It was demolition day in san rafael. Crews working to remove whats left of a house destroyed by a mudslide. There was no way to stop the tons of mud that pushed through the home. It happened along Mountain View avenue in san rafael yesterday. But now, kpix 5s emily turner says, that same hillside has neighbors worried their homes could be next. Reporter all along the block is this red running reminder of what happened here. Its remnants. Hillside that now sits on top of a house. Yesterday, this was a house. Today, its a destination for the curious, coming to check out the mudslide that flattened it and others are here looking for work. These hills, they get really wet. The clay cant hold it and it comes down. This is the result of what happened. Reporter thats where dave demming of demmings demolition comes in, to help clear it out. This house is clearly flattened. Its nextdoor neighbors to either side are redtagged and three doors down jody hasnt had any peace since it happened. My stomach has been in knots since then. And i tried to go out and do things and forget it yesterday but i cant. Reporter the house continued to move through the evening yesterday making sure it stayed fresh in peoples minds. In fact, today jody stayed home keeping watch afraid to leave her home and dogs in case her side of the same hill came down. I just think what if something happens . I can see it from here. Reporter she has been planting the hill hoping it would hold. Neighbors had an expert inspect the lot but they said its safe. No public works today. Its too unstable making neighbors like jody wonder what else tomorrows storm will bring. I keep looking and im just so worried and i feel so bad for them. I just so sorry. Reporter the homeowners are staying with a Family Member and i talked to that Family Member who told me they have filed an Insurance Claim and they have a number but they have to wait until the end of the week for the company to get back to them. In san rafael, emily turner, kpix 5. Theres potholes and then theres this huge thing thats been tying up traffic in the east bay all day. And relief wont come for several more hours. The pothole opened up on a bridge along interstate 580 east of greenville road in livermore. Two westbound lanes are closed and they will not reopen until 10 p. M. Tonight. Anne makovec shows us what makes the repairs so challenging. Reporter its four by ten feet long and exposes the rebar underneath westbound 580. That was enough to shut down the two right lanes over greenville road for the entire morning commute. More than a dozen drivers got flat tires by hitting this hole at full speed. Caltrans took all morning to make a plan to fill this hole temporarily. More permanent repairs need warm dry weather. Reporter in the meantime the traffic was crawling between tracy and livermore. It too this truck driver 2. 5 hours and he says 580 has been needing repairs for years. They will mess around and break a spring leaf on this and it happened before. So for them not to fix it and we pay all these taxes is kind of horrible. Reporter caltrans says there are plans to repave the whole road later this year. I know that the paving out there is in really ragged shape but there are other places that needed even more attention first. Reporter in livermore, anne makevoc, kpix 5. You didnt have to go far to find storm damage this morning. Its all over. But yeah, i shot this video this morning. Its a huge eucalyptus tree that came down overnight across diablo road in danville. It took down six power polls. Crews are still clearing the debris. Amazing pictures from the Santa Cruz Mountains. A van plunged into the gaping hole last night. A huge part of the skyland road washed way in the rain. The driver was not hurt. A tree is blocking access to the crash site. Highway 17 still a mess after this epic mudslide at the summit. This is the third one in a few weeks. Maria medina got close to that mess. Reporter chp allowed us to get just a few feet away from this monster mudslide and you can see why it shut down the northbound lanes. They say the cleanup is likely to continue until tomorrow afternoon. This is the biggest mudslide i have been involved in and have seen on this highway. The slide even flipped an stuff. That driver is okay. The northbound lanes of highway 17 could be shut down for three days. Getting word of School Closings ahead of tomorrows storm. Yeah. Theres another one coming. Paul is going to be along to talk about it. The following districts are shutting down larkspur corte madera, ross valley and the Mill Valley School district. They are all closing tomorrow as is the Tamalpais High School district. A wet and gray day in the sierra today. This is a look along i80 in kingvale. They have been seeing mostly rain but this next storm system expected to bring more snow. Chief meteorologist paul deanno has been checking timing on the rain, the wind headed our way. The water has risen and will stay above flood stage until friday along the Russian River in guerneville a secondary crest coming friday afternoon because of the rain we are going to get tomorrow. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the north bay, the coast and Santa Cruz Mountains for this next storm tomorrow. And theres a new winter storm warning for snowfall up to 36 inches of new snowfall in the highest peaks of the sierra. So when does all of this begin . I can give you a specific hour. Its going to be coming in from the north and its going to start pouring in Sonoma County around 7 00 tomorrow morning working south. One more storm to go. Well talk about how much rain and what happens after the storm is finally gone. Thats coming up. New at 5 00 a chase ends with a collision between a getaway car and police van in San Francisco. This all started after a womans purse was stolen at pier 33. Officers gave chase along the embarcadero. The suspects, though, did not get very far trying to take a turn, they ran straight into that police van. Four people were arrested. Meanwhile, President Trump calling out the judges in San Francisco who are Still Deciding whether to put his travel ban back in place. He said in a tweet a little while ago that theres a big difference im sorry, theres been a big increase in traffic since the ban was suspended and he says americans are far more vulnerable now. The president told a gathering of Police Officials in washington, dc that the courts are being too political. He says the travel ban doesnt target muslims even though the ban applies to seven majority muslim countries. He says its all about american safety. I watched last night in amazement and i heard things that i couldnt believe. Courts seem to be so political. And it would be so great for our Justice System if they would be able to read a statement and do whats right. Now, a ruling here in San Francisco on whether the travel ban will be reinstated could come down as early as tomorrow morning. And when it does, it is sure to immediately head to the u. S. Supreme court. Melissa caen, kpix 5. The city of santa rosa is trying to protect its residents from, um, the Trump Administration policies by calling itself an indivisible city. The mayor says its not declaring itself a sanctuary city exactly but will still adopt many of the same rules. Sanctuary is a red flag for the Trump Administration. The, um, the administration has said that sanctuary cities will be punished financially. And in santa rosa the people who are recipients of federal dollars are the most vulnerable members of our community. The mayor says the city values every resident equally no matter what their background or status and that the declaration helps promise that police will not enforce any federal immigration laws no matter a persons status. Within the past hour, President Trumps pick for attorney general was confirmed. The vote just happened on the senate floor. Reporter despite the democrats attempt to derail this confirmation with 24 hours of debate, we expected Jeff Sessions to become the attorney general and he did. The vote was almost unanimously down party lines a divide that was highlighted by some drama when the Senate Leaders silenced a democratic critic which only gave her a louder voice. The nomination is confirmed. Reporter the senate has confirmed senator Jeff Sessions as the next attorney general of the united states. He will do an outstanding job, i believe, in restoring the reputation of the department of justice. Reporter sessions confirmation comes over the objections of his democratic colleagues. Reporter republicans silenced massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren on the senate floor tuesday night, which overshadowed the vote. I tried to read a letter from Coretta Scott king and Mitch Mcconnell came to the floor and shut me down. Reporter Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell says reading the 1986 king letter opposing sessions nomination to be a federal judge was damaging the reputation of her fellow colleague, a violation of a senate rule.
