And on a day like today, Richard Westwood is working nonstop. He owns a heating and air repair. Today his staff is fully booked trying to get airconditioners fixed. They should start the air conditioner in the morning, let it maintain its temperature, that way it doesnt work so hard when you get home. And on a serious note for those who dont have ac and especially for senior citizens, there are cooling centers in the east bay specifically in pleasanton and dublin. The heat not helping this. Two fires have merged in the past hour in tuolumne county. About 100 acres went up so far. Evacuations are ordered for two area campsites and a few residents, as well. Terrifying moments for passengers on a British Airways plane when the plane caught fire in las vegas. Look closely. You can see flames shooting out of the left engine. Thick black smoke rising into the sky. Passengers had to escape down the emergency chute. The boeing 777 was getting ready for takeoff to london. This view the smoke was taken by a passenger in another plane. There were 159 passengers and 13 crew on board. Everyone got off the plane safely, and officials at las vegass mccar airport say two people were taken mccarren airport say two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Three Santa Clara County jail deputies were in court today on homicide charges. Jereh lubin, Rafael Rodriguez and Matthew Farris all accused of beating an inmate to death last month. The inmate, michael tyree, was found naked and unconscious in his cell august 2. August 27. Prosecutors say the guards punched and kicked him and left him to die. Whether the person lives on the street or is in that jail, that person deserves human dignity. Deputies also charged with assaulting a second inmate the night that tyree died. If the convicted they will face a possible life sentence on the homicide charge and a year in county jail for the assault. They will be back in Court Next Week for a bail hearing. Theres an ambitious proposal to send San Franciscos central subway to ocean beach and even fishermans wharf. This is a look at the central subway and some of the stations. Currently its going to chinatown. Supervisor scott weiner proposes to take it farther and says it should go to north beach and beyond. Besides providing service to places that dont have it he says theres another reason for the extension. We have a lot of congestion. We need to move transit more quickly and increase its capacity. And the way to do that is to have a more extensive below ground subway system. We need to move more of our transit off the streets of low grounds. Weiner didnt put a dollar figure on the proposal. Police say that one man was hit in the upper body. The other in the foot. Neighbors think the shooting was gangrelated. Reporter when a chicken wandered into the bay bridge toll plaza fouling up the morning commute for four hours. The chicken escaped from the car of a former oakland mayoral candidate named ken houston. The chp was finally able to nab the bird brained perpetrator which they named chip even though its a hen and she has been in custody ever since at the oakland Animal Shelter. She has made National News and everybody here loves her and i mean this is an experience of a lifetime. Reporter chip will be doing Community Service teaching kids Life Sciences at this schoolyard garden in east oakland. It is quite exciting. Im going to make sure i have a picture outside. For that reason we are hot from the coast all the way inland the entire bay area couple more minutes of the heat advisory tonight and then again tomorrow from 11 a. M. To 7 p. M. Why not all night . We cool down to the 60s and 50s. San rafael you were close to 100 today going down to 58 degrees. Dry air unlike texas and florida we can cool off at night after a hot day. They cant. We can. The ridge there it is thats the reason why it was hot today. Im here to tell ya, it aint moving. Three more days where the ridge is just off to the north and west. Winds go clockwise around it so our wind is coming from the north and northeast. Its pushing the marine influence away from us not allowing it to come to us so if anything hotter tomorrow by a few degrees. When does the ridge move . It will on saturday. Also tonight we have a series of emails that the city of san jose fought to keep secret. It has to do with the assistant police chief. New at 6 00, kpix 5s devin fehely got some copies of those emails and called the assistant chief, who said, yeah, lets talk. Reporter the city initially fought the release of the emails arguing that they were purely personal in nature even though they were sent from assistant police chief eddie garcias official email account. For personal, um, questions, if they are not law enforcementrelated, personal emails that ill be using a personal email address. Reporter while the majority of the newly released emails deal with conversations about his childrens sports teams, a message from april of 2014 contained this eyebrowraising exchange in which a friend writes that et good end a little reprieve from the boss that he had gotten a little reprieve from the boss after garcia took care of the ticket. The chief says theres an explanation. Somebody that i knew needed a Police Officer to sign a fix it ticket for them. Reporter in fact, garcias initial email refers to a, quote, fix it ticket as well as the friends boss at home aka his wife. So this individuals brought me proof of correction for a registration for his wifes car and once that proof of correction was given to me and i saw it, i signed off the ticket. Reporter the latest batch of emails comes on the heels of the release of hundreds of workrelated emails earlier this year which revealed mounting frustration and in fighting between the Police Department and city hall. Those earlier emails garcia says were an embarrassment especially after it was announced that he will become the interim chief next year.
