New at 6 00, San Francisco has reached a deal with airbnb in the longrunning fight over whether hosts must register with the city. Anyone who offers a short term rental in San Francisco is supposed to register with the city. But most dont. But thats all about to end because this time next year, no registration, no posting your rental. This morning, we signed a Settlement Agreement ending the federal lawsuit that airbnb and home away had filed against San Francisco. It all started when San Francisco passed an ordinance in 2015 to regulate short term rentals. That only permanent residents can rent out their homes. They can only list one property, their primary residence and rent out the entire unit a maximum of 90 days per year. People are required to register with the city. Reporter but the registration turned out to be a problem. Theres 2100 registered, listed and we know there were about 8,000 listed. So the fact of the matter is i dont think its a secret to anybody that there have been a lot of folks gaming the system and violating the law. Reporter in 2016, the city made platforms like airbnb responsible for unregistered listings. Airbnb and home away sued in federal court to stop the law. The judge ruled in favor of San Francisco, but also said there were serious questions about how airbnb or any platform could ensure their hosts are registered. Under the agreement, hosts will go to register their short term rental with the city, obtain a business license and pay the required fee all through the airbnb platform. Reporter airbnb is still on the hook. [ indiscernible ] is advocates for the regulation of short term rentals. Also airbnb has to pay the city 40,000 for the citys work to integrate with the new online system. The city law holding platforms responsible for their hosts applies to all short term rental sites, not just airbnb. The raiders have closed on the purchase of new land in las vegas. So chances are youll find a clear spot. The upside, all that wood comes in handy for bonfires. Perhaps the toughest spot today is Capitola Beach where there seems to be more wood than sand. I got rid of all the smaller sticks that are there. Reporter thats kind of annoying. It is. Reporter back in january, it looked like this. The main beach was littered with debris. After the annual spring clean up, look at it now. The city brought in bulldozers and pushed the debris out to the ocean. We have no choice. Either that or dont come to the beach.
