A new hurdle for donald trump in the race for the white house. Fellow republican and House Speaker paul ryan says he cannot support trump right now oo. Im not ready to do that at this point. Im not there yet. I hope to, though. I want to. But i think what is required is that we unify this party. And i think the bulk of the burden on unifying the party will have to come from our presumptive nominee. Ryan joins other republicans who are turning their backs on trump. Arizona senator john mccain says he is worried that trump will hurt his chances of re election. Mccain, mitt romney, former president s george w. Bush and george h. W. Bush say they will not attend the Republican National convention. California republicans are also worried about their election chances with trump on the ballot. Kpix 5s political analyst melissa caen on how trump puts some of them in a rather tough spot right now. Reporter well, exactly. We talk so much about the president ial race and that on californias june 7th primary but there are other candidates on the ballot running for offices Like Assembly or state senate. Those local races are what we call down the ballot races. And those down the ballot candidates now have to deal with having donald trump at the top of the ticket. Whoo reporter if anyone knows the risk of being associated with donald trump, its clint olivier. He is a republican in fresno. And when he ran for an Assembly Seat last month in a special election, democrats ran a Spanish Language ad that said, republican Clinton Olivier belongs to the same party that wants to build a wall between us and mexico. A wall that will divide families. Republican assemblyman rossi chavez says that connection to trump was fatal. The latinos should have been voting for the republicans. But thats all they had to say was trump, republican, and our candidate, and he lost. Reporter and get used to that, says Democratic Campaign strategist nate ballard. So if you can tie your republican opponent to donald trump, which is very easy to do because they belong to the same political party, you have won your election. Reporter so whats a republican to do . Here in the bay area, moderate republican kathy baker is up for reelection in dublin and fellow moderate Deborah Allen is running for assembly in contra costa. So what does she think about having trump on the same ballot . I am my own person. I am not affiliated with trump in terms of the things that he said. Um, i i believe the voters are smart enough to see the difference. Reporter whether voters do see the difference, chavez says dont look for trump to care. Trump does things for trump regardless of what its going to do for the down ticket races. Reporter in some parts of california, the turnout of Trump Supporters might actually be a good thing for republicans. Here in the bay area, as we have seen, trump could cause a different result. So they dont just come out and say im not going to support him. They distance themselves . Im my own candidate. The thing is if you say i hate donald trump i dont want to be associated then you lose his supporters. So you have to walk a fine line. It is a fine line. Thank you, melissa. Well, Hillary Clinton certainly not losing sight of california. She was in l. A. Today paying a visit to the california africanamerican museum.
