Two have scared off in berkeley under the protective banner of free speech only to then turn on each other, this time with 20 arrests. We asked berkeley councilwoman kate harrison, was this a political rally or a rumble . A rumble. It became a rumble. Is berkeley the new ground zero for this . I dont know. I dont know. I certainly hope not. Id probably say it was both. Its challenging. They had helmets, shields, weapons. And this is something we really havent seen before. Something that they may be seeing again and possibly regularly. City officials told me on and off camera that one of the good things was that nobody instantly on the by side got hurt. The man shown on that video punching the woman is a selfdescribed white nationalist. 30yearold nathan dimigo is a marine and undergraduate at california state stanislaus. Hes the founder of a group called identity europa which places flyers at College Campuses claiming white superiority. The town hall in San Francisco today was so raucous, police had to be called in. [ yelling ] sit down you can see the senator there getting drowned out at times by angry constituents calling her a sellout and accusing her of not standing up to the Trump Administration. Other protesters demanded that she retire. This is the first town hall that feinstein has held since she was elected in 1992. Kpix 5 political reporter melissa caen was there. The senator did have news on how shes taking on the Trump Administration. It got pretty rowdy in there but the crowd did manage to stay quiet enough for the senator to say that behind the scenes Senate Democrats are getting ready to launch several challenges against the president and may even include suing him on their own dime. Will you take a stand right now and call him what he is, dishonest, incompetent and corrupt. Reporter it didnt take long for senator feinstein to be asked about President Trump s business dealings. Will you commit to sponsoring legislation to investigate these conflicts of interest . Reporter in response, the senator rattled off a host of behind the scenes moves by Senate Democrats as a Ranking Member of the judiciary committee, senator feinstein got a new staff. That new staff is looking very closely at the clause as well as whether we can in fact deny certain federal payments for business trips of his sons. Reporter then she drops this. Right now senator blumenthal is leading an effort asking each one of us to contribute an amount of money for a court case and were looking at that because we want to see whats the top number and once we know what the liability is, then we can make a decision and the hope is that there will be 41 of us that will be on that court case. Reporter 41 senators as plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the president would be completely explosive. It could impact negotiations on everything from the Affordable Care act to the budget. Thats not all that happened today. When an audience member said she was nervous about the Trump Administration rolling back the protections of the violence against women act, the senator did something politicians are loathed to do. She made a promise. I will give you my assurance now that nothing will happen to the violence against womens act. Reporter all this was well received by the audience, but some still want to see a different candidate for senate in 2018. Benjamin becker is with the group the peoples town hall. Its a sixyear term. She is just not the person we need to carry us through the 2020 election. Id like to see barbara lee. Barbara lee is a democrat. Shes a congresswoman who represents oakland. We reached out to her office for comment but have not heard back. The Democratic Party would probably not support a sitting congresswoman challenging a sitting senator where both are democrats so its unlikely lee would run, but anything can happen in 2018 in california. New at 6 00, were learning more about a terrifying encounter with a Mountain Lion in san mateo county. A woman says a big cat snuck in to her bedroom while she was sleeping and snatched her little dog. This happened early this morning in the town of pescadero south of half moon bay. Thats where kpix 5s len ramirez is tonight. Folks here in pescadero are used to seeing wildlife almost on a daily basis but this encounter with a Mountain Lion is the talk of a town and a family who lives up in the hills is just glad none of the human family members were hurt or attacked, but theyre missing one of their fourlegged family members. The door was slightly open. Maybe like this. Reporter the door was only slightly ajar to let in fresh air while they were sleeping but it was enough to let a Mountain Lion slip in and take away a beloved pet, right next to a sleeping child. As soon as i saw it walk back out the way it was walking, i thought thats a lion. And the lion must have just grabbed her because she instantly stopped barking. Reporter victoria and her daughter catalina still have a hard time believing a Mountain Lion could be so bold. Lenora is a rescue dog and hasnt been seen since. Blood stains on the doorstep are the only signs left behind by the intruder. Pretty shocking. I heard my little dog bark and it wasnt a bark ive heard her do before. And i knew that something wasnt right. But i kept my eyes closed. Reporter it happened in the hills just above pescadero, a remote area where Mountain Lion sightings have become more common. The game warden is investigating and examined what appeared to be Mountain Lion tracks that were spotted down the lane. I took a couple trails closer to the house, often several directions and down this road where their dog was kind of alerting and i didnt find anything down there either. Reporter the Mountain Lion has not been spotted and without the carcass of the dog, it will be hard to track it down. Neighbors are being warned to be especially wary of Mountain Lions in this area as this one showed it will go just about anywhere to find its prey. This Mountain Lion is believed to be an adolescent due to the size. Adolescent Mountain Lions are known to be more erratic. A couple years ago, one of their animals was attacked, a horse was jumped on by a Mountain Lion but the horse was able to get away. Len ramirez, kpix 5. A live look right now outside at ocean beach. The state is debating putting restrictions on building and maintaining sea walls. As kpix 5s emily turner shows us, some people say it would spill doom for their properties. Whats going to happen with the houses and structures along the coast has long been at debate with the California Coastal submission. Now the California State Legislature has picked it up. Folks who live along the coast are not happy about the possibility. Its an absurd notion. Reporter the folks living on simpson beach want the state to back off. Proposed legislation would make it much more difficult for homeowners built after january 1st, 1977 to fortify their property along the coast. It would require a strict permitting process for construction of armoring structures along the shoreline if theyre allowed at all. People have bought properties along the ocean or beach and have built things along the beach and now the legislature is proposing retroactively to say those properties cant be protected. Reporter if passed, sea walls may not be able to be repaired if damaged, leaving homeowners behind it forever exposed to the sea. Its all in the name of natural shore lines. The bill, backed by the coastal commission, argues things like sea walls cause erosion and restrict Natural Habitats while also inhibiting Public Access and recreation along the coast. Preserving the natural environment. I think the giant seawall [ inaudible ] while it would keep the beach looking more natural, it wouldnt leave much for homeowners when the tide rises. Im tired of hearing from families and children that theyre hearing needles in the park. Reporter shes pushing the city to install similar boxes at other parks where drug users hang out. Its not that i want to encourage this type of behavior. Thats not what we want to see on our streets but the reality is its happening. Reporter the idea of more boxes is getting mixed reviews on social media. One critic says absolutely crazy. Do you really think users are going to go shoot up and look for the needle box . If anything theyll think parks are a safe place to shoot up. But she says this shows why the boxes work. Bobby washington teaches at the School Across the street. Theyd find needles, rubbers. We stopped coming over. Reporter the city started a bathroom Monitoring Program called pit stop. It includes boxes for used syringes. Its helped clean up the area and actually enable the kids from across the street who actually are going to school here to use this park. Reporter its estimated 22,000 iv drug users call San Francisco home and throwing away a syringe in a trash can is illegal in california which kim says help explain why so many end up in the wrong place. We should give individuals a place to safely dispose of them. The city is reviewing the proposal and according to San Francisco public works over a recent eightmonth period more than 6600 syringes were dropped off at various pit stop locations.
