Police have barricades ready to deal with what is sure to be a zoo. At an actual zoo animal keepers in oakland are trying to keep the animals warm. These tortoises are not used to frigid nights. A lot of our animals at the zoo come from more tropical environments and need more heat than we have in the bay area. Reporter the zoo double checks the Heating Systems and added more heat lamps ahead of the cold. The tortoises have their own heated barn the barn usually stays above 70 degrees so its good temperatures for these guys. Reporter the dog days are long gone. As evidenced by luckys added layer. They are east coast transplants but they have changed their definition of whats cold. As soon as i got heremy blood thinned out. Reporter from animals to party animals. Happy new year reporter the bay area will face a night much colder than that. Compared to most of the bay area, these partiers are lucky. Temperatures on the embarcadero will only drop to the mid40s at worst. So the cold could impact the crowds down here at the embarcadero. Its still a little too early to tell. Throughout the newscast check the lower corner of your screen. Well be bringing your forecasted low temperatures for tonight. The cold comes as people are still cleaning up from our windstorm. For some it was a case of no power and no heat. In san jose one neighborhood was hit hard when a tree toppled over. It took out 8 power poles on silver creek road. Some neighbors tell us they took refuge in their cars turning on the heat. Others bundled up inside their homes. It was cold. So we just stayed warm inside the house and made sure the doors were closed and then we just dressed in layers. Good advice. Around the bay area tonight, power is still out for more than 3,000 people. You can see the fallout from the strong winds all over the bay area almost everywhere you look. In alameda, several eucalyptus trees toppled over onto the golf course there. These trees have shallow roots and are pretty top heavy. Not a good match for all that wind. In san jose a tree fell on first street. The downtown area was big enough to take up the whole sidewalk. It was chopped in pieces and hauled away. Overnight winds brought down two huge trees on El Camino Real in burlingame. Part of a tree fell on a house causing some minor damage there. A stretch of the road was closed all morning for the cleanup. In San Francisco they are counting 40 trees and limbs crashing down in the potrero hill neighborhood. This tree crashed on one empty car. Power was out when a san jose apartment went up in flames. It happened early this morning on seven trees boulevard. The occupant had lit several candles for light. Firefighters think a pet may have knocked one over setting the Christmas Tree on fire. Two people were displaced one treated for smoke inhalation. Kpix 5 reporter mark kelly tells us police are partnering up for their own protection in patrols tonight. Mark. Reporter ken, were seeing really ominous postings on social media tonight. They are encouraging people to go out and specifically target and kill comes on new years eve. Now, this is a nationwide threat still San Jose PoliceDepartment Taking this very seriously tonight. Tonight and tomorrow officers are doubling up. Two officers to every car. Pairing up like this is a first, an unprecedented move for this department, in order to keep officers safe. Even though there is no specific threat the Law Enforcement community understand there are people out there who want to hurt them. Its a dangerous job and only getting more dangerous. Two people in the car will not prevent things like what happened in new york but it is definitely a significant level and increased safety working in pairs. Although the threat is nationwide there was one tip that gang leaders in california prisons were orange straighting some of these assassinations on Police Officers within the state of california. Police say all types of crimes are down. New at 6 00, kpix 5s da lin is at a church that has a special reason to make note of that trend. Reporter liz, there were 80 of these crosses in front of st. Columbus Catholic Church each cross with the name of a person killed in oakland. The murder rate here though is actually the lowest in 14 years but youre in the going to find anybody celebrate the stat. Someone shot and killed alonzo mccolloch in east oakland last month. His sister carries his picture. Its hurtful. Cant sleep, cant think, cant eat. Reporter a lower crime rate brings little comfort for families who lost loved ones. Theres still too many. It shouldnt be as many people losing they lives to gun violence like it is. Reporter 80 murders this year down 8 from 2013. And well below the 127 in 2012. Robberies took an even bigger drop down by almost a third. We have not had an officer involved shooting now in 19 months. Probably as happy with that statistic as i am with the fact that that crime is is is consistently now on its way down. Were encouraged. Its almost a 40 reduction over two years so thats a good sign of progress. But i dont think we can take any joy in 80 murders for the year. Reporter the mayor and the police chief say having more officers this year allowed them to saturate the hot spots. They also credit their Community Partners and operation ceasefire. You heard of that african proverb it takes a village. And its taken a city to to, um, change the city. Police have made an arrest in a string of suspicious car fires in san jose. Three vehicles torched just last night near the campbell border. When police made an arrest, a few hours later the fire suddenly stopped. So far, they havent released a name but they say that suspect could be linked to as many as eight recent car fires in the area. People all over the bay area are rushing to the gas stations to make sure they start the new year on a full tank. People ran for cover as tents and canopies and other debris blew into the air. Four people suffered minor injuries. The National Weather service says it wasnt a tornado, instead they are calling it a cold dust devil that spun off from a passing storm. Also in Southern California, a strong windstorm hit Catalina Island killing two people. Several boats broke loose late last night. One of them crashed a Harbor Patrol officer. Another man was found floating in the water and died at the hospital. Snow and ice trapped drivers on mountain roads in San Bernardino county. As many as 200 cars had to be towed and 130 people rescued along highway 138. And they could see more snow here tonight. The business which supplied nearly onethird of all fresh oysters in california was required to close when its federal lease expired in 2012.
