Right now students are sounding off about the San Francisco archbishops morality clause. They want the church to stay out of their teachers bedrooms. Kpix 5s andria borba with the backlash and some concerns coming from the students. Reporter ken, take a look behind me. These students are speaking out again for the second time. It may look very familiar. The signs in fact are recycled from the last protest. But what is different is that the archdiocese have hired security to keep students off of the square and away from the cathedral. Stanchions are put up to keep them out. We teach love in these schools, not hate. Reporter wearing tshirts students in the San Francisco archdiocese are voicing their disagreement with archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and the morality clause. It is ridiculous how he is trying to, um, represent the Catholic Church in a city of tolerance and a city of acceptance. Reporter the fight over student and teacher handbooks has been going on since february when students on Ash Wednesday with ashes on their foreheads first spoke out about the proposed policies. The language in the handbook would subject employees to strict rules in and out of the classroom. I think a lot my favorite teachers will lose their jobs or just leave because this is against their beliefs. Reporter among the chief complaints is that the archbishop is out of step not only with San Francisco but the vatican. The bishop is going backwards when the pope is going forwards with these type of issues. You know, in recent year, the pope has just been an enormous progressive, um, leader of the church when it came to very delicate issues that werent even talked about, you know . And now, um, when theres promise this archbishop is just sending us back. Reporter for his part the archbishop is rethinking the morality clauses and working to draft new handbooks but many are leery of his commitment to change. I dont think well rest until we see the entire handbook and its language thats very hurtful retracted all of it. Reporter now, last time on Ash Wednesday during the last speakout by these students, the archdiocese sent someone out to talk representing their point of view. We have not seen that thus far at this point. Live in San Francisco, andria borba, kpix 5. For its part the diocese has said it is clarifying the expectations of teachers however it doesnt mean that it will fire them if they are gay or dont follow the clauses. The judge in a legal case captivating the tech world says the plaintiffs financial troubles dont matter to the trial. Ellen pao is suing Kleiner Perkins saying she was discriminated against because she is a woman. Defense attorneys wanted to use her rocky financial situation to prove a motive behind the lawsuit. It could also be used to discredit paos abilities on the job. They would have been able to show that her personal finances were screwed up. For somebody who works in the financial industry, this certainly calls into question her competence generally and her competence at her job. Griffincaen says the defense may still try to argue that money is a motive even without using evidence of paos personal finances. The trial is expected to last three more weeks. The bay area may have another shot at the lucas films museum after all. A judge in chicago is letting a lawsuit blocking its construction move forward. Star wars creator george lucas has yet to say whether he will look at another location. Plans call for the museum to go along the shore of lake michigan. Chicago says it intends to press forward and get the museum built. Oakland is one of the cities thats made a pitch to george lucas if chicago falls through. San joses new mayor says he found the money to keep the citys libraries open. Kpix 5s len ramirez tells us it is thanks in part to an improving budget. Reporter in english or spanish, the library has been a jewel in the mostly latino washington neighborhood. I read books for fun and i get some books so i can do courses on my School Washington elementary. Reporter but for most or all of these childrens lives the library has only been open three or four days a week due to the worst budget crisis in san jose history. Its a tragedy. I mean, the whole purpose of having a library is being open. Reporter but the city is about to turn the page on that chapter. We needed to find a way to get our doors open. Reporter starting this summer, all 22 Branch Libraries will be open at least six days a week. Today, were talking about how we can ensure that every child has access to a book rather than a latch key after school. Reporter mayor sam liccardo is proposing in his new budget to restore Library Hours including saturdays for the First Time Since 2008. A voterapproved Library Parcel tax will pay most of the extra 1. 8 million it takes to keep the doors open. The general fund which has a surplus this year will take a 360,000 hit. We know we have a lot more work to do to ensure we have a stable fiscal future but this is just one sign of what we can do. Reporter the neighborhood around the biblio tech can has been affected by gangs and violence. The extra hours could keep more kids out of trouble. Wonderful. Its more time for reading for my children. So i love it. Reporter and give families a safe place to be together. Len ramirez, kpix 5. The proposal will most likely take effect in july after the mayors budget is approved by the city council. City of napa still picking up the pieces from last augusts earthquake. It hit the downtown particularly hard as buildings crumbled in that 6. 0 quake. But they werent the only ones hit hard. Some of the famous wineries also had significant damage. Kpix 5s ryan takeo tells us one of them is racing against the clock to repair a landmark. Ryan. Reporter thats right, ken. Were here at the Family Vineyards and they want their historic barn to be uprighted in time for crush this summer. There is a lot of work to do. Check out how its leaning. Those slanted doors in front give you a good perspective. Soon crews will work on straightening this leaning landmark but theyre on the clock. It didnt seem real. Still kind is kind of crazy. Reporter the earthquake shook napa in august it damaged this 129yearold barn at the Family Vineyards. The quake moved the Building Four feet to the west. The fact that it is Still Standing were incredibly blessed. Reporter the winely got green light interest engineers to repair the bar which they used as a tasting Room Office Space and wine making facilities. Step one is straightening the bent barn with hydraulic lifts. It is a meticulous process. Crews can only move the barn one inch a day. Its going to be a slow process but thats what were really excited about to get this thing vertical again. Reporter slow and meticulous arent words you want to hear if thats a looming deadline. The winery wants the exterior work done by late august and then the building will be retrofitted and rehabbed on the inside. All that work is expected to take a year or two. I think that they have done a great job but its also very sad considering how historic the building is. Reporter the winery says the damage has not impacted their business. Wine tasters sip and saver inside a decked out white tent making the best out of a tough situation in order to restore that signature building. I think they have done a great job with the situation at hand. Reporter she said she doesnt know how much the project will cost. I asked are we talking hundreds of thousands of dollars . Are we talking millions of dollars . She said, it will be up there. Live in napa, ryan takeo, kpix 5. A money mystery solved in the east bay.
