We are catching crabs on november 15 right in the shadow of famous restaurants like aliotos and scomas and something tells me some of these crabs will be head there is perhaps as soon as tonight p day one of crab season a success. Remember, last year because of that domoic acid outbreak nobody was catching crabs. Lets look at video. Look at these crabs off the boat. Even one carries about 1,000 pounds of crab in the room that were standing in right now. There are at least 16,000 of those, so 16,000 pounds of crab in this one warehouse at pier 45. So a lot of fish coming in. Jackie ward has the reports from the boats this morning heading out on a successful day. Reporter long before the sun came up, these guys had already taken a trip out to sea to drop off some pots and come back for a nap. Glad everything is on time. Everybody is hoping for the best. Reporter last season was dismal. Toxic acid levels in crabs were too high for much of the season making it impossible for local fishermen to financially recover. The people we spoke to on the piers this morning think the crab will price out between 4. 25 and 4. 50 per pound this season meaning these vendors will sell it for about 8. Right out of the pot just crack clean, thats it. Sweet enough, it doesnt need anything else. Reporter he has been working here on Fishermans Wharf for 30 years. He said he is ready to sell bay area crab again. We were were getting crab in washington and oregon and the toxin, people havent been buying. Reporter 60 miles of the sonoma mendocino coastline are closed to crabbing. They are testing for acid north of point reyes and so far tests from eureka, Crescent City and trinidad are clean but still the state is waiting until december 1 to give the all clear. Its probably discriminatory. Um, they are replacing us with a primarily young all indian population. And right now, there is diversity there. They are treating their employees improper, unfairly, illegally and bad public policy. The mta is tossing around the idea of creating tech shuttle hubs to reduce the number of stops around the city but if those buses are not as convenient, a study shows tech workers will probably just drive to work. Clogging the streets and the highways even more than they are now. The mta board wont make a decision on hubs until next year. Criminals are training dogs to become vicious weapons to help commit crimes. Many of those dogs end up neglected and abandoned. Reporter this dog trainer scours the streets of los angeles six days a week looking for stray or neglected animals. I just love working with dogs. You know . Seeing dogs in a comfortable place. Reporter more and more he says he is finding abandoned dogs that were trained by criminals to become vicious weapons. I just seen dogs come to the shelters, to the class with scars on their face. You know, they been in a battle. Reporter Authorities Say they have seen a surge of dogs used to help commit crimes. They have been used in cases of robbery, rape, assault. Reporter this attorney works exclusively on cases involving dog bites. He says some felons are using dogs like these instead of guns to avoid being sent back to jail. Felons are not allowed to have weapons anywhere. They know that the vicious dog can be used as successfully to commit a crime as a gun or a knife.
