A Santa Clara County judge stunned a lot of people today when he sentenced a former stanford student to six months in jail for sexual assaulting a woman after a campus party. New at 6 00 kpix 5s devin fehely was in that courtroom. A lot of people talking about this tonight. Reporter yes, they are. The courtroom was visited by the victims impact statement say. Some in the audience cried. This woman talked about the unending trauma about being a rape victim, hurt, shame, anger and she feels, an anger that wasnt lessened by what the judge decided. The punishment does not fit the crime. This predatory offender failed to take responsibility, failed to show remorse, and failed to tell the truth. Reporter prosecutors along with the victim and her supporters were disappointed and baffled by the judges decision to sentence former stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail and probation for sexual assaulting a woman who was unconscious, drunk, at a campus party last year. Ultimately the fact that this defendant preyed upon an intoxicated stranger on a College Campus should not be viewed less serious than if he assaulted an intoxicated stranger in downtown palo alto. Reporter turner could have had got 14 years in state prison. Prosecutors recommended six. In a powerful and moving victim impact statement, the young woman turner assaulted told the court today that she should not be viewed as a drunk victim discarded behind a dumpster, nor should the scales of justice be tipped in favor of the all american swimmer. A light sentence she said would make a mockery of the seriousness of his assault. Even turners defense attorney acknowledged that many people wouldnt be happy with the judges decision. If my daughter was a victim of this i would be livid. I would be furious. Id be asking for, you know, a very serious punishment. Reporter turner will have to register as a sex offender. He had never been convicted of a serious crime before and the judge also took into account his age. Im not saying the judge did anything wrong. But i can understand why people could look at this and say, hey, that sentence doesnt fit the crime. Reporter brock turner was taken into custody right inside the courtroom. Now, before he was taken into custody and sentenced, he did address the court and the victim directly. He said that he was sorry for the suffering that he had caused that night. But it just was not the full throated apology or admission of guilt that prosecutors or more importantly the victim said they had been waiting to hear. In palo alto, devin fehely, kpix 5.
