It was pretty good. So why not. [ laughter ] we have had some heavy rain moving through over the last 30 minutes or so. I didnt say we didnt. No, you didnt. But did you say it was nice. I guess rain is nice, for some folks. Heres a look at hidef doppler. Lets show you whats happening outside. Over the last four hours or so watch what happens around 3 a. M. Just ahead of that hidef doppler sign. You can see that . Lightning strikes there. Thats right. Well see we have seen some thunderstorms throughout the morning and well continue to see the possibility of some instability in the atmosphere throughout the morning. Right now, the heaviest rainfall in our region north bay, santa rosa, rohnert park, saint helena, seeing moderate rainfall with some pockets of heavier rain there as well farther south. Similar story right along the southern portion of the peninsula heading through the south bay. So san mateo, fremont, los altos seeing some showers and those showers will continue to head east. Speaking of east, take a look at the snow on hidef doppler. Sierra still under a winter storm warning through 2 00 this afternoon. Heavy rain along the western slope and again some instability there thunderstorms there for the Central Valley and the western slope of the sierra. Temperatures in the 40s and 50s throughout the bay so a mild start temperature ways. Keep the umbrella handy. Scattered showers today. Then storm 2 arrives tonight through friday. Thats expected to bring rain and wind although not as much rain and not as high winds as we saw with yesterdays storm. But you add that to the totals we already saw and we could see some problems in terms of flooding certainly ponding on the roads and waterways. Storm number 3 moves through on sunday after the lingering showers on saturday. Well talk more about that and time it out coming up in a bit. But first were timing out your commute. Thank you. Kenny, go. [ laughter ] all right. Lets start with the Altamont Pass. If you are driving from 205 from tracy youre moving nicely at 64 Miles Per Hour. But it does slow down to 30 Miles Per Hour at north flynn road, frees up through livermore, then slow traffic on the dublin interchange. And heres a live look at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. Traffic moving nicely but you should expect about a 14minute commute between 880 and 101. And also, high wind advisory across the span there with some wet roads. That rain is starting to sprinkle down a little bit. Heres a live look at the nimitz freeway. Looking good in both directions. On 238 from san leandro to the maze in oakland that will take you about 16 minutes. So a pretty normal commute out there. Just slow down because the roads are still wet. And if you are taking the 880 to the toll plaza, carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze 18 minutes. No delay through the toll plaza. Metering lights turns on at 5 30. Look at the rain and high wind advisory so take it easy this morning as you head out the door. Okay. Lets talk about the north bay. Highway 12 between highway 121 and watt may road and highway 121 between 12 and 8th street eat are closed from the rain in schellville. Also still closed. Pg e is replacing power polls in other areas. Back to you. Thank you. There is a lot of damage left behind from last nights storm and it could only get worse as the next round moves in today. Kpix 5s anne makovec reports San Francisco where they are worried bay rockslide. Reporter yeah. You can go no further up the hill here behind me. This is the closure at oshaughnessy boulevard. It is closed at malta because there is concern about a landslide here and this is why. An unstable cliff looming above the rocky slope on the west side of the road across from Glen Canyon Park. Emergency work has been under way since yesterday. Crews have been knocking loose rocks off the hillside. They are going to do a lot more of that today. And then they will put up new fencing and barricades. They are hoping to have that hillside shored up by tomorrow. Some good news for commuters in the far east bay meantime. The antioch bridge is back open. It was closed at around 9 00 last night because several trees fell across the bridge blocking the road. They have been clearing them all night and they opened the bridge 8 hours ahead of schedule. So highway 160 between oakley and rio vista is back open. But it is this combination of rain, wind and the already saturated ground that causes these problems we have been seeing and we are going to see more of over the next few days. Live in San Francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. Its a race against time to fix a massive sinkhole. It opened up about a work ago on miner road. Crews have been working around the clock to try to repair it but wet weather isnt helping. Yesterday, crews secured a water main so that residents can still get their water. And they hope to have it repaired next month costing around a million dollars. And in santa cruz county, crews have been clearing up debris about heavy rain and windy areas. Its tough commutes in the county and they are having problems again today. A massive rockslide made a mess of the road yesterday just two miles south of highway 35. And near the East Foothills of san jose, a giant tree fell on to Mount Hamilton road. Inauguration events begin in washington, dc today. President elect donald trump and Vice President elect mike pence will attend a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National cemetery. Thats followed by a concert at the Lincoln Memorial where mr. Trump will deliver remarks. He attended two dinners last night, one honoring pence, and the other honoring his cabinet nominees. Some 900,000 people are expected to arrive in dc over the next few days. A wide range of Law Enforcement agencies with thousands of officers are taking on the massive security challenge and they are work is creating a challenge to getting around the city. We recognize this event and the ensuing security arrangements may cause inconveniences to the citizens of washington, d. C. For all the preparation, the event itself will be a modest affair than those in recent years. Bay area teachers plan to take part in a national day of action just one day before president elect donald trump takes office. Some bay