An Emergency Landing for a jetliner that took off this morning from san jose about an hour into the flight heading to phoenix, smoke filling the cabin. Reporter dave lopez on what happened and one passengers act of kindness. We looked round and we saw thick smoke bluegray smoke and coming from where . It was coming from behind us. Then it smelled funny and so i closed the vent and then theres smoke coming up from the side of the, um, the under the seat. Reporter smoke in the plane not exactly what you want to see or smell when you are 30,000 feet in the air. People started yelling out and, um, pounding on the side of the plane and saying, smoke, smoke we got to the back of the plane and the stewardess was great. She gave us wet towels to put over our mouths. The oxygen masks came down. Reporter the passengers said there was no panic. This photo shows a passenger with his oxygen mask on. It was hard to breathe. Reporter this video taken by a passenger in the terminal shows 8 people being evaluated by the fire department. Eight people complained of breathing issues. As people moved to the front of the plane to get away from the smoke, a man in first class saw a woman standing with her baby. Ironically, its not stormy outside but theres a storm close enough within hundreds of miles to feedback a nice long westerly swell which will kick up the waves around mavericks which is a half mile offshore and that one specific spot will see waves tomorrow 34 to 38 feet. Einstein predicted them a century ago and today scientists said they have finally detected them. Reporter rachel crane tells us how the waves work. Reporter for over a century, physicists have been trying to confirm the existence of Gravitational Waves. One of the last remaining pieces of einsteins theory of relativelity. He proposed that accelerating masses such as two neutron stars or two black holes caused distortions in the fabric of the universe. When those masses eventually merge they set off a cataclysmic event that shoots off tons of Gravitational Waves into space. He predicted that these waves travel across the cosmos at the speed of light changing the shapes of the matter they encounter. In theory, these waves would eventually hit earth. But their detection has eluded us. An observe called ligo has been used the most sophisticated optics, lasers and seismic isolation since 19 88 to fine them. They operate twin detectors in livingston, louisiana, and hanford, washington. The detectors are shaped like an l. And they shoot lasers down vacuum tubes that are 2. 5 miles long. If grave every gravitation national if Gravitational Waves pass through, the distance they travel a very small amount, ten to the 19th negative meters or list. Unlike radiowaves and invisible light.
