Chopper 5 showing two huge holes of the store on east capitol expressway. Yesterdays rain just too much for the roof. Kpix 5s len ramirez is outside the safeway where theres a new theory as to what happened. Reporter veronica, we heard from two separate sources today that big flat roof box stores like the safeway behind me can actually become like Swimming Pools on top if the water does not drain fast enough holding back thousands of gallons of water. There was certainly enough rain yesterday to contribute to Something Like that, although the official cause hasnt been determined yet. Safeway customers returned to the store today to see it for themselves. A catastrophe on aisle 3. And many were thinking the same thing. The roof could have collapsed on them. I would hope that they would check the conditions of the building before anybody would go in there, you know, like weekly, maybe monthly. I know we do it at our facility. Its pretty scary. Reporter this couple was in the store yesterday but left minutes before it happened. When you look at that, what do you think . Were lucky. Yes. Reporter the roof collapsed at about 4 00 after hours of heavy rain. Even these thick wood beams gave way and splintered. About 20 people were in the store at the time but after hearing a creaking and moaning sound from the roof, they got out of the way. We were told that all of the employees were accounted for and out of the building. We had one minor injury, a customer who had slipped and fallen trying to get out of the way of falling debris. Reporter sam coleman is the building manager for 13 pet food outlets including the one next door and says clogged storm drains may be to blame. Over a years time enough leaves and dirt and mud can plug those drains and cause it to become a Swimming Pool up there instead of draining. Reporter the San Jose Fire Department took this photo from an aerial ladder above the building. It shows not one but two separate holes. The second one gave way hours after the first. The building is now redtagged and although no official cause has been determined, the build up of water is strongly suspected. It could have been deferred maintenance. It could have been water. We dont know at this point what caused the collapse. Reporter so far no word back yet from safeway as to when this storm might reopen. But obviously, there is very major structural damage to this building. It will be many months before it can be reopened. That is if it doesnt have to be demolished.
