There was a standoff for about 4 hours in the Street Market and jones in a very busy area civic center. The police negotiated with the man, who had a gun who as you heard the chief say he wanted to be hurt by police. His family members have described him as someone with mental illness. They spent several hours talking to him. They used flashbang grenade and other nonlethal weapons. In the end the man was taken into custody not harmed. They put him on an ambulance and took him away a few minutes ago. The situation resolved here peacefully. In the meantime flames in a mansion in San Franciscos seacliff neighborhood today after a car crashed into the side of it. The driver died. It happened on 32nd avenue around 1 30 this afternoon. You could see the bright orange flames inside through the front window. Outside firefighters hosed down the engulfedover turned car. Firefighters kicked their way through the front door. They were able to knock out the fire quickly as neighbors watched from the sidewalk in disbelief. No word yet on what led up to this although it appears a pickup truck might have been hit before that crash. Police did manage to pull a shaggy haired dog to safety. No reports of any injuries. Police uncovered millions of dollars worth of Marijuana Plants during a drug sweep in san jose. Police raided 7 marijuana grow houses this morning. Two people arrested. They say the operation was controlled from a house on winstead court. Officers found nearly 2,000 plants worth about 4 million dollar. We believe that this is a larger operation. But again, this is going to require a lot more followup investigation as to who the owners were of these properties. If there was anybody else involved with those suspects, as well. So again, a very, very significant arrest, a very, very significant seizure. Police say the growers hijacked power and water from neighbors and pg e. The homes of all had sophisticated systems for growing plants and security. A neighborhood in shock after an earlymorning inferno in the east bay. The fire broke out around 2 45 this morning at an Apartment Building under construction on san pablo avenue in emeryville. It is right near the border with oakland. The sixalarm fire spread to nearby townhomes and an Auto Repair Shop which as you can see from chopper 5 and on the ground now looks like a total war zone. More than a dozen cars reduced to a mess of metal. The Business Owner tells us it is a total loss. New at 6 00, kpix 5s cate caugiran shows us the latest tool being used to help in the firefight. Reporter well, veronica, this is something the Alameda CountySheriffs Office and Fire Department had trained for using drones to help fight fires and today was the first time the drones and training were put to use. With a fire this big, it can take more than just ground crews to put it out. So the Alameda CountyFire Department deployed its newest tool. We requested the drone to be able to fly above the fire and provide a thermal imaging update on where the hot spots were located. Reporter here are the images captured by one of the three drones used. The cameras have special heat sensors to let firefighters know the biggest problem areas. We were able to sense hot spots and able to verify that embers hadnt spread to other locations and also make sure that the firefighters were safe down on the scene. Reporter these images were live streamed to the fire command post for hours to help firefighters strategize where to deploy crews. This fire broke out just before 3 a. M. At a new apartment construction site. The flames spread to nearby homes in an Auto Repair Shop. I could see that so a total loss. If you decide you want to get out of jury duty you just say, oh, i dont like this judge and that really will could get you out and that shakes up the whole jury system in a very bad way. Reporter she says a judges job to decide someones future is not easy and while she may not agree on his controversial sentence, the answer is not to strip him of his duties or to refuse your civic duty as a juror. Police caught a suspect after a place chase in hayward and fremont today. At one point the suspect rammed parked cars before taking off on foot. Police set up a perimeter in the area and took the suspect into custody. An emeryville man is guilty of seconddegree murder in a crash that killed a marine.
