And from the outside, you can still see the evidence of what happened. A 27yearold oakland man in the home was hit. I heard one loud pop and my wife says dont go out there. I was going to go because i wanted to see what was going on. Reporter neighbors woke up to blood splattered on the sidewalk and chattered glass in their path. I walk out here every day. I walk my dog every single day. What i saw that was peculiar is there was all a van blocking the driveway. Nobody could drive in. Police say two guns were used to fire off eight shots. They had Little Information of robbers that got away in an armed car. It doesnt surprise me. You know, times are hard. People need money and theyll get it any way they can. Reporter police say there were four people inside the house at the time of the shooting. The man that was shot in the shoulder has been released from the hospital. A gunman opened fire on two Police Officers in east san jose. Tonight the suspect is being sought for attempted murder. Police say the gunman fired multiple rounds at the two foot patrol officers near luby and riply drive around 7 30 last night. Lets be very clear. These are not only Police Officers these are fathers, brothers, mentors in our community and ultimately Community Members and like everyone they have families that they want to go home to safely at night. The officers did not get hit and they did not return fire. Tonight the police union is offering a 10,000 reward to help catch the gunmen. For months, the tiny island of belvedere has been talking about what to do after the growing population of the deer. Those neighbors are concerned about the safety of their roads, their yards. One thing theyre discussing is capturing and sterilizing the deer but many do not want that. Maybe a fence, like a 10 foot fence. Now youre saying replace the fence, whos going to pay for that . What about the people who cant pay for those new fences. Everybody is just talking about it, its time to do something. Do something people and they dont say what to do. Reporter people keep a close eye on the Russian River, rising waters can flood the towns. But just upstream theres another threat when it rains. Found in the red piles of dirt, bordering a creek that runs into the city. One of the largest mercury mines in california it closed in the early 1970s after operating for more than a century. The mine owners are long gone but large piles of rock and dirt remain. That worries those who live near by. I have driven by the mercury mine. I noted that the piles dont seem to be covered obviously from the road. Some sort of plastic material so when it rains it doesnt contaminate the water way. Reporter he knows a lot about mercury. He inspected it in the 70s. When mercury plants shut down instead of following epa regulations. He contacted kpix after another story we did. He wanted to know if officials knew that the mercury was poisoning this fish and the fish people eat. Our investigation prompted the Regional WaterQuality Control board to conduct tests in the area for the first time and their results. The levels that we found were about four times the levels of what would be considered a hazardous waste. Reporter four times the levels. The board discovered some of the mercury was going directly into the creek. When we first brought this to your attention. You guys moved on it. Correct, yeah. Did the testing, got the results and now moving forward. Correct. And thats our hope, you know our job here is to protect water quality. When youre under, 18, 20 years old your brain is developing and mercury retards that development. Reporter all the fish had mercury levels well over the epa limit when tested years ago. But the state has not posted any warnings along the river. Studies have shown eating contaminated fish poses a significant risk. Eating even half a fish that was contaminated with mercury only a couple of times a week for a short time could reduce your iq. Reporter Mount Jackson on their list and did nothing about it. We asked the epa why no action was taken in 1989. They sent us this statement. Though mercury was found these waters were not consumed. The site did not qualify for the National List and was given a no further remedial action plan. Over many months its a slow process. We set agencies and state agents they moved with glacier speed. I know i used to work there. Reporter as for solutions, Property Owners may have to foot the bill to cover the piles of dirt.
