The tags at city hall that happened last night were removed by city crews but the ones that happened right across the street at 4th street pizza are still there. They have to report it in and hopefully the paid contractor will come down and paint over those graffiti tags on the business itself. Live in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. San francisco is again making history. The city is on the verge of becoming the first in the country to offer six weeks of fully paid parental leave. Kpix 5s joe vazquez on the groundbreaking policy and you have late word from the mayor about whether he is going to back it, joe . Reporter right. The board of supervisors unanimously passed it but earlier today, the mayor said he wasnt sure if he would support this bill but then were intense negotiations at city hall so the amendments were passed that are a little more favorable to Small Businesses. Now the Mayors Office says he will sign it into law. Babies in San Francisco often end up in child care within a few weeks of birth. Even though the state of california pays 55 of a parents salary for six weeks, thats not enough for many parents in this expensive city. Many families end up opting not to take the full leave. We need to stop forcing parents to make the terrible decision about whether to bond food on the table. Ther to put reporter supervisor scott weiners legislation passed unanimously by the board of supervisors today. It requires San Francisco companies with more than 20 employees to pitch in the other 45 giving parents a 100 of their salary for six weeks. Fully paid parental leave in this country is embarrassing. We are, um, in the company of swaziland, and three others that dont provide fully paid maternity leave. We need to pave the way. Paying that 45 means you can get the diapers and, you know, the pacifiers and the baby food and all the things that go into raising a child. Reporter Small Businesses are opposed especially since it allows employees who work as few as 8 hours a week to get the fully paid leave and they only had to have been employees for a total of 180 days. We want to help families succeed. We also do not want to extinguish our successful Small Businesses so we have to have that right balance. Reporter depending on the size of the business, there are three start dates for the new law. The businesses with employees of more than 50 employees will begin january of next year. Reporting live in San Francisco, im joe vazquez, kpix 5. Twitter is going further. It is guaranteeing parents up to 20 weeks of fully paid time off. That is for new parents. Caltrans says possible repair work would mean lane closures in the eastbound lower deck of the bay bridge tunnel. The 1800foot span of the bay bridge tunnel is under the gun. More specifically, the radar gun. Its comparable to doing an mri on the tunnel. Reporter with the help of the federal highway administration, caltrans is looking for corrosion and cracks in the tunnels lower deck like the one that caused concrete to fall on the road late january directly in the path of drivers. Caltrans says some cracks were inches long, others feet long. And there could be more. So today crews are using three types of special devices to find out, sound echoing technology, groundpenetrating radar, and this one that looks like a camera is infrared radar. Gives you a real good idea of whats going on about a foot into the concrete. So that way you can tell if the the concrete it may look sound on the outside but you can tell about problems ahead of time. Reporter caltrans says there is no one cause. Engineers believe it could be a combination of rainwater from the upper deck and vibrations from cars traveling on and over it. Its an 80yearold structure. Youre going to have some cracks and chipped concrete. Theres never one single bullet. Reporter caltrans saysed last time they did a visual inspection was last july and they say engineers havent done a test involving tapping the concrete with a hammer since 2004. Once one issue is dealt with on the bay bridge another one comes up. How do you assure drivers that the bridge is safe . Well, if it werent, we he would close it. Granted, thats draconian, but safety is the top priority. Reporter caltrans says repair work could improve replacing parts if not all the wall inside the tunnel, but they did want to assure the drivers that repair work would be done at night and during off peak hours during the day.
