Within the last hour we learned new information about the man that police say shot a bart Police Officer in the arm today in hayward. Devin fehely found a witness who helped the injure officer. Devin is at the hayward bart station. Devin. Reporter thats right. Now, bart police say that this situation escalated quickly. They were trying to question the suspect when they say he pulled out a weapon. Bart police say they spotted the suspect inside the parking garage near a uhaul truck that had a busted window. An officer asked him to put his arms on his head. He reached into his waistband and produced a weapon. Reporter that triggered a shootout between the suspect 27 yearold charles getting and two bart Police Officers. One suspect he has been shot. Thats all the cops shooting his last bullets and thats all i saw. Reporter he saw the conclusion of the gun battle as one of the officers bloodied from a wound to the arm struggled to take the injured squirming suspect into custody. Ran to the suspect put his knee on his head and then like this other officer was like trying to like handcuff him but like couldnt because like it was like too much pain like. Transporting officer to the hospital. Reporter police say the suspect and injured officer are expected to every ro. Investigators say the suspect has had several runins with the law. The gun was stolen and the vehicle was stolen. Reporter inside the suspects backpack they say they found even more suspicious items. Inside the backpack, bb gun, ski masks, burglary tools. As you heard police say the gun they found on the suspect that they recovered here on the scene was stolen. New tonight, we learn a man was stabbed to death in san jose. It happened this morning on north 26th street near bulldog boulevard. Police dont know the motive but the killer is on the loose. New at 6 00, are you having problems with your mail . Tonight the post office admits that many people around the bay area are getting their mail late. And some letters are showing up at the wrong house. Really bad though in concord and in walnut creek and thats where da lin is tonight. It was the first time in my life the postman didnt deliver was week and she admitted it. She said it was too long a day. She couldnt finish. It was just shocking. Its really changed. Reporter a Postal Service spokesman blames retirement and facility closure. He says in this region alone, they need to hire 200 people to cover 150 vacant routes. Delivery delays have been an ongoing problem this year across the bay area. Its especially bad now because usps expects to handle 15 more packages this Holiday Season than it did last year. Looks like 8 00 sometimes at night that they are delivering the mail and so whats challenging is if you dont get your mail right away we have people going around to the mailbox and they are stealing mail. Reporter customers noticed carriers are working longer hours causing them to be careless with packages. Because they are so busy, they are throwing them on the doorsteps. Reporter a congressman wrote a letter to the postmaster general. Mark desaulnier said due to the volume and concentration of these problems, i respectfully request your assistance in ensuring that the service area the usps improves reliable mail delivery in my district. The post office is working to hire more carriers. Not all the kids got their gifts in time. It didnt come in the mail so the adults got to hang their ornaments but not the children. Around 2 30 this morning, a toyota going south in the northbound lanes slammed into a car which was an uber. The toyota then burst into flames. The wrongway driver and the uber passenger died. The uber driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. A lot of wrong way drivers turns out that they may have been intoxicated. Its a possibility. I dont know for sure if thats the case in this particular situation. But its definitely a possibility. Northbound highway 1 was closed for four hours this morning. That was terrible. A water main break soaked a street and more in San Francisco today. It happened just before noon on green street and buchanan and sent water into homes. It also affected muni service. Well, tonight as you think about what to do with your christmas leftovers, the city of palo alto is thinking about forcing everyone to compost those food scraps instead of throwing them away. You know, virtually any food thing anything thats biodegreatable. Reporter this bucket provided by the city of palo alto, before dumping it in their green compost bin outside. Anything thats biodegradable. I like the concept of recycling and, um, being ecological. Reporter but now city leaders are closer to making everyone compost from residents, workers, even visitors. Its mostly food scraps. Reporter and eventually all businesses. Overall, its better for the environment. So its a winwin for everybody. Reporter rob has recycled food scraps for 5 years at palo alto creamery downtown. According to the city he is just one of the few. Only 30 of businesses in palo alto compost. Its just easy. Its something people have to get used to and start doing. Reporter he agrees all businesses should be forced to compost. The city reports 70 of garbage in the city could be recycled instead of thrown away. Yes, it should be a law. Reporter but many question how the law would be enforced. There wont be any enforcement like so many other laws that we have. Reporter city workers say they visit customers to see they are fouling the law. Back out here in the front yard, the neighbors are helping this family clean up. This family has only been living in this house for three weeks and already, these neighbors are like family. Im showing you these because each of these temperatures will likely be eclipsed by whats going to happen the next couple nights.
