New at 6 00 a tiny object caused a big backup at the port of oakland this afternoon. Longshoremen at a busy terminal walked off the job for hours after discovering a small noose. They say its part of a larger problem at the port. Melissa. Reporter yeah, veronica. Were here at the Oakland International Container Terminal at the port of oakland. And theres plenty of activity here at all times day and night but this morning for several hours, everything came to a standstill when about 100 longshoremen walked off the job. At issue was a noose found on the seat of one of the trucks that the workers use to move around the terminal. Derek mohammad is the second treasurer secretarytreasurer of Longshoreman Union 10. About 60 of its americans are black. This morning another member of our local discovered a hangmans loose inside excuse me, a hangmans noose inside a truck on the terminal and so this is the third incident within six months but the second incident within two weeks. Reporter in november, a racial slur the n word was painted on a piece of equipment. And then just two weeks ago a hangmans noose was found on a fence near the entrance. Now this. Quite naturally, that produces a feeling of uneasiness, um, fear, discomfort, um, safety. And so our members asserted their right to work in a safe environment. Reporter sfa marine is the Management Company that runs this port. And their Spokesman Says they were not aware of any prior incidents. They also told us that the noose was small, about the size of a key chain. After the walkout this morning, an arbitrator was called and he said it was not a threat to health and safety and ordered the workers back to work after lunch and will be docked for the pay on strike. Longshoremans work is dangerous, muhammad says, and they have to know their coworkers have their backs. Now Muhammad Said the Security Camera that might have caught the person doing this was not working at the time. And we just learned from the unions president that sfa marine has agreed to fix those cameras inside and also agreed to put up a reward for information leading to the identification of the perpetrator. Live at the port of oakland, melissa caen, kpix 5. Now, the port said it does not tolerate bigotry or discrimination of any kind. It added, we have been in close contact with the terminal operator, they are investigating the incident and taking steps to prevent a recurrence. The woman at the center of the opd sex scandal is poised to walk away from the whole mess with nearly a million dollars. The City Attorney is now recommending a 989,000 settlement for 19yearold jasmine abuslin, who used to go by the name celeste guap. The former teen prostitute had been seeking 66 million saying officers exploited her for sex in exchange for protection from police stings. One officer was ordered to stand trial just last week. A skydiving business with a history of fatal accidents is in the news again. A man was killed yesterday during a jump from the Lodi Parachute Center in ocampo in san joaquin county. We have a report. Reporter the skies bring euphoria to many skydivers but on wednesday, the adrenaline pumping sport took the life of 42yearold matthew ciancia. I watched him dangle under his canopy unresponsive not trying to fight it and just tumbled down and down. Reporter he was on the same flight wednesday. He described watching ciancio spiral out of control. 10 or 15 feet from the ground, he finally cut away from his mains which suggested to me that maybe he was unconscious for most of that. Came to consciousness not knowing what was happening and instinctively went to emergency procedures but by then it was too late. Reporter they had been flying together in their wing suits for more than two years. He says his friend was an experienced jumper and believes his main parachute failed causing it to open too fast. Youre going 120 miles an hour. And so that could be stopped in an instant gives your body a huge shock. Possibly a hard opening of his main parachute. By the time he was able to, um, um, release the main parachute to try to initiate emergency procedures he was too low to the ground. Reporter what could cause the parachute to have a hard opening . More than likely it was an error in the packing or possibly his body position as he deployed. Reporter crouch says its uncommon for a hard opening to knock a skydiver out. A killer hobby where one wrong move by even the highly experienced is all it takes to go down. Accidents happen and the end results are unfortunately often fatal. The first lawsuit has been filed in the wake of a deadly botulism outbreak blamed on cheese sauce. Lavinia kelly filed suit against valley oakland food and fuel company in walnut grove and the supplier of the cheese. An antioch father of two also got sick this month. A 37yearold man died last week. They are among 10 people hospitalized. Kelly the mother of three is paralyzed and in intensive care since eating the tainted cheese. The social media sleuthing that tracked him down. If you build it they will come but theres a catch. Why a bay area city is keeping this brandnew field of dreams locked up. And counting calories . Millions of dollars of their money went toward a big overhaul of the citys sports field. But kpix 5s len ramirez shows us the general public is no longer invited to play ball, len . Reporter well, veronica, this field was locked down and has a soccer field and a football field. It was locked all day today until just about half an hour ago when the coach of this Girls Soccer Team came through and unlocked the gates so his team could practice. So this is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way here in milpitas because this field has a history of being open. Since it was renovated its been locked. Now people want it unlocked. They are some of the best sports facilities around. Fields of dreams for football and soccer encircled by a running track all of it kept in nearly pristine condition by the city of milpitas. But if you try to use them, be prepared for a lockout. We are Walking Around the whole field trying to find and entry. Reporter he and his cousin played football here when they were natural grass but ever since the city upgraded the fields with artificial turf last summer, you cant just walk on and play anymore. It sucks. Its obviously up like theres nothing we can do about. We come there and its locked but you kind of go okay, oh well, well find another place. Reporter after spending 3. 4 million for rehab, the city decided to open them by reservation only usually to sports teams who pay to play. Others may use the facilities on a limited basis when they are open. But thats only on certain days and times. But a rebellion is now starting up. We pay taxes for that and we cant use it. Um, should be open to the public. Youre putting it in our face and, um, were keeping it maintained by paying for it so think we should be able to use it all we need. Reporter a baseball coach and City Employee told me off camera that the old field had problems with litter and graffiti. And the city doesnt want a repeat after its big investment. But others say the city should find a compromise. In a city like this you close it and thats the purpose of this facility. You need to try to keep it as open as much open as possible. Reporter Public Meeting to Gather Community input is scheduled for next wednesday at 6 30 at the barbara Lee Community center on milpitas boulevard. After going up a few flights of stairs and Walking Around a few minutes, the fitbit said i covered a total of. 6 miles. It says i have burned 871 calories. No. You buy that . Definitely not. [ laughter ] reporter dr. Michael matson says i probably burned just 65 calories. He should know. He is one of the coauthors of a stanford study looking at the accuracy of smartwatches. They examined 7. 60 people worked out wearing the watches while also wearing a clinical grade device to measure caloric output and compare the results. But you know when we looked at the calories burned they were far off. Most of the time. Between 20 and 90 off. Reporter dr. Ashley is the lead author of the study and declined to rank the watches but would say the median error rate of the fitbit was 27 . But the other was 93 . The researchers say the danger in overreporting the number of calories burned is that people use this to justify a treat or end every indulging themselves. I have burned more than 1 knee calories by doing nothing basically. They go to the gym and burn 400 calories and say okay ive got that completely so they grab food. Reporter smartwatches were giving off dubious numbers here. Do you feel like you burned 1200 calories . No, i dont. I need more exercise. La of laugh. 405 calories. You believe that 405 calories . So i guess i was this is a pretty hilly course. But that seems like a lot for just less than four miles. Reporter all righty. So a lot of these companies are pushing back saying that these researchers didnt set the right parameter and the researchers say you didnt prompt us to set in the right parameter. Stanford is interested in working with Companies Based here in Silicon Valley to make the next generation of these fitness trackers better. Live in campbell, kiet do, kpix 5. Wow.
