Well be bringing you special reports throughout the coming year. Were monitoring some trouble on the evening commute tonight. A person was hit and killed on the caltrain tracks late this afternoon. It happened just south of the Mountain View station. That victim is said to be an adult who was under the highway 237 overpass. Emergency responders are on the scene. Caltrain is warning of significant delays through the evening commute. In the past hour a car fire snarling traffic on the bay bridge heading into San Francisco. We can see the smoke from our roof cam. We got word minutes ago that all lanes are now open again. But there is a residual backup. The smoke detectors didnt sound and the fire escapes did not work. Harrowing stories from survivors of that massive fire in San Franciscos Mission district last night. Tonight, authorities are investigating the tenants claims. This is whats left of that building at 22nd and mission. One person was killed in last nights fire. Five people were injured, including a firefighter. 18 apartments were damaged. And 54 people are without a place to live. Kpix 5s da lin joins us live. Da, many of these people are now just scared for their future in San Francisco. They have no where to go. Reporter they are, kent. I mean, they survived a fire. Now they have the tough task of finding a new apartment which may be impossible because many of these tenants are low income and they speak little to no english. In fact, some of them were crying because they know the fire burned them out of San Francisco. This woman stands and wipes her tears away. She has lost not only her home but likely her adopted hometown. She and her husband lived here for two decades and paid 1,000 for a twobedroom apartment. We have to wait for help. Reporter this couple lived here even longer. 40 years. Rent control kept their one bedroom apartment at 600 a month. How are you going to be able to afford another place . We dont know now i dont think about it. Reporter many if not all of the 54 tenants who lived on the third floor are low income. Some are staying with relatives. The red cross offered Motel Vouchers to others like Alessandro Gonzalez and his family. I dont know where were going to live. I really dont know. Reporter the 13yearold grabbed his dog, broke a window and climbed on to a fire escape when thick smoke started to fill his home. A cell phone video shows him holding his dog coming down the ladder. The video didnt capture what happened on the second floor. Alessandro dropped his dog into the hands of a Good Samaritan below and he would be next. Like, all right, just jump, just jump. And when i jumped, they actually caught me. So a cop caught me. Reporter the cop caught you . Yes. Reporter as youre jumping down . No, they caught me like in the air. Yeah. It was surprising. Reporter the fire forced them out of their homes. Now high rents are forcing them out of the city. Move out of San Francisco. Yes. Reporter that couple talked about moving to modesto. But even in modesto, 600 may not be able to get you a one bedroom apartment. The city of San Francisco is trying to help but at this point, ken, they dont have specific plans to help out these poor tenants. Yeah. Unlucky to have gone through that fire but lucky to have survived it. Thank you, da lin. The building had nearly two dozen businesses on the first and second floors. All were badly damaged. The Business Owners were allowed to go in today and get perishable goods from the inside. A possible case of ebola in northern california. Doctors are testing a patient to see if he has the disease at a hospital in sacramento. We have a report from Ucdavis Medical Center where this patient is being treated. Reporter thats right, veronica. All were told today is that a patient with symptoms consistent with the ebola infection is still being tested for that infection here at uc davis and a hospital Spokesman Says the hospital has everything under control. From a distance it looks to be business as usual at ucdavis medical. But up front, security is on guard Wearing Masks and inside, an ebola team is fitted with pressurized hazmat suits which we got our first glimpse of last year. Patients visiting family inside the hospital received a flyer saying a patient consistent with symptoms of ebola are being treated in isolation. Its the second ebola case. More people die of other things than ebola. Even though ebola is not a good thing. Reporter a nurse and representative for the California Nurses Association says there is a team of volunteer nurses working on the patient following strict cal osha standards. Ebola guidance calls for rigorous training, education and the highest levels of personnel protective equipment. Reporter the hospital canceled a scheduled press conference without any explanation. Earlier in the day, a spokesman emphasized, ucdavis is designated by the cdc as an ebola treatment center. Thats why the patient was transferred to ucdavis from mercy general in east sacramento. And neither hospital is saying whether he or she recently traveled to west africa at the center of the worst ebola epidemic on record. A doctor walked out of Court Earlier seemingly a free man. Allen martin reports. Reporter this is a case where two 70yearold men were in a road rage confrontation in marin. One driver followed the other driver to his house and he was shot. After charges were tossed out the District Attorney is trying to get a trial another way. It escalated from road rage to a shooting. Reporter in court, at a preliminary hearing earlier this month, the judge ruled there wasnt enough evidence to charge 71yearold dr. James simon with attempted voluntary manslaughter and assault with a gun. Now District Attorney is taking a second bite at the apple. He presented his case to a grand jury where the defense does not participate. And the grand jury has now indicted simon on the lesser charges of assault with a Deadly Weapon and negligent gundies charge. Kpix 5 legal analyst Melissa Griffincaen says its an unusual move for a d. A. Generally speaking, you would give it your best shot in one forum and then if it doesnt work you move on. You may be try to get a plea deal. But to actively go for a charge to get indictments from two different venues under four different charges, its actually not that common. Reporter attorneys for both sides arent talking before tomorrows arraignment of dr. Simon on the new charges. But after the earlier charges were dropped, the d. A. Was pretty clear about pursuing the case. I think it sends the wrong message to the community. I think that one of the things i have done since i have been d. A. , i have been extremely sensitive to the issue of gun violence. And i dont want that in our community. And we have to have some community standards. It was simply a preliminary hearing specifically to determine whether theres enough evidence to go to trial. The judge said no. A lot of them going fast probably faster than the 40 Miles Per Hour speed limit. A lot of neighbors said they wanted something in place like this temporary sign to discourage speeding here for a long time. Some of expressed doubt that it will fix the problem but the city says its worth a shot. The sign was put up today. Its just days after 24year old kiran pabla was hit and killed after two cars crashed here on yerba buena road. The two men were accused of street racing driving more than 70 Miles Per Hour at the time of the crash. And i said the speed limit here is 40 Miles Per Hour. Both men are facing felony vehicular manslaughter charges. The city wanted to get this temporary sign up as soon as possible. There are plans to get a permanent one in this spot. The city council overwhelmingly approving a plan to dramatically transform the old downtown. It includes housing, shops, offices and just about anything to generate more economic activity. Reporter reporter last december, healdsburgs Fire Department was busy helping people from their homes and saved pets. It was torrential downpour for several hours. Reporter but while they were helping everybody else, their home the fire station was flooded, too. We had several inches of water flowing through the station bringing in debris and who knows what is in that water. It was contaminated. Reporter carpet, flooring, and walls all being torn out. Black mold started to form. Every office every bunk room empties. Firefighters evacuated temporary construction pods their kitchen now in the garage.