area teachers will be joining students and parents by marching in front of their schools right before class starts and they are going to be marching about immigration and here is why. They want all Public Schools in california to declare themselves safe havens for students. They dont want immigration or race to determine their success. This, they claim, is to stand up to president elect donald trump one day before his inauguration. Some are concerned about his nominee for secretary of education betsy devos. I think most teachers feel that somebody that, um, has not, um, educated her own kids in Public Schools nor do i think has she gone herself to a public school, um, would understand, um, our the way were organized and how we, um, educate our students. Lets give her a chance to, um, show the support that she has shown in grand rapids by being supportive of not just charters and other kinds of reform but the grand Rapids Public School system. Reporter she was questioned about her qualifications yesterday by controversy and made remarks about how some schools need guns to protect themselves from grizzly bears. She is already controversial for what she has done from schools in the past. You will hear more from her in the next halfhour. Some bay area teachers will take part in a march. They dont want students and parents to march alone today. Again, their message about immigration one day before president elect Donald Trumps inauguration as president of the united states. Maria medina, kpix 5. Federal reserve chief janet yellen will be taking part in stanford at an Economic Policy event today. She made it clear the fed would operate independently of the white house i have never had a situation where, um, a member of the administration has, um, tried in any way to pressure me for any reason, um, about the stance of monetary policy. Speaking at the Commonwealth Club yellen had some encouraging news. You can see here some buses and cars got stuck in the high water. The water well above that mans waist. Bus service will be spotty this morning until some of the flooding goes down. More wicked weather this time in italy where an avalanche caused by earthquakes has blocked roads and stranded families about two hours south of san moreno. You can see here, firefighters working to reach those families on skis. The avalanche knocked out power lines, also causing trouble for rescue crews. One man confirmed dead after a barn roof collapsed in the snow. Another 30 people thought to be dead in a hotel that was buried in an avalanche. You can see from the videos here the snow and ice in the hallways of the building. Persistence paid off for an oklahoma woman and her two sisters who searched more than two decades for their mother. 53yearold Shelly Suzanne Jennings was just found near modesto 23 years after she disappeared. It turns out she had Mental Health issues and runins with the law during that time. Jennings eldest daughter had distributed missing persons flyers in californias Central Valley where jennings was last seen. A passenger on a bus recognized her from the flyers and called police. The rain has calmed down a bit now since our last report here so from the carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze that will take you about 19 minutes along 80 westbound and if you are traveling through the toll plaza expect no delays just yet those metering lights should turn on in a few minutes around 5 30 so well keep an eye on that but also a high wisconsin across the span so im sure youre keeping both hands on the wheel and caltrans will remind you make sure those windshield wiper are running those headlights are on and defrosters ready to warm up. 238 san leandro to the maze thats 16 minutes a normal commute and the southbound side of 880 to highway 92, heres the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. Expect high winds but traffic is moving smoothly. All right. Now also in the peninsula, woodside highway 84 between grandview drive and highway 35 is still under oneway Traffic Control. This is from last weeks storm. Its still affecting us now. Pg e is out there trying to replace power poles but im sure the rain is stalling them a bit so its still closed with one lane in both directions so give yourself some extra time to get through this area here in woodside. The Altamont Pass is slow. You have 60 Miles Per Hour off 205 so thats not too bad but then you have those slow moving conditions at 30 Miles Per Hour once you hit north flynn road. We saw very heavy just a few minutes ago pass through the bay bridge and we are getting a little break. You can expect that throughout the day scattered showers. Likely going to see that throughout the morning. So keep that in mind. Could see some thunderstorms. Hidef doppler showing the rain that was just drenching San Francisco much of the peninsula is now pushing east towards east bay so fremont, hayward, oakland, seeing pockets of heavier rain now as we push east. You can see where it is. San ramon get ready. Concord get ready for some light to moderate rainfall heading your way. Livermore light showers moving your way, as well. Some of the heaviest rain now along the west slope of the sierra and plenty of snow on hidef doppler. Winter storm warning is in effect through 2 00 this afternoon. We are looking at a couple of feet possible, some of the higher peaks. And then a couple of inches possible above 4500 feet. But definitely travel delays likely. Again, as i just said, we saw some heavy rainfall here a few minutes ago and now we are seeing a break but you can see the slick roads there. And anticipate that throughout your morning commute. Driving along dry conditions and then just pockets of heavy rain. Temperature wide 40s and 50s in the area mild to start your day. We are looking at this is storm 2 of three storms that will be moving through overnight tonight into tomorrow. So right now, a break between storms and then another storm right now waiting in the wings. This will move through towards the end of the weekend. Well time it all out for you. Sunday, this one appears right now to be very similar to yesterday. So heavy rain high winds i do anticipate more likely chance of advisories flood advisories, high wind advisories with the sunday system as opposed to what well see for tomorrow.
