KPIX KPIX 5 News At 600PM February 19, 2016

That, either. Last night we told but weird noises and secret doings in these sunnyvale buildings. 3 a. M. They have deliveries. Its secretive. Its very dark. Almost every night noise wakes up the dogs. Reporter a blog several years ago gave a clue saying apple had been granted a permit for an auto Testing Center leading to speculation a driverless car from the computer giant might be being built there. Whats going on in that factory that everybody is secret about . You have to ask apple that. Reporter outside of that mention in the blog, the city admits it has no idea what in fact is going on here. [ noise ] reporter hello . Apple didnt return phone calls nor answer the door at one of the several buildings on this block on san gabriel road, where the noise is coming from and keeping neighbors up at night. Theyre like sheets of metal slamming. Youll hear like planking. Youll hear almost a grinding sound. [ noise ] this was always such a nice quiet neighborhood. And now its more of an industrial area. Its very frustrating. Reporter the city admits, it didnt know that, either, until our story last night. We saw your coverage about that story and looked into city complaints and we actually couldnt find anything. Reporter she is asking neighbors to let the city know so they can send inspectors and Police Officers out even in the middle of the night. But as for if apple is building its long rumored but never confirmed driverless car . The city of sunnyvale is in the dark as well as everybody else. Apple has this permit for auto testing. That doesnt mean they are building a driverless car. They do a lot of things with cars, audio, gps, that kind of thing. We dont know whats going on in the buildings. Those gates dont help us find that out, allen. Mike, as youre knocking on doors talking to people today, what was the neighborhood like there while were you there today . Reporter it was quiet. There did seem to be a change because we were all up and down the street where those buildings are and nobody came out to stop us. I think they found out that, um, with those security guards, its bad pr. So they stopped doing that. Apparently. All right, Mike Sugerman in sunnyvale, thank you. A big win for the bay area and it comes at l. A. s expense. We have learned the first leg of the bullet train will be the 250mile stretch between san jose and bakersfield. Thats instead of running trains first to los angeles. New at 6 00, kpix 5s devin fehely on the major benefits the project will bring to sillicon valley. Reporter yeah, getting that first leg of the highspeed rail system is an enormous coup for Northern California. Imagine making sillicon valley money but enjoying a quieter and significantly cheaper quality of life in the Central Valley. The highspeed rail project could transform the bay areas Transportation System linking sillicon valleys high paying jobs with the Central Valleys relatively low cost of living all with the promise of a quick convenient commute. The highspeed Rail Authority had a tough choice to make. Two great regions of l. A. And san jose, but needing to start with one and this was more costeffective and more timeefficient. Reporter although it wont be officially announced until tomorrow, Northern California has managed to leapfrog ahead of los angeles, in line now for the first leg of the 64 billion highspeed rail system from bakersfield to san jose. The Economic Impact of the rail line would be enormous, court sam liccardo. Were ready in the region. Reporter the congestion and gridlock worse by the day. Commuters want more transportation options. I ride the train every day. I think a train is good. Whether or not people want to go to the Central Valley or not is another question but reporter heres why they might. According to the National Association of realtors, the median price for a house in san jose topped 900,000 last year. Compare that to roughly 200,000 in bakersfield where the line would begin. I know its expensive but, you know, cars arent sustainable so i think rail offers a good alternative. Reporter highspeed rail is on track to reach the bay area in a decade potentially changing where we live, where we work and how we get there. So highspeed rail travels in excess of 200 Miles Per Hour and as advertised and could make the first leg of the jury in under an hour. Devin fehely, kpix 5. Another benefit to starting the train here instead of los angeles, it brings the cost of the project down to 64 billion from 68 billion. Crews are tearing down an Apartment Building in pacifica thats been on the edge of the cliff. The twostory building used to be at 330 esplanade avenue. Now its a pile of rubble. Redtagged, it has been sitting empty and condemned until today. This is what it looked like just last month. Now its just a pile of splinters. The work crews say they should be done by the end of the night. City Officials Say the owner paid for the demolition. That wont be the case for 320 esplanade next door which was also redtagged in 2009. The owner of that complex is bankrupt so the city is having to make plans for its demolition. A date hasnt been set. And then last month, yet a third building 310 esplanade was yellowtagged after el nino storms took more chunks out of the cliff underneath. Residents have been allowed to retrieve their things but cant stay overnight. The city hasnt decided whether it will stay or also be torn down. Yay oh happy [ laughter ] reporter its party time for the folks across the street. Now you have a view. Are they going to raise your rent . God, i hope not. I hope my landlord isnt watching this, either. [ laughter ] reporter hope not. We wont tell him. All right. Were back live now in pacifica, where the demolition continues. I will tell you all the landlords know because its only three buildings now but the erosion continues with more storms to come. Reporting live in pacifica, joe vazquez, kpix 5. The bay areas latest storm left behind quite the mess. Strong winds took down trees around the bay area. [ chainsaw noise ] in the Oakland Hills crews used chainsaws to cut up and remove this large tree. It came down before 6 a. M. Hitting the top of a work van and that wasnt the only damage. Meantime, antivirus developer john mcafee is offering to hack the shooters phone for free. Mcafee says he is disturbed by the governments request and wants to help. It limits the number of times the password can be entered before the phone is wiped clean. He could use social engineering techniques. Today the fbi searched the Southern California home of the brother of the San Bernardino shooter. Its crazy to think i have two kids so its kind of crazy to think they are, like, right next door, you know, you would never expect it out of your neighbors. Reporter the fbi stormed a quiet corona neighborhood and woke up many families when agents pried open the front door of syed farooks brothers townhome. Homeland security took out boxes of papers and computer and all anything that had any information on it. Reporter stacey says this is the fourth raid at his neighbors home following the december 2 shooting. He wonders if the fbi search is connected to effort to unlock the iphone that apple wont help hack. Im sure they are trying to find that code. If he knows it, i wish he would let them know so that everybody would be happy and feel safer. Reporter another neighbor posted a photo online of what appears to be a farook Family Member in the black and white jacket on the driveway. The raid has drawn outsiders to the neighborhood like debbie, who lives a mile away, but wanted to check out the scene. I think my main concern is im really sad for the people who lost their lives. I just hope that they can, um, you know, get to the bottom of what happened and make sure theres no one else involved in this area.
