor. We just heard from the fire department. They found her and took her to the hospital. Christin ayers is next to i80. Whats going on . Reporter these protests started around 5 00 this evening and are still going strong tonight. You can still see video from chopper 5 of several dozen protesters still taking to the streets in berkeley tonight, a small group. It was much larger earlier today, up to 1,500 people, dwindled down to 1,000. At one point protesters took over interstate 80 walking several miles down the freeway. You can see lots of brake lights on i80 tonight all because those protesters decided to shut down the freeway. Protesters locked arms blocking both lanes of interstate 80 in berkeley preparing to march toward the bay bridge on the Third Straight day of protesters that have fanned across the city of berkeley. Officers were quick to respond blocking off a footbridge over the freeway. [ sirens ] reporter for a brief moment our cameras were caught between the protesters and the squirmish line. Officers using their batons to push hundreds of protesters back. A short distance away protesters actually stop an amtrak train from moving. Several protesters have slid themselves directly onto the tracks here putting their hands up and standing in the way of the train continuing here. As officers in riot gear block the freeway on ramp, we watched as 1 truck tried to drive on. Officers drew their guns. There was conflict over how to handle this protest after other marches over the weekend went to broken windows and arrests. This time around protesters staged peaceful sitins outside the Berkeley Police department. To the chagrin of some who wanted to do more. If we cant march in the streets, we support our ways on the streets peacefully and let them police us how three been. Reporter interstate 80 remains slowed down at this point. Again, some protesters have moved into emeryville, but thats still impacting traffic out here. We have seen agencies coming from Vacaville Police and joining help stop these protests. Right now we dont know exactly how many people were arrested. We do know tonight this evening was not marked by as many vandalisms as we saw before, but again these larger actions of shutting down the freeway and stopping trains are what distinguished this night from others. Back to you. Christin ayers in berkeley now. Well check in with andria borba at the toll plaza in oakland where the chp is defending the bay bridge. At theyre up reporter earlier tonight some of those protesters hopped the fence and made their way onto the bike path. As of right now, the chp is staged here east of the toll plaza at the bay bridge. I am told if the protesters try to take the bay bridge, they will stack their cars end to end, stop traffic and make their stands here, their skirmish line here at the bay bridge. You can see a bunch of them standing around. They are prepared for the possibility those protesters we saw in emeryville and berkeley blocking interstate 80 will try to make their way over to the bay bridge and they are prepared to stop them at that point. At this point, though, do you see any protesters in the area at all . Is there anybody within visual sight . Reporter no. We havent seen anybody within visual sight. At one point we saw the eastbound lanes of interstate 80 coming off the bay bridge. They appeared to slow down a bit. Traffic is moving again. We dont know if protesters had made their way onto the eastbound lanes. Thank you. This is what theyre up against. One of the protesters tweeted this picture. You can see the crowd trying to get through Police Barricades earlier tonight. Berkeleyprotests is trending on twitter tonight. Were seeing a lot of the commute chaos unfold in tweet like this one. The protests have brought i80 to a stop. Berkeley side tweeted photos of protesters chanting as a woman parked her truck on addison and essex to block the train and from trucks to actual people, this picture of the taken of protesters lying on the tracks staging a diein. So far we havent seen a repeat of last nights violence. This man was hit in the head with a hammer trying to keep demonstrators from breaking windows at a radioshack on shattuck avenue last night. Others came to his aid and wrapped his head in gauze before he was taken to the hospital. He is expected to be okay. Weve seen nfl players do it and tonight in new york nba stars showed their support as well. Lebron james and some other nba players wore protest shirts while they warmed up for the nets cavs game. I cant breathe were the words eric garner said before he died. James said that he wore the shirt as a shout out to garners family. If you got a lot of rain last week, just wait. The strongest storm in at least six years is headed our way now. The strongest when you combine the rain and wind which we will be coming up thursday. A flood watch already in effect thursday and friday for the entire bay area. Soil is saturated from last weeks rainfall. So any additional heavy rainfall which we will have may exacerbate a flooding problem and the highest risk will be in the north bay hills. You could see up to 8 inches of rain over two days. The bigger concern to me . The wind. A high wind watch is in effect for the