The Transportation Authority tells us that it installed a new camera at market and octavia last week. For the first 30 days they will issue only warnings to violators. We have new video tonight of the disgraced form Santa Clara County supervisor George Shirakawa being led out of a courtroom. He was sentenced late this afternoon to a year in jail for stealing public funds. Shirakawa was also placed on three years probation. He blamed his crimes on depression and a gambling addiction. The prosecution says this case sets an example. The public is able to see with their own eyes that someone who stole from the public and lied to the public and was a very powerful and important person was held accountable as everyone else would be under the law and sent to jail. As part of the plea deal when shirakawa is released, he cannot hold Public Office ever again in california. Tonight the parents of that 18yearold who was intentionally lit on fire on a bus are speaking out. We heard from them a bit on our 5 p. M. Newscast. Now at 6 00, our own da lin on their reaction to the suspect being charged with a hate crime. Da. Reporter being charged as an adult with hate crime. During my interview with the victims mother and father, the family came across as very peaceful, a very forgiving family. In fact, the victims father says he is trying to reserve judgment on the suspect. He says he is doing so because he doesnt know why the suspect targeted his son. Without really knowing what happened, i cant not mind of another person. I cant know the motivation or intentions. Reporter Carl Fleischman has a lot of questions for the teen accused of setting his son on fire. He says those Unanswered Questions prevent him from talking about how he feels towards the suspect. In my heart, i i i believe in the goodness of of humanity. Reporter 16yearold Richard Thomas was arrested for the crime and appeared in court yesterday. His family says he is remorseful and family members want to meet with fleischman to personally apologize. Fleischman says for now, he wants to focus on helping sasha get better. Its for sasha. Reporter sashas parents spent the morning tying colorful ribbons on the 57 bus routes the bus that sasha took when he was attacked. Its tie a ribbon for sasha. Its support for allowing people to dress differently if they want to dress differently. Reporter Oakland Police believe it was the skirt that 18yearold Sasha Fleischman wore on monday that made him a target aboard a bus. Sasha identifies himself as neither male nor female. Police say the suspect used a lighter to set sashas skirt on fire causing second and third degree burns to his legs. Sashas being really well taken care of and in stable condition. Reporter he remains at the st. Francis burn center. He had one surgery and will need more. His father is thankful for all the support. They say its this kind of support that has turned a tragedy into something positive. Grateful for all the love and care and support that people have shown us. Sashas classmates at berkeleys Maybeck High School declared today wear a skirt for sasha day. Many of the schools roughly 100 students and teachers participated. Whether you knew sasha or not, its really just important for the whole school, i think thats what makes it unique that the whole school came together in support. During the lunch break those who wore skirts had their pictures taken so it could be sent to sasha. Communities in california damaged by the rim fire this year are not getting any help from the feds. Fema the federal Emergency Management Agency Denied governor browns request for money to help pay for some of the damage. Fema said californias Third Largest wildfire in history was not severe enough to qualify as a federal disaster. The state has 30 days to appeal. Veterinarians at ucdavis getting their feathers ruffled over a tiny pest threatening one of the states most majestic predators. Kpix 5 reporter don ford tells us that they are spending months rehabilitating sick golden eagles. Reporter this is a golden eagle that was found near brushy peak in the east bay. The California Department of fish and wildlife said it was so infested with blood sucking mites that most of its feathers on its legs, its belly and its face were gone. So severe they brought it here to the ucdavis veterinary schools Raptor Center to save its life. Little tiny vampires. This bird would not have made it had it not been brought to rehab and its been here three months. Its probably going to need to be here a few more months before its going to grow its feathers back out and be able to return to the world. Reporter the patient is kept in this special area away from the other birds. After three months of treatment, the bird looks a lot better. Feathers are growing back. And its attention to suroundings is returning. This is the first adult golden eagle to ever get these mites. Researchers have a lot of questions. Do you know how they got on the bird . No. We dont. Reporter any idea . We dont at this point. You know . I mean, we have speculated about several things. Reporter sure. You know . But we really dont know. Reporter this is a different eagle and shows what they should look like. Thick brown feathers, legs completely covered, huge talons that will rip your arm apart if not protected. And biologists believe there may be more injured eagles in the east bay. If they were to see a bird that looked like it was missing feathers on its head on legs, to contact their local department of fish and wildlife office. Kpix 5s len ramirez explains how the whole thing began with an ad on ebay. Reporter this happened on october 8 but police were just now able to make an identification of the suspect. Apparently it started out as a routine ebay transaction with the two parties agreeing to meet in the parking lot of this taco bell. The suspect told the sellers that he wanted to buy this pet for his daughter but he didnt want to pay the price they were asking. They began haggling and then the suspect got angry. Thats when the sellers say he became a monster. The nineweekold female pomeranian pup named kisses had been advertised on ebay for 700. The sellers agreed to meet 38 yearold juan chavez on 700 block of story road at 11 30 p. M. When net the couple agreed to let the suspect hold the dog when they met up. He allegedly held them up and stole the dog. They are thinking they are going to settle puppy and again to sell the puppy and again that was the whole idea in the meet. Then youre kind of presented with a prospective buyer who presents a gun, takes the pet that you are intending to sell and then in turn tries to go ahead and steal your vehicle as well at gunpoint. Fortunate for the victims, nobody was injured. They were able to get away safely. But unfortunately, the suspect got away as well. Reporter kisses hasnt been seen since. Police are looking for potential witnesses and going over surveillance video. They identified the suspect as a known felon with an extensive criminal past. Merchants say the area is usually busy, clean, not much crime but say this points out the dangers of online transactions. Reporter if you have ever walked through a cemetery like this, you cant help but be struck by how pristine everything is, how straight and how aligned the headstones are. Well, up until now, individual attention had to be paid to each and every headstone. But now the va has come up with a system that will make sure these headstones sit perfectly for years to come. It all starts with removing the individually planted headstones and the construction of a Massive Concrete foundation. Row by row, you can see the process taking place where they pour in a concrete footing, put in a box for each headstone and when they drop the headstone in, then they pound in this decomposed granite to the point where you cant even move it. And thats where the attention to detail gets incredibly precise. The gps equipment is used to set up a grid of strings so that every, single stone is set in a perfect line at the perfect angle at the perfect height even along the slopes of the hillsides. Youre looking at the finished product and as you can see, the headstone alignment is close to perfect as possible in all directions. Reporter even the hand tools they are using are custom made for the job because everyone working here understands the gravity of the task.
