Tonight dangerous rockslides, highways shut down, emergency rescues and creeks overflowing, tonight the storm damage all around the bay area. Tonight hundreds of people told to fact up and get out immediately pack up and get out immediately after a Northern California levee breach. Also tonight this giant new waterfall is pouring down in full force right behind some bay area homes. Good evening. Im ken bastida. Im elizabeth cook. Right now some parts of the bay area are under a flash Flood Warning. Meteorologist paul deanno begins our Team Coverage tonight. Thankfully the storm has exited to the east, but in its wake scattered showers and there will be plenty overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. Most of those scattered showers are in the north bay right now, marin county, napa county, sonoma and lake mendocino county, one just exiting napa, one right over novato and petaluma is getting more scattered showers tonight. Mainly dry from San Francisco south to san jose. In the Santa Cruz Mountains theyre also drying out, just a few scattered showers. The storm has left 6 inches of rainfall in the Santa Cruz Mountains today, specifically boulder creek, almost 4 inches of new rain for kentfield, nearly 3 for danville and windsor, nearly 2 inches of rain in the south bay including campbell and San Francisco nearly 2 inches of rainfall downtown. Flash Flood Warning continues until tomorrow morning for the Pacheco Creek and a flash Flood Warning continues until 8 00 tomorrow morning for the Mark West Creek in sonoma can. Reporter ken, the rain continues tonight and so does the drama. You can see all these folks lined up. They are trying to get past this road block to get onto highway 17. That wont happen. This highway is closed because of a rockslide. On the other side of the Santa Cruz Mountains we found some flooding. The driving rain has once again driven the San Lorenzo River out of its banks. A small stretch of st. Bernard street in Paradise Park is under water once more. The floodwaters are lapping at the front yards. The man who lives here tells me off camera that last time a couple weeks ago when it flooded, he got 2 feet of water inside his home. Tonight its flooding again, but it doesnt look like it will get that high. Also we found this active rockslide along highway 17. You can see everything from small rocks to larger boulders cascading off the hillside near los gatos. Police closed southbound highway 17. One boulder hit the side of this jeep. The driver had minor injuries. Geologists say all this rain is lubricating the already saturated soil triggering slides faster than crews can pick up the mess. Were tired. Were tired. Our crews have one day a week off if theyre lucky since mid december. Reporter even when those crews arent around, theres still work to being done. After this large tree fell on highway 17 about a dozen people got out of their cars, regular folks, some with chainsaws and pitched in to chop branches and clear debris. They had that lane cleared in a couple hours. Folks here in the Santa Cruz Mountains insist on finding the Silver Lining in all these dark clouds. Everybody else is crying because theres too much rain and yeah, theres some damage that will get done, but its still great. We need it. Reporter highway 17 closed southbound and the chp tells me that will likely stay that way all night long. Its too dark and dangerous to try and stabilize that hillside. You saw all those rock coming down. So thats going to be like that for hours. The only way to go around this is through watsonville which im told might be as many as two hours of a commute right now. Reporting live joe vasquez, kpix5. Tonight a levee breach in San Joaquin County along the San Joaquin River south of manteca. 500 people were forced to evacuate hole to head to Higher Ground. In told to head to Higher Ground. In the past couple hours the office of Emergency Services said crews halted the breach. Mandatory evacuations are in place until the area is deemed safe. Police cars are coming by saying we got to evacuate, so just trying to get as much valuables out as we can. The community is mostly farm and ranches. Tonight the red cross set up an Emergency Shelter for those affected. In san jose tonight about three dozen mobile homes have flooded or are in danger of flooding after the coyote creek overflowed its banks this afternoon. Theyre trying to pump out water as fast as they can. This is the third time for us. So were going to be pros at it, but its not a good thing. We do have a few things packed. Weve heard the creek might still come over. So were ready in case we have to evacuate. Late word is the creek is expected to rise until tomorrow morning. The creek rose so fast earlier three people were rescued. Two Homeless People were stranded after water levels rose around them. Crews paddled out onto a raft to save them. Shortly after they rescued a third man who was trapped in the creek. Two of the people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. And some people of morgan hill were startled to see this out their home, a raging waterfall. Water is gushing down the anderson dam spillway into the coyote creek. The Water District predicts that creek could breach its banks tonight or tomorrow. The San Jose Municipal Golf Course has turned into a river of sorts tonight. Heavy rain completely flooded the area. Water appears a few feet high in some places. A large tree came down in campbell hitting the roof of an apartment building. The recents were completely sheer roots were completely sheered off and exposed. Kpix5s Christin Ayers is in pleasanton tonight. Reporter the rain has stopped tonight, but the flooding is still in effect. You can see some road closures here. This is sycamore road. Crews have been out here with leave equipment trying to clean up. Weve seen this and a lot worse throughout the east bay tonight. In danville the San Ramon Creek has spilled over its banks filling streets that are increasingly risky to drive. Heavy rain sent water inching up driveways and had people who live here scrambling for sandbags. Weve been here 27 years. Ive never seen anything like this. We see all the bridges that cross over the creeks are up to the very bottom of the bridge level. Reporter