entire bay area. Everybody with wind gusts 35 to 45 miles per hour, up to 60 along the coast and in the hills the wind gusts may hit 70 miles per hour. So a high impact for flooding, a high impact for wind and a very high impact for the commute. We are red across the board. The storm is still about 1,000 miles away, but its getting its act together and the latest computer model information i have right here suggests very strong winds and very heavy rainfall thursday. Well break down the rain region by region and talk more about the storm coming up. Tonight we have video you can always get up to the minute storm information on our website www. Kpix5. Com storm. Tonight we have video of Police Taking down a fan at le at levi stadium as the crowd screams at them to stop. Reporter this video does not show how it all started. Police say the fan was frustrated about waiting in a long line to get onto the main concourse during halftime here at levi stadium. So he vented to a stadium employee while he was drunk, used profanity and things started to get out of hand and police intervened. Dnt ll phone vide i need you to [ bleep ]. You need to back down. Reporter the man in the white pullover repeatedly tells an officer not to touch him as cops try to move him along through a crowd of fans. This happened at the pac12 championship friday. Seconds later one officer starts swinging his baton at the back of the mans leg. Another puts his hand around the guys neck as the crowd chances. One of the batons break during the takedown. Police eventually arrested 44 yearold mark wydon of eugene, oregon, for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. He was intoxicated. He was belligerent toward the officers and would not follow any of their directions. So the officers decided to eject him and he refused to be ejected. When they tried to escort him out, he pushed one of the officers. Thats what Santa Clara Police say you dont see in this cell phone video captured by a fan. Take off the sound and just watch the video without the sound. You will see that mr. Wyden is actively resisting officers and hes not complying with officers to be arrested. Reporter did your officers do everything by the book . Well, obviously our officers did enough what they felt they had to do to take him into custody. Reporter and police could not speak to whether those officers used Excessive Force because they say this case is still under review by the department. The fan suffered minor injuries and has been released from jail 10 days for his arraignment due in court in january. Betty yu, kpix5. Meanwhile nearly 100 fans were kicked out of yesterdays big raiders 9ers game because of behavior like this. Rival fans were throwing punches, throwing drinks in the stand. In all 93 people were ejected. 31 were arrested. Socalled torture report outlining the cias brutal interrogation tactics is set to be released tomorrow. Mark kelly tells us there fear tonight that it could put u. S. Embassies in harms way. Ken, this report has been held up for years now and on the eve of its release its being called practically an indictment of the cia. Ure report 2 17 8 josh earne, White House Press secretary been from the the report, 480 pages, expose an agency that since the september 11th attacks turned to torture to get alqaeda prisoners to talk. The white house has been from the beginning pushing for the release of this report and pushing for as much content as possible to be released. Reporter even so, the white house is aware lifting the veil on more than a decade of cia torture techniques could unlock a pandoras box of unrest for the american military. I think its critical that the American People and rest of the world know whats been going on. Reporter dean of Golden Gate Law School rachel van cleve supports releasing the report but not tomorrow. These are people already in harms way protecting the democratic ideals that we value and to exacerbate any potential harm to them is deeply troubling. Reporter sources tell cbs news the Senate Report argues the cia could have found bin laden without using some of the harsh tactics which included sleep deprivation, stress positions and the most extreme measure, waterboarding. Month. Benew senator Dianne Feinstein making sure to release the papers this month because in the new year a republican senator will chair the Senate Intelligence committee and in all likelihood this report would not see the light of day in that situation. Andria borba tonight on why it may be nearly impossible to stop them. Egin their retail plunder. Two of ast a rack of organized retail crime is a good description for this. Reporter in an instant four rainbow girls entered this store, scatter and begin their retail plunder. Two girls passed a rack of shoes, grabbed high end handbags and high tail it to the exit brushing off security and sales clerks. Theyre not the only ones involved. Reporter on another camera two more rainbow girls stuffing more handbags in their own. At the door theres an attempt to stop them, but its too late. By the struggle theyre outside with the merchandise. According to former fbi agent rick smith, the girls arent stealing the bags for their own use. A puppet master is fencing the designer wares.
