Live from the cbs bay area studios, this is cbs 5 news. A crowd spills out into the streets of San Francisco in a massive show of support for science. Jackie ward was with the crowd and says they had a clear messages for President Trump. Reporter as part of a movement that happened all over the country today, these bay area residents stood together in the name of science. Science is under threat more so than it ever has been. Reporter thousands of people met at a rally in Justin Herman plaza to oppose budget cuts that would slash the e. P. A. s budget by 31 percent in face fiscal year 2018. Im not okay with trump defunding science. Were a culture thats moved forward because of science and its a big step backwards. Reporter despite a lot of antitrump rhetoric, speaker adam salve advantage its not just a savage said thats not the point. Its not just conservative versus democrat. Reporter many here also spoke out against the trump administrations executive orders on immigration and want the scientists who want to come or stay in america to continue their work. Its not just about President Trump and his administrations attack on science. I think its also about making sure the people that practice science look like the world theyre practicing it on. Reporter while organizers are thrilled about the turnout, they hope people continue this feeling and advocate for science every day. The San Francisco event was one of several massive marchs held across the country. Crowds also gathered in los angeles, chicago, and st. Paul to celebrate science. And President Trumps 100th day in office is coming up next saturday. Today he and the first lady presented a purple heart to a sergeant injured in afghanistan. The surprise visit came as the president tries to beat the clock on some Campaign Promises like repealing obamacare and ending illegal immigration in 100 days. Trump said in an interview yesterday that Health Care Reform is coming and a tax reform proposal could be announced as early as wednesday. Police are searching for a suspect in a deadly Motel Shooting in san jose. Gun fire erupted at a motel 6 on the alameda overnight. The two victims are suspected to survive. Reporter what a weekend in san jose with several events happening at the same time, including the sharks who played behind me and just a couple of blocks away an event that threw in tens of thousands drew in tens of thousands of people. Reporter but likely the biggest draw to downtown san jose is the Second AnnualSilicon Valley comiccon. The event is expected to attract more than 60,000 fans than it did last year. I love the science part of it here and the fact they brought nasa and everything in. And being in Silicon Valley, theres just so Much Technology here. Volunteers helped clean teeth, fill cavities or pull teeth that couldnt be saved. The California Dental Association set it up, and its geared toward people that have no dental insurance and little money to spare. I greatly appreciate it. I dont think i can thank them enough honestly. I dont know how to thank them enough. Sorry. Including some who got an estimated 3 out of 10 people in california have trouble getting dental care. Many are children, including some that got free check ups today. In the east bay, people tired of seeing trash pile up in their neighborhoods took charge today. Reporter Illegal Dumping is an epidemic in oakland. Many neighbors in recent years turned their anger into action. To get clean sometimes you have to get down and dirty. Reporter volunteers are using this earth day to remind people to stop complaining and do something to fix the problem. We shouldnt always rely on city hall to fix things. Reporter we saw a lot of different groups cleaning up throughout the city today. It feels good cleaning up my own community. Reporter from these teenagers picking up bitter on international boulevard to adults removing trash at a homeless encampment. The more that people take a part and other people see that, we can be a part of a Culture Shift allowing other people also to stop dumping and be a part of cleaning up the city. Reporter in a period of five months, volunteers with the Oakland Community organizations picked up 24 tons of trash from the streets of oakland. Its going to make a dent. It didnt happen overnight, and it wont get solved overnight. Reporter this group removed enough trash to fill up two huge dumpsters. It was on sidewalks, parks, medians, i mean, its disgusting. Reporter they say people should treat every day like its earth day. Volunteers say you dont have to wait for the nexts earth day to make a difference. It knocked out power to several homes in the area. Police from walnut creek are looking for three guy that is smashed up a Downtown Business dressed adds construction workers. As construction workers. They walked into the watch company and told the owner they were there to shut off the power. One suspect then sprayed the owner with pepper spray and another smashed a display case with a baseball bat. The owner was able to chase them off before they stole anything. They drove off with a black Dodge Challenger with paper plates. And a horse that took a tumble down a cliff last year was reunited with the fire crews that saved him and his trainer. Betty yu was there. Reporter today daniel is a healthy horse. More than 2200 pounds and full of muscle, but last june he looked like this. On his side for hours after tumbling 20 feet down a ravine off cold canyon road. Hes a clydesdale, and much bigger than a normal sized horse, which means hes tougher to rescue. For the First Time Since that night he reunited with the men from Alameda Fire Department who spent hours recovering him. He spent weeks at the large animal intensive car unit. It was a care unit. It was a little touch and go because he had an injured leg, so we were just hoping for the best, and obviously today is a great day. Any time we can, you know, leave on a happy note and bring some closure thats good. Reporter veterinarian carol orman was the first to assess daniels injury. There were times we didnt know if we were going to make it, but we dont quit. Reporter the ranch where daniel stays helped host the thank you lunch for firefighters. Seeing them here is actually an emotional thing for me because it was a really flightenning thing to frightening thing to think the horse wouldnt maying it, and that was a really make it, and that was a really tough thing to go through.
