27yearold barry white was convicted of two counts of firstdegree murder and 7 counts of attempted murder. The violence happened in july of 2013 inside the San Francisco gift center and jewelrymart on brannon street south of market. It followed a dispute over a gold chain. White demanded a partial refund because of a discrepancy of how much it weighed and then he killed two female clerks and shot and wounded the stores owner. A short time ago the attorney who defended white says he is concerned about his clients mental health. This is a young man that was shot at the age of 19 with issues ever since then, and even before then. So he is going through a lot right now. And so were going to have him evaluated by jail psychiatric services. The public defender argued in court that white had an untreated mental disorder linked to injuries from a confrontation with Antioch Police in 2009. White was awaiting trial for that incident when he committed the Jewelry Store murders. In 2013, white fired shots at San Francisco police before he eventually surrendered. Later, investigators found a loaded ak47 in his car. A group of teens attack a man in oakland after he tries to take back an iphone that one of them stole from a bart rider. Now, aside from the smaller robberies, this is the second time in three months a large group of teens robbed and beat up some bart passengers. It happened friday evening as people were going home as a train stopped at the coliseum bart station. Authorities say a teen robbed a woman of her iphone 7. They say as the kid and his friends, about 13 of them, walked out of the train, this Good Samaritan lenard brown demanded they return the phone. They jumped him. But somehow, the offduty Security Guard fought the kids off and got the phone back for the woman. This is crazy to think this is just a really common thing to be happening at this station. Reporter Charles Ennis was not involved in fridays robbery, but he tackled another robber on june 18 at the same bart station. He says a teen, about 16 years old, snatched a womans smartphone on the platform. He chased the person down. He drove him to the sideline and, you know, grabbed him against the wall and held him, asked him to bring out the phone. He complied. I gave it to the old lady and then he ran. Reporter he received a cut to his forehead. I recommend more people do what i did so i dont have to do it alone. You know . I you know, having to do this stuff alone is what makes it so dangerous. Reporter there have been some brazen robberies at the coliseum station. On april 22, bart says 40 to 60 kids stopped a train and robbed the passengers of their phones and wallets. In fridays robbery, bart Police Arrested the 13 kids involved. But because witnesses could not identify which kid took the phone, officers took their photos and released them to their parents as they continued the investigation. Bart is downplaying this latest robbery. In fact, they didnt even send out an alert to passengers. They say no need to make a big deal out of this because theres no public threat. Now, they declined an interview to talk about this robbery today, and they also called this an attempted robbery because that Good Samaritan fought and got that phone back. Live in oakland, im da lin, kpix 5. Now, despite the wettest winter we have seen in years, one coastal town is actually in danger of running out of water. Located in Santa Cruz County, the town of davenport is blaming the runout on bad pipes at the old cemex plant. But the company told our kpix 5s len ramirez, dont blame us. Reporter the town of davenport sits on a hill overlooking the ocean halfway surrounded by water. But soon in this town of 400, there may not be a drop to drink. We had a huge downfall of rain this last winter, and no one would ever suspect that we would be running dry at this time. Reporter its true. The problem goes back to the history of the town and its ties to the cemex cement plant, which closed in 2010. City water runs through pipes on the cemex property but last winters storms damaged pipe and the town switched to a backup supply from a nearby creek which runs dry in summer. Now according to one county supervisor, davenport has less than a month of water supply left, and the county may have to seek legal action. They always kept the water supply flowing to both their plant and this community, and now that theyve left, they decided to essentially abandon the community. Reporter cemex sent us a response saying the damaged pipes are not on cemex property and blamed the county. Cemex did discuss the issues caused by the storm damage with county staff and sent a letter to Santa Cruz County leaders in may offering them access so the county could make the repairs the county deemed necessary. The attempt to cast this as cemex cutting off Water Supplies is disappointing. Davenport residents already higher water bills but one Business Owner worries what happens if the town runs dry . If its going to close down a business which provides money for the county and jobs for people, its