Students part of a national ad campaign. Kpix 5s Juliette Goodrich is at Dublin High School with the 30second spot thats driving home a tough message, juliette. Reporter it certainly is. Hi, ken. You know, madd, the national organization, asked these seven High School Students to put together this ad campaign. They did just that over the summer, spent hours and hours putting it together and when madd saw the finished product, they said it was mindblowing. Congratulations, class of 2020. Reporter these students from Dublin High Schools Video Production class spent their summer [ music ] reporter producing this 30second video from madds no more Victims Campaign. A few moments in almost anyones life and in the end, you kind of see that image being taken away from such a bad decision. Reporter they were under the guidance of dhs Video Production teacher michael dambrosia. They have said to me last year you guys probably saved lives. Reporter last year they produced an antidrunk driving event staged at the school. The madd organization was so impressed by the video, they asked the students to produce this video for their no more Victims Campaign that starts next month. Where are we statewide . Is the culture changing . Are the numbers going down in terms of duis . The numbers are not, unfortunately. They are increasing. Reporter Natasha Thomas Program Director with madd said in 2014 there were 867 dui reported deaths. In 2015 it increased to 889. These students hope it will send a message to anyone who gets behind the wheel and shouldnt down the road. Its going to send a strong message and its real. And it should hit hard and people should really watch it and take it seriously. Reporter so with all of this information out there, why are the number of fatalities increasing . Madd says it has to do with the economy. When the economy is up, the number of dui deaths goes up. The ad Campaign Begins in october. In dublin, Juliette Goodrich, kpix 5. A 3yearold child killed during a suspected drunk driving accident in san ramon will be buried tomorrow. The boy was killed earlier this month when his familys car broke down on interstate 680. A 39yearold driver suspected of dui slammed into their car severely injuring everyone inside. The boy, his two young siblings and their mom were rushed to the hospital where he later died. And a toy drive in the boys miamiry started today. New at 6 00 in the boys memory started today. Squabbling now the lawyers are involved and hanging in the balance two very expensive pieces of real estate and very prestigious projects. Santa clara isnt talking about its efforts to put the brakes on a megaoffice and Retail Development in san jose called santana west, which would add a million square feet of office space and retail to the century theaters property on winchester boulevard a letter from santa claras attorney does threaten a lawsuit over concerns suvs pollution, traffic and noise on santa clara streets, but it may be part of ongoing drama between san jose and santa clara. Im not going to, you know, go as far as to say its payback. Reporter the Council Member is talking about san joses recent lawsuit challenging a megadevelopment in santa clara. The city place project planned for the golf course property near levis stadium would bring up to 9 million square feet of Office Retail and housing. San joses suit contends the project does not include enough housing for its size and would strain north san jose. Im not too concerned about threatened lawsuits that we have threatened with lawsuits just about every day in this city. Reporter mayor sam liccardo downplayed the feud over the projects pointing instead to benefits such as job creation and plans that could transform the shuttered century 21 theater into the newest south Bay Entertainment destination. I couldnt speculate as to what motivations the city of santa clara might have for whatever they might do. We think its a great project for the whole region. Reporter jones says its time for the two south bay neighbors to mend fences. I think that level heads will get together in a room and figure out a compromise because there is room for compromise. I think it happens. Reporter now, tonight the San Jose City council will be voting on whether or not to adopt the Environmental Impact report of the santana west project. They are expected to do that, adopt it, but again, lawsuits or the threats of lawsuits now hanging up not one but two Major Projects here in the south bay. Kpix 5s devin fehely shows us how these rules could shape the future of car making. Reporter for years, Tech Companies and carmakers were in the drivers seat rolling out and testing selfdriving cars while state and federal regulators tried to catch up but not anymore. This framework contains more detailed than some might have expected but it also leaves room for more growth and changes in the future. Reporter starting today makers of selfdriving cars will need to provide federal regulators with detailed Safety Information about how the technology works, what happens if it fails, as well as what safeguards are in place to prevent the system from being hacked h. The Car Companies who are creating Autonomous Vehicles actually wanted the government to rule. Reporter this analyst says that federal guidelines will largely prevent carmakers from having to deal with a patchwork of state regulations and could pave