KPIX KPIX 5 News At 6AM December 11, 2015

And all along interstate 80 from baxter to the nevada state line. There are a number of accidents, slick roads. Heres liza with more on that. We are going to chopper 5. They are giving us a birdseye view of some of the delays we have been talking about westbound 580. We have had several accidents all of them on 580 in oakland where theres been reports of flooding as well and cars hydroplaning. Right here westbound 580 looks like this might be along highway 24. Certainly we are seeing very long delays for both 580 and highway 24 at this hour. Westbound 580 is backed up beyond park boulevard. And right here is another example right here this fender bender and spinout an example of what were seeing on bay area roads. Cars simply losing control hydroplaning and crashing into the Center Divider or the right hand shoulder. So give yourself some extra time to get into work or school this morning. I want to move on and show you this map of 580 westbound where we have been seeing those delays beyond park. Save yourself some time. Take north 880 instead as your alternate to those backups. And i want to send a big thank you out to the El Cerrito Police department who sent us this picture of the 10500 block of san pablo avenue in el cerrito where the icy roads are a problem this morning. So they are warning folks especially if you plan on heading out right now, just to take it nice and easy out there. Certainly you dont wan to be sliding around in that. I80 still okay in terms of traffic delays as it rolls through berkeley and emeryville. We do have an accident clearing walnut creek interchange southbound 680 near south main. Ill have more kcbs traffic in less than ten minutes. You know, i have been totally bewildered by that photograph sent out by the El Cerrito Police department. So i wanted to take a better look at it. And i wanted to share it with you. It looks like its snowing, right . This is grapple. We can have grapple showers here in the bay area. Its also known as soft hail or snow pellets. Its precipitation that forms when its cool as far as the droplets are concerned freezing hitting the pavement. If you touch it its snowlike and very soft. Thank you for tweeting out that wonderful photograph, the El Cerrito Police department. We had hail, thunder and lightning in the past four hours. Now we continue to see bands of showers containing some heavy rain at times. This is not like a brandnew storm. This is all the passage of that cold front. This is in its wake. This is wraparound moisture and we have been seeing some snow on the fly in the Mount Hamilton area and once the sun makes an appearance at 7 15, we are not going to see bright sunshine at all but once it lightens up well be able to see if that snowing is sticking. We have moderate rainfall in morgan hill. A new batch of energy is pushing onshore in the northern portion of our bay area and sipping into the Golden Gate Bridge and that zipping into the Golden Gate Bridge and that cell is pushing into chinatown in San Francisco. Its raining over the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see the raindrops falling now on the very slick pavement. Temperatures right now 11 to 15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Thats because it was a cold front that raced through the bay area so cooler air is coming in. Periods of rain today, high surf warning today, Coastal Flood Advisory in effect as well. A thunderstorm could pop at any time. Well talk more about this coming up in 10 minutes. We now know four people were killed last night when a medical helicopter crashed in kern county. The crew was taking a critical patient from Porterville Municipal Airport to a hospital in bakersfield. Dispatchers lost contact with the chopper shortly after 7 p. M. They notified fire and sheriffs officials that the aircraft was missing and less than two hours later search crews did find the debris field on a private property outside the town of mcfarland but it was too hard to get to because of the rugged terrain. We got crews in there an hour later on foot and confirmed the crash site. We are being told there were four souls on board and it appears there are no survivors. It went down in rain and fog but its not clear if weather was a factor. The victims include the pilot, a nurse, a paramedic and the patient. Fbi is now looking into the threat in santa clara that forced the evacuation of the council on americanislamic relations or cair. This isnt the first threat. Kpix 5 reporter live for us with more on how police are handling the increase in threats. Kiet. Reporter yeah. Absolutely. They have been getting more threats throughout the week since those attacks in San Bernardino and paris. The Santa Clara Police are working with the fbi and they are conducting tests on the letter and the powder. It was a tense day in santa clara yesterday at the offices of the council on American Islamic relations, also known as cair. It was evacuated for hours and hazmat crews cleared the office after somebody sent a letter with the word infidel written on it with white powder in it. The staffers whom we interviewed on monday about islamphobia and donald trump were taken to the hospital just in case. Were hoping the substance was harmless but i think folks are on edge and at the same time, um, feeling defiant that we will not be silenced. We are working to protect the civil rights of all americans. Reporter we are learning more about the woman who threw hot coffee on a man and then hit him with an umbrella as his friends were praying at lake Chabot Regional Park. The woman has been identified as Denise Slater a Program Technician in the Parole Division for the state department of correction. She has been with the department for 10 years. The incident is now being investigated as a hate crime since she yelled such things as allah is evil. As of yesterday, her Employment Status is not changed but the department has launched an internal investigation. The man who was attacked in the video has been overwhelmed by the positive response on social media. Im kind of not happy about what happened. A bit angry. But if you see the comments on the support from people, from real americans, you will that makes me a lot happier. Reporter and back here live at the cair offices in santa clara, by the way, their main headquarters in washington, dc also received a letter with a white powder inside. It was evacuated, as well. Kiet do, kpix 5. National cair office in washington also received a suspicious letter. Officials there say it contained a white powder and message of hate. Tests were negative for anything dangerous. Its unclear what that substance was. A new cbs poll released this morning shows that nearly 6 in 10 americans say the u. S. Should not temporarily ban muslims from other countries from entering the u. S. But there are sharp differences by political party. 