not a good thing. Reporter the sanitation district, which is also on cemex property, plans to make the needed repairs, but emergency plans are being made to truck water in if needed. In davenport, len ramirez, kpix 5. The county responded this afternoon that although cemex no longer owns the property, it does own the pipe. The Water District will pay for the emergency repairs, but if cemex doesnt pay, each household in the low Income Community could be on the hook for 2,000. San jose families who lost everything when coyote creek flooded last winter are trying to get their recovery costs paid by filing claims. The flooding forced 14,000 people out of homes and into temporary housing. Well, victims are blaming the city and Santa Clara Valley Water District and the county of santa clara. Many are upset with how officials handled the evacuations. In fact, some say nearby animals were moved out of danger before their families were even given notice. Were on the first floor, so we did lose everything. We had no warning. And it was a little disconcerting it find out that the animals had been in the park had been moved and we werent given, you know, the decency of a warning. Since march, city leaders have been discussing a plan to extend floodwalls and levees upstream to prevent this kind of flooding in the future. The governor says the summit in september of 2018 will include entrepreneurs, professors and musicians. And in another move on climate change, frances government plans to ban sales of gas and diesel powered cars. The ecology minister said the target date for the complete ban is the year 2040. And he said its not just about climate but also about reducing pollution to protect public health. That announcement came a day after volvo said that beginning with the 2019 model year, it will only offer cars that are hybrids or fully electric. The Mountain Lion has been spotted several times in the last week prompting a twoday closure of the south rim trail and oneway road. Frequent sightings in the same area are what makes it more unusual and uncommon. If he has food he will feed on it for a few days and move on. Caltrain proposes fare and parking hikes to close a multi Million Dollar budget deficit. Now commuters are weighing in. Kpix 5s Katie Nielsen looks at the plan on the table. Reporter 60,000 people each weekday hop on caltrain and soon that trip might cost more, frustrating some commuters. I never imagined i would be in this position where i would be dependent on caltrain and i feel like a hostage. Reporter they increase the zone fare by 25 cents, eliminating the eightride ticket and increasing monthly parking from 55 to 82. 50 is the proposal. They would also raise the employersponsored go pass rates from 190 a month to 285. Its going to help improve the service, then i would be all for it. Reporter while other commuters say paying more might not be worth it. Think i would look elsewhere. But the options are limited in terms of getting to the city. Reporter today caltrain held a public hearing at its headquarters in san carlos to discuss all the proposed changes. Two things about caltrain riders. They already pay their fair share of the fare. Reporter caltrain staff will make their final recommendation regarding the fare hikes to the board in august; and if those do go into effect, it wont be until october. Katie nielsen, kpix 5. They are considering reducing nighttime and weekend fares. More employees are working remotely creating a growing need for affordable temporary places to work. Consumerwatch reporter julie watts with the trend of restaurants turning into shared Office Spaces. Reporter she is closing up her laptop for the day just steps from happy hour at the bar. She is one of a growing number of people who dont use a traditional office. In fact, she says she has never had one. Havent. And i dont have near term plans to get one. Reporter Global Workplace analytics estimates as many as 40 of americans telecommute at least once a month and while shortterm rental coworking offices arent new, the trend of restaurants as Office Spaces is increasing. Theres a huge demand for quiet, productive affordable space. Reporter Companies Like kettle space rent out new york restaurants sharing Office Spaces by day and opening for dinner at night. The company eat work play is taking it further and bringing it to the bay area. It was out of a genuine need for space to work out of for a solution that wasnt as expensive coworking spaces. Reporter they reserve sections of restaurant that are open during the day providing full service along with adequate power, wifi, functionality an unlimited coffee. For ten bucks a day or 150 a month they stay competitive with coworking spaces and offer members an alternative to coffee shops and hotel lobbies. You may not have a breakfast or lunch crowd. You want to bring in guests to fill the space. They go up to the fireline then realize not safe, try to go the other way. They actually found a break and now theyre kind of in that burnedout spot of this brush fire.
