A cal rugby player was left paralyzed after a championship game. 20yearold Robert Paylor underwent surgery over the weekend and is now recovering. Juliette goodrich is live at the Medical Center where family and teammates are rallying around that young man. Reporter alan, its a heart breaking story. Hes a star player, playing in the natural championships only to get injured and be told he may never walk again. Robert paylor, a u. C. Berkeley sophomore was injured during saturdays championship win over arkansas state. The match was played in santa clara. The 65 starter was injured early in the game. It was during a rugby maul that he was pushed to the ground, left paralyzed from the waist down. This video from the match in february. Robert was a starter at the position which calls for height and strength. After his surgery saturday, the entire Cal Rugby Team visited him in the hospital. In the waiting room, they signed well wishes to him on a cal jersey. Teammates say robert has a strong faith and positive outlook. They say hes always smiling and never fails to light up a room. Even with a neck brace on, hes still smiling from his hospital bed. His team says despite what lies ahead, robert and his family are touched by all of the support from friends and the community. Roberts former coach in carmichael says robert isnt one to give up hope. A very good young man of faith. He believes in his faith a lot. So im sure that will help him and his family get through it and anything we can do, we will support him in any way that we can. We love him and were praying for him dearly every day. Roberts family and his friends have been by his side since saturday. He had surgery saturday night. Again, hes paralyzed from the waist down. A verdict in the case of sierra lamars murder. A jury finding Antolin Garcia torres guilty of kidnapping and killing the teen. We were in the courtroom as the decision was read. Reporter Antolin Garcia torres was convicted for the kidnapping and killing of sierra lamar, but sierras friends, now grown young women, say he also robbed them of a sense of innocence and security. She was sierras cheer squad teammate who came to listen to the verdict. [ inaudible ] i dont think people would understand what its like to be that young and know it could happen and know it could have been you. It could have been any one of my friends. And you lose that safety. Reporter for sierras family a victory in the courtroom, but still the emptiness of missing their daughter. Nothing will take away the pain and the sorrow that we experience every day. Reporter sierra disappeared on her way to school in 2012. Antolin garciatorres was arrested two months later. The case relied on forensic evidence. Sierras dna in his car, her hair on a rope in his trunk and his dna on her jeans found dumped by the side of the road. It took 12 hours of deliberations for this jury to reach a verdict, a huge victory for the prosecution tasked with proving murder, even though sierras body was never found. Justice is served here for us today. Justice for sierra. That gives us some form of relief. Reporter he was also found guilty of three previous kidnapping attempts near morgan hill safe ways, which a prosecutor called warmups for sierra lamar. Very unfortunate situation. She did not give her name. A lot of people like to launch there and land there. They can stay aloft because of the up current of wind coming up off the ocean. This year were right around 46 rescues, which its about 2 rescues per week at our aquatic area. Reporter why so many people are getting into trouble isnt clear . The Fire Department suggests it may be due to simply more people coming to the beach. Or unusual currents in water temperatures due to the winter rain. Whatever the reason, the Fire Department is beefing up. Were in the process of getting two new rescue vehicles. Like this one here . Like this one you can see behind us. Its going to be a lot newer. Crews pump water from a far away source into the pumpkin which is then used to resupply the trucks and hoses. Getting in shape for the heat and stress of fire season takes time. It doesnt take long to knock the dust off, but we get out here and make sure were in top shape for when we go out and do the real thing.
