One of many casualties after a protest against a breitbart editor got out of control. The president s weighing in. Well show you the damage next. Welcome to your health with joan lunden presented by the centers for
Disease Control and vention. Hi, im joan lunden. Diabetes is an epidemic that is sweeping our country and sadly it is not just affecting adults. Its also affecting our children. We are pleased to be joined by dr. Ann albright director of the cdcs division of diabetes translation who is here to shed some light on this really alarming subject. How serious is this . Type 1 diabetes is still the most common form in youth but we are seeing alarming growth in the number of kids with type 2 diabetes. Its certainly related to the rise in obesity. Unfortunately, many parents are unaware of this so their children are unaware. What are the other factors contributing . Type 2 diabetes runs in families. So does unhealthy eating habits and other lifestyle habits. As a mom of seven, this is just so concerning. What can we do to try to stop this . A great place to start is to develop a plan as a whole family. You certainly want to work on increasing water intake. You might have to work on that with your kids. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Certainly find ways to make
Favorite Foods hier. Oo important. Are children who have parents with type 2 diabetes more likely to also develop it . Certa these things do run in families. But it also is important to know that if you establish these habits together, theyre much more likely to be sustained. Set a new norm as a family. I love that. Set a new norm. A lot of us need to work on that. Thank you so much. Its really wonderful though that families have this resource to turn to because it is so important to the future of our youth to stop the diabetes epidemic from becoming even more prevalent. It really needs though to be addressed as a family affair. For more information visit cdc. Gov diabetestv. Thanks for watching. Im joan lunden. Sponsored by naccd with support from the centers time is 6 good morning, its thursday, february 2. Im kenny choi. Im michelle griego. Time now 6 29. Protests against the controversial right wing speaker visit to berkeley spirals out of control with destruction spreading from the cal campus to the city streets. Anne makovec is live in berkeley with the fallout from all the chaos. Reporter you can see some of the damage here behind me. The starbucks is smashed up on all sides. It is not going to be open this morning. And this is one of several pieces of damage that happened off campus after the demonstration got out of control on campus. It all started at about well, really came to a head, started coming to a head about 6 00 last night outside of the ucberkeley
Student Union. 1500 people gathered in the middle of sproul plaza and some of them started setting off fireworks aimed at

The gremlins are in the system this morning. Right . Look at this. The rain has been coming down heavily in spots. This is what it looked like on the drive in earlier this morning on the bay bridge. [ pause ] all right. Those windshield wipers are working this morning. We see that the pavement is wet and its been dry for a week so you get a lot of oil that comes close to the surface and make it extremely slippery so you need that additional braking distance this morning but its the first storm for the month of february. Good morning, everyone. We are under storm watch. [ kenny coughing ] heres our live weather camera. Actually its our live hidef
Doppler Radar and it is featuring some pockets of pretty moderate to heavy rainfall just moving in and out of the peninsula now across the san mateo and dumbarton bridge. We have that heavier precipitation lifting towards union city around highway 84. We have been getting slammed at the
Santa Cruz Mountains light to moderate rainfall there. Another cell near san leandro. As soon as i update these, these cells are moving through very quickly. They are originating off the
Pacific Ocean lifting northeast. Well continue to see waves of rain and increasing winds out of the suit the southeast to 30 sustained, gusts to 50 in the highest elevations. So everywhere you see these blue highlighted counties thats where we have a wind advisory in place until 3 a. M. Tomorrow. Basically 10 to 20 and 25 winds except the north bay calm. You, too will get gusty winds today. This is our live weather camera. We are looking to the south towards the peninsula. A few raindrops on the camera lens but look how mild the temperatures are in the 40s and 50s with the rain and the wind. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s. I did think this is a first storm of february. We have a couple more to go. Well pinpoint the timing. Lets say good morning to roqui. Reporter good morning. Its 6 33. Lets take a look at how that rain is affecting your morning commute. Starting in novato, we have southbound 101 after highway 37. This multicar crash is cleared but you have plenty of backup into petaluma. So on southbound 101 give yourself extra time to get through there. The metering lights on the bay bridge toll plaza are on so the maze to downtown will take 20 minutes. Slow between hayward and foster city. Again, the roads are wet. So make sure youre prepared to drive safely this morning. Slow on the