54 of republicans support a ban on muslims entering the country while most democrats and independents oppose that idea. The public is divided on whether the federal government should keep a database on muslims here in the u. S. It appears the San Bernardino attackers were plotting something bigger. The fbi has been going through computers and other digital devices found at syed farooks home. A dive team searched for a hard drive in a lake yesterday hoping it may have information on syed farook and Tashfeen Malik terrorist ties. Were seeking evidence of anything that had to do with this particular crime. At the end of the day we came out, we may come up with nothing. We just dont know yet. According to the l. A. Times, investigators believe the couple was in the final stages of planning a larger attack possibly at a school or college. Yesterday, the first of the 14 victims was laid to rest. 27yearold Yvette Velasco was the youngest of those killed. Today a civil rights attorney will announce a federal lawsuit against San Francisco police after officers shot and killed a man in the bayview last week. Anne makovec is live at police headquarters. I understand the Attorney Says he is planning to release some new evidence today. Reporter yes. Thats right. Attorney john burruss. He says there are new findings video and medical findings that will make this a federal civil rights lawsuit justified. We have already seen a couple of video clips taken by witnesses with cell phones showing officers surrounding mario woods in the bayview on december 2. He is armed with a kitchen knife accused of stabbing someone earlier in the day. Officers say he came at one of them with a knife and that they had no choice but to open fire. Now, the Police Department has faced criticism. People were outraged at a public hearing last week. The chief is asking for permission to arm his officers with tasers. It would have been another option before using deadly force but some city supervisors say there may be a more systemic problem. I think the question here for me is not about whether we need to have taser in sfpd. The question is what are the Tactical Training programs in place. Even without tasers was there a better thing to do . I believe there is a better way to address the situation. Reporter tasers are used in every major city in the u. S. In the Police Departments except detroit and San Francisco. Now, back to this lawsuit that is expected to be announced today, we are expecting some very strong words and well be hearing again from mario woods family. John burruss has already said that the Police Officers in the case were using woods as, quote, target practice. Live in San Francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. In a footnote the public is overwhelmingly in favor of equipping San Francisco police with tasers. Our exclusive kpix 5 surveyusa poll found a large majority backed that idea. 83 in fact say they are in favor of providing stun guns for the police. Today the truck driver involved in a deadly Chain Reaction crash on highway 17 last year will be sentenced. The man was driving a truck loaded with dirt downhill on highway 17 at santa cruz when he slammed into stopped traffic. That Chain Reaction crash involving 10 cars killed one man and injured 7 others. The 24yearold driver from union city faces up to a year in jail. An interactive light show is going up near the highway 87 underpass in san jose today. The three collections of light ranges are located at santa clara street, san fernando street and san carlos between market and 4th. The display will change based on pedestrian and car traffic. A Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for 5 p. M. Time is 6 11. Surveillance video capturing a running gun battle on the streets of the east bay. What led to that shootout. The El Cerrito Police Department Just sent me this picture of the 10500 block of san pablo avenue where they are saying that ice is an issue this morning. And they want to ask folks before you head out the door to take it easy out there. Slow down because it is certainly very slick on bay area roads. Thank you very much to the El Cerrito Police department for sending us that picture. Meantime we are seeing an issue now with a rockslide affecting traffic along highway 29 in the calistoga area. It has shut down the southbound direction near lake county highway. There are traffic delays now approaching the scene. Also flooding still being reported for 101 in both directions approaching lucky drive. Ill show you pictures of that with my next traffic report in less than 10 minutes. Roberta. Time check is 6 19. Good morning, everybody. Lets take a look at our live hidef Doppler Radar because what we are looking at is not another storm. This is a wraparound moisture or as i like to refer to its a backwash. The cold front came through the area yesterday morning. Bands of showers are developing and many of these in the overnight hours contained thunderstorms with lightning and hail. You probably know what im talking about. Oh, right now, we have some moderate to heavy downpours occurring in the northern portion of our bay area. Its pouring over the Golden Gate Bridge.