al need a creek near niles canyon is also swollen running wild. The last several hours the squeak has risen rapidly. Central creek as risen rapidly. Central Alameda County is still under a flash Flood Warning. Part of niles canyon road is closed. Palomares sim passable. Flooding on 880 north is impassable. Flooding on 880 north near fremont is closed. A landslide threatens a nearby transmission tower. Photos show the mud has slid 3 feet in a matter of weeks. The intense rains have been causing great saturation of the soil and thats how this all came to be. Reporter now flash Flood Warnings in this area have been extended throughout the evening. The latest Emergency Alert says it will be in effect in this area until 12 45 a. M. Live in pleasanton Christin Ayers, kpix5. In the north bay rain is not helping crews trying to repair highway 37 in novato. They were out there today again clearing away mess left behind from recent storms. The highway remains shut down from major flooding. In tiburon this mudslide blocked Paradise Drive near trestle glen boulevard. Marin county crews used bulldozers to try to clear the scene. In novato this mudslide threatened a home. Crews hoped to block rain with tarps from making the damage even worse. Theres a home just beneath the slope. In San Mateo County skyline boulevard completely shut down at sweat road, the reason again mudslides and downed power lines and also some toppled trees. Pg e and sheriffs units are on the scene, unclear when that road will reopen. Cate cauguiran is in San Mateo County tonight keeping a close eye on the Belmont Creek as well. Reporter were also getting big gusts of wind through this area, but right now were at where Belmont Creek flows underneath 101 and you can look for yourself at these water levels, just a little more than a foot below the roadway. Were getting lucky just looking at whats happening now, but we could be wrong. So i hope people are prepared. Reporter ryan schmidt used to water for the santa clara water valley district. Now a belmont resident he said channels into the bay need more maintenance. A lot of them are cement channels, but if theyre filled with sediment and rock, then their flood carrying capacity is reduced. Reporter earlier this evening people who live in San Mateo County or passing through got text alerts warning of possible flooding. San mateo county set up these sandbagging stations for homeowners in the area. At one point they alerted them to move to Higher Ground if flooding were to occur. Closer to the coast in pacifica the rain came down, but for these guys the surf was up. Its one of the few places where the wind is not messing everything up. So its been fun. Reporter a major concern for this area, sinkholes. This one just. Ed just patched up from the last major storm. Back in belmont live the water levels are high but not flooding stage. Cbs5s da lin had a sneaker wave slam into him as he was preparing to go live, the wave about as tall as da lin is. Luckily he was a good sport. Tonight part of the road leading to the Lick Observatory in Mount Hamilton in Santa Clara County is gone washed away. All thats left is this gaping hole. In san jose this 40foot tree toppled onto a home. Part of the fence came down with it at husted and brookston avenues. Here these parked cars are completely submerged after the Santa Rita Creek rose rapidly. The water gushed right into peoples homes. In the Central Valley crews scrambling to get ahead of Mother Nature the first time in 20 years. The Don Pedro Reservoir spillway had to be opened up. The turlock irrigation district posted this video today of the water gushing down into the tuolumne river, but first crews had to bulldoze a path for that overflow. The reservoir is now dumping millions of gallons of water into the river. Nine of the states major reservoirs are now at average or above average levels for this time of year. That is the highest total since 2011. Taking a live look at sfo right now at least 117 flights were canceled today. 372 others were delayed. A ground flow program is in effect until 2 a. M. And at last check more than 28,000 pg e customers across the bay area are without power. The majority of them are in the south bay. Pg e crews from out of state are called in to help with repairs. In Southern California tonight crews have worked nonstop to patch up that massive sinkhole in union city. All lanes of Laurel Canyon road have been closed to install a sewer bypass line. They hope to have a temporary fix in place for the morning commute. A permanent fix could take several week. That sinkhole opened up weeks. That sinkhole opened up friday night. Its about 20 feet deep, 30 feet wide. Firefighters used a ladder to pull one of the guys to safety. That guy is okay tonight. Tonight there is new outcry against an ultra conservative writer and veronica de la cruz reports this time its conservatives who wont let him speak. Thats right, liz. The Brietbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos has faced intense criticism before, but now conservatives canceled an appearance by him after comments he made that appeared to condone pedophilia. A few week ago a speech by high low at uc berkeley was chance milo at uc berkeley was canceled after protests turned violent and there was extensive property damage, but milo was unscathed. He talked about pedophilia dismissing the notion of consent and suggesting children as young as 13 can have healthy sexual relationships with adults. This week sources say Homeland Security secretary john kelly is expected to issue tough new Immigration Enforcement guidelines that would among other things authorize the immediate return of many immigrants captured at the mexican border, expedited deportation of any undocumented immigrant in the country for less than two years and the hiring of 10,000 new immigration and enforcement agents and 5,000 Border Patrol officers. People are just going to be picked up and swept away without a hearing. There are going to be so many mistakes that are made with that kind of system. Earlier today from his mara lago resort President Trump announced Army Lieutenant general hr mcmaster as his new National Security advisor. A man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience.