Altamont Pass at 25
Miles Per Hour along the way. So north tracy boulevard to the
Altamont Pass will take30 minutes. Frees up across the dublin interchange. Heres the northbound 85 connector to northbound 87 in the south bay here san jose to be exact. This twocar crash still out there blocking the right lane of that connector so give yourself extra time to get through there. All right. Roqui. Thank you, it looks like we have our technical problems in berkeley worked out so lets go back to anne makovec for more on the destructive riots there overnight. Anne. Reporter all right. Again, i am live here outside of a starbucks that was damaged last night when protests got out of control. Lets check the pictures. The trouble started at around 6 p. M. At ucberkeleys sproul plaza. A crowd of 1500 gathered there and some of them started setting off fireworks. Some aimed at
University Police who were standing at the entrance of the
Student Union building and they had expected protests here because of a planned speech involving ultraconservative breitbart editor
Milo Yiannopoulos. But the group did appear to be infiltrated by some people intent upon wreaking havoc. Many of them
Wearing Masks. They started vandalizing property, a floodlight caught flyer, flames shooting into the air. Some protestors then grabbed metal barriers, police had set them out as crowd control and they used them as weapons to break the windows of the
Student Union. It sends a message that under no means will we allow any of this to go on anywhere near berkeley. These antifascists fascists decided that that was too much, threw rocks at me, broke my phone, and decided to just decided to steal from me and break my face reporter yeah. There were some people injured during the protest. Some from projectiles being thrown amongst the crowd. Some with bloody noses, hits to the head and a lot of them were yiannopoulos supporters who say people ganged up on them. So the event was canceled around 6 30 and police demanded the crowd disperse. Hundreds stayed on campus. Others moved the demonstration into city streets and vandalized more property including some off campus banks. Now, the president tweeted about this overnight saying if ucberkeley doesnt allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view no federal funding . So theres an obvious threat there. Ucberkeley sends out a statement reading in part so were going to have a couple of debates going on today. One about free speech. And another about how police should have dealt with this. They certainly showed a lot of restraint overnight. Live in berkeley, anne makevoc, kpix 5. The friendly relationship between the u. S. And australia may be in jeopardy after reports of a contentious phone call between
President Trump and australias prime minister. President trump is upset about a onetime deal to transfer 1,000 refugees to the u. S. They are currently held in remote
Detention Centers in australia unwanted by australia. Many of the refugees are from iran, iraq, sudan and somalia. Countries included in the president s travel ban. The agreement was negotiated during the obama administration. Meanwhile, two republican senators now say they will reject the president s nominee for education secretary betsy devos. Alaska senator
Lisa Murkowski got an overwhelming number of calls from constituents. Their concern centers as mine do on mrs. Devos lack of experience with
Public Education and the lack of knowledge that she portrayed in her confirmation hearing. Devos is a
Charter School and voucher advocate as well as a major gop donor. She has dodged acquisitions of plagiarism and answered questions on educational philosophy. Susan collins of maine will also vote no. If one more republican votes against her and no democrats break ranks, devos would not be confirmed. And republicans are gearing up for a fight against democrats in their bid to confirm
Supreme Court nominee neil gorsuch. Yesterday,
President Trump suggested lawmakers use the
Nuclear Option in order to push the nomination through. That would allow gorsuch to be confirmed with a simple majority of 51 votes in the
Senate Rather than 60 votes. The full senate will vote on attorney general nominee
Jeff Sessions after a
Committee Hearing yesterday. All 11 republicans voted to advance sessions nomination. All nine democrats opposed him. The sfpd is suspects spending involvement with the fbis joint
Terrorism Task force. The program raised concerns that local
Police Departments will be asked to participate in illegal surveillance and
Immigration Enforcement under the

We will continue to do everything in our power to protect the public and i cant reemphasize that enough. Kpix 5 security analyst jeff harp says that the suspension of the participation with the task force will have an impact on the department. S fpd is going to lose insight into valuable cases.