the way for the technology to become commercially available in just a few years. The significance is that the federal government now steps in to say that we will write the fundamental rules on safety. Reporter google which has been on the forefront of this emerging industry was highly critical of californias rules buy required selfdriving cars to have a Steering Wheel and for a licensed driver to sit behind it. Notably the federal guidelines have no such requirements. More importantly, these rules and regulations still allow for a lot of innovation. In san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. The california dmv says it will review the federal guidelines and issue revised rules in the coming weeks. We now know that one pilot is dead, another injured, after a military spy plane crashed near sacramento. The u2 aircraft went down minutes after it took off from Beale Air Force base this morning. The military says the two pilots were participating in a Training Exercise at the time. Cbs reporter macy jenkins is at the Beale Air Force base with more. Reporter im standing just feet away from where a u2 air force plane went down this morning. Two pilots had just taken off from Beale Air Force base on a training mission. They ejected from the plane and crashed into the sutter butte. One pilot died and the other had injuries. The crash sparked a fire that spread across the side of the mountain. Right now theres a crew of air force investigators. They have handlers documenting the scene trying to figure out what happened. In sutter county, macy jenkins, kpix 5. Heres a picture of a u2 dragon lady similar to the one that crashed today. The u. S. Used them during the cold war especially to take pictures of military installations in the soviet union and other places. One famously shot down over the u ssr. It can fly higher than any u. S. Military aircraft. A pilot is shocked by the news of todays crash. It just is hard for me to fathom as to what was the cause to which they would have to eject. Todays crash is similar to another u2 crash that happened nearly 20 years ago. That pilot reported mechanical issues shortly after takeoff. Two people charged in the murders of a person in Golden Gate Park and hiker in marin faced a judge today. Emily turner shares some of the gruesome details from the preliminary hearing. Reporter she was in tears and he was ready to stare our cameras down. Morrison lampley and leila alligood are charged with murder and an accomplice to murder of 72yearold stephen carter. He was shot while hiking near fairfax in october of last year. The victim was shot and had blood all over him. And there was also a dog that was removed. Reporter we now know that alligood and lampley were dating at the time and detectives say she tried to pin the murder on their third friend and fellow drifter, sean angold to protect her boyfriend in the case of steve carter and the San Francisco murder case of a canadian backpacker killed in golden gate state park. Reporter detectives say the trio used bloody money and credit cards stolen from carter for gas and mcdonalds, all from a wallet that had been shot through while still on his body. Emily turner, kpix 5. A dog that bolted from its owners home and attacked a woman on lori road will be will be euthanized. The mauling sent the woman to the hospital. Police say the victim was doing yardwork when the dog locked its jaw around her arm. The dog was described as a 4 yearold pit bull. San jose police are searching for the person who shot and killed a man near the los lagos golf course early this morning. The victim was found on lone bluff way just before 1 00 a. M. Today City Attorney Dennis Herrera subpoenaed the group behind millennium tower. He believes Millennium Partners may have purposely left hundreds of buyers in the dark. In a statement, herrera said, quote, i have serious concerns that the disclosures required by state law. Did not contain information about the settling of the property. Less than a halfhour after releasing his staple, millennium towers pr team of reached out and then the developer held a News Conference announcing that, yes, the 58story building is sinking a little but that despite the settlement thats occurred, the building is 100 safe. It wants to convert the stops to raised platform stops. But that takes away Parking Spaces like these. Muni also wants to eliminate several stops to speed up service. Its going to affect the merchants in a very negative way because it will take away a lot of parking and a lot of business and its going to displace a lot of the cars to the overflowing neighborhoods. But while the private owners spent 30 years mowing this grass for fire safety, the county simply let it grow. We started having problems when the grass grew more than 5 feet high. Reporter talk with homeowners up here and they will tell you that on a warm day like this, its not rattlesnakes they worry about. They are far more concerned with coming across one of these one cigarette could start it blazing. Reporter just like that, the debate caught fire, to mow or not to mow. And i think thats what this plan does. Reporter those changes were never part of the plan when neighbors bought this space. Our neighborhood is fill with professional litigants. Theres 7 homeowners associations i think. Reporter its a case of not really knowing what you have until you actually have it.
