Any single one of these things can cause trouble for a tree or forest, but when you add them together insultly with the fuel of a simultaneously with the fuel of a four year drought, youre talking about something thats nothing but a tree disaster and it now covers a large swath of california. Weve estimated about 66 million statewide. Reporter 66 million dead trees, the worst in the bark beetle explosion in the foothills where thousands of acres every single pine tree has died. Pretty much in here its almost 100 mortality of the ponderosa pine. As for the future, even some drought relief might make some problems worse. Its coursing through the water and landscape. Reporter while a healthy rain season would slow the beetles, sudden oak death thrives in moisture. Its waiting for the ripe conditions and it will have explosive growth again. Reporter its a statewide catastrophe that has only intensified the debate over how californias forest strategy should evolve, but for tens of millions of trees, the damage is done and recovery will take decades. For some areas the worst may still lie ahead as california tries town tangle a crisis now unfolding across 32 million acres of forest land. We keep passing the buck really and it gets harder to have enough resources to solve the problem. Reporter Wilson Walker, kpix5. Dry out there for how many years and that causes the forest to do what its doing now try to rejuvenate itself. One year its bad, four years in a row is a significant problem.
