Good evening veron now at 11 00, oakland city streets lit up like daylight. The evidence of illegal fireworks as strong as ever this 4th of july. Im veronica de la cruz. Darkness falls and the skies light up. Chopper 5 over oakland tonight where illegal fireworks shows were evident as far as the eye could see. Chris is live in oakland for us where police have been busy tracking down the people setting them off, and you can still hear the boom. Reporter yeah, there was a boom really close to us just a couple of seconds ago. That was the sound of illegal fireworks happening here in oakland. You can just about count on it every single 4th of july holiday, and looking over my shoulder you can see the fireworks going off every direction. People say it sounds like a war zone, and it seems theres not much authorities can do. In oakland today the fireworks blasted off early. Illegal fireworks shows erupting overhead all day. And into the night. Well before the professional fireworks at the coliseum, chopper 5 captured illegal fireworks lighting up the oakland sky. Its not safe. Reporter this woman wanted her kids to have an alternative to dangerous fireworks, so she threw a party at a family members home with barbecue and a bounce house. We dont want the kids afraid of the 4th of july. Reporter but fireworks booming a few blocks away still had some of the children on edge. It sounds like an actual gunshot. Thats when i get scared. I get so scared sometimes because its unexpected. Reporter authorities tried to drive home the message that people that set off fireworks will face consequences. Theyve stepped up patrols in neighborhoods where technology reported fireworks and celebratory gun fire last year, and theyre urging anyone hearing fireworks going off to call oaklands Nonemergency Police line, but neighbors say its clear police are simply out noned, and tonight this mom told us shes not taking any chances. I think tonight is definitely going to be dangerous, so well dismantle everything we set up so people can get home safely. Reporter Oakland Police are saying tonight if you call the nonemergency line to report illegal fireworks theyll try and send a patrol car over. Things are busy and they have their hands full. All right, thank you. Joe is live in San Francisco where folks have been enjoying the legal fireworks, but these werent exactly lighting up the sky right . Reporter yeah, wasnt exactly brilliant. So then just how bad were the San Francisco fireworks of 2017 . Much of the crowd started leaving well before the show was even over. It was kind of foggy, but they werent that nice. But the finale was kind of nice. We saw clouds. Just clouds and mist. And we were drunk. We were drunk, right [ laughter ] a firework went off on the pier and we all scattered off that. Tens of thousands of people poured into the fairgrounds for the fireworks. The gates were closed at 6 00 to keep crowds from overflowing. We dont want them to wait an hour in line to get on a ride or a corn dog. We want them to come, have a great time while theyre here and have an easy exit at the end of the night to go on tomorrow back to work and everything else. And no problem for those that couldnt make it out tonight. The fair is actually going to be open until sunday. A north korea Intercontinental Ballistic Missile capable of reaching at least part of united states. And this one only traveled 600 miles because it was launched at an extremely high angle, but it flew for 37 minutes, long enough to be an intercontinental missile. Launched on a standard trajectory it would have carried over 4,000 miles. Far enough to reach alaska. One test does not mean north korea suddenly has a reliable Nuclear Weapon capable of reaching us soil.
