He is running for reelection amid an ethics investigation, an investigation that devin fehely has discovered is costing the congressman in more ways than one. Reporter while his challenger has been raking in endorsements and cash, congressman mike honda has been racking up legal bills a drain on a campaign that has struggles at times to raise money. Honda right now is really having to devote a lot of time and energy to, um, the ongoing ethics investigation and answering questions about, um, what he knew and when he knew it. Reporter the office of congressional ethics found there was, quote, substantial reason to believe honda misused official resources including staff time to the benefit of his campaign. In our analysis of his campaigns financial records reveals in the 2nd quarter of this year, the congressman spent more than 65,000 on lawyers, nearly a third of all the money his campaign spent. The other issue is its not clear how open the Honda Campaign has been with donors about what their money is going for. Reporter a Spokesman Says its legal for the congressman to use Campaign Contributions for his Legal Defense. In a prepared statement, the Honda Campaign says we believe that this complaint is inherently political raised by representative hondas political opponent in a cheap effort to get votes. But challenger ro khanna is winning the battle for money. According to federal reports, he has more than a Million Dollars on hand compared to 360,000 for honda as the veteran congressman faces an increasingly uphill battle for reelection. They are trying to maximize their profits. Reporter the 1950s ranch home is gone the half acre lot for new construction. But when neighbors learned that the lots natural rock formation and oak tree would be cleared to make room for four new homes, they got in the way literally. We parked our cars all alongside the street here in front of the rock hillside of the oak tree to make it difficult for the big trucks to get in and out. Reporter it maybe the most extreme example of neighbors fighting one of Silicon Valleys latest Housing Trends called lot splitting. People are taking Larger Properties and trying to divide them or subdividing them into two or three parcels and constructing additional homes to help meet the needs of people that are looking for a place to live. Reporter the realtor is a partner in a project to split the lot in the back of this historic home near downtown santa clara. Its a big deal financially for the seller. Reporter its happening all over the valley in neighborhoods built when land was plentiful and cheap. Kpix 5s john ramos shows us the project called bishops vineyards. Reporter the operators of holy sepulcher Catholic Cemetery in hayward had a problem. They wanted it to look nice. But planting lawn on all the open land was too expensive. An acre of grass is about 50,000 to irrigate it. Reporter so the man in charge of the diocese cemeteries got the idea to plant grapevines instead. They would give the property a polished look and the grapes they produce could make free altar wine for area churches. When you drink wine at church, you just take a little sip. So reporter you dont sniff the bouquet. Youre not doing that. [ laughter ] reporter but when the head winemaker at rock wall winery in alameda got a load of the grapes coming in, she realized they had a higher calling. At first we were making it all into a rose and i tasted the chardonnay and no, you have to put it in barrels. We have to make real chardonnay out of this. Reporter it turns out the grapes are excellent, you might even say divine. So the Catholic Diocese of oakland is now in the wine business selling four different varieties under the bishops vineyard label. And they say they havent received any complaints from the families of the dearly departed. In fact, they say the plots nearest the vineyard are in highest demand. Its sort of a way to be with them for, like, a more eternal piece of time. I dont know, its a very catholic concept i suppose. [ laughter ] reporter the folks at the cemetery put it more simply. If we were growing tomatoes, we wouldnt have the same excitement. [ laughter ] reporter its the mystery of life coupled with the mystique of wine. Whether thats a miracle is a matter of faith.
