We may be in a new normal of very dry conditions and weve got to move quickly to ensure that we have the water to support our residents and support the Economic Growth thats so essential here in our valley. Reporter the governor is calling on lawmakers to ease environmental restrictions that would allow them to fast track a major recycling. It currently recycles up to 8 million gallons of water every day. Thats enough water in theory to supply 17,000 households. The expansion would quadruple their capacity allowing them to serve nearly 70,000 homes. Its not just regulations and red tape. Its also the ick family and toilet to tap recycling process. Once people are aware and understand the processes that are put in place they get much more comfortable in order to be able to drink this water. Reporter we got a tour of the facility this afternoon. The water is sent through a series of high tech filters that remove even microscopic contaminants and is zapped with uv light to sterilize it. It wouldnt be pumped directly in to the Drinking Water supply. It would seep slowly in to the underground aquifers. To demonstrate how safe the water is the mayor joined his fellow leaders in taking a big and public drink. Water tasted great. Tasted like the water out of my tap. Reporter a tough idea to swallow perhaps but the mayor says doing nothing could leave the valley high and very dry. The cost of that water would be anywhere from 1100 to 1500 an acre foot compared to 3,000 an acre foot for desalinization. A bill to put construction of two new water storage reservoirs was killed by a state Assembly Panel today. Dozens of farmers gathered outside the State Capitol urging lawmakers to pass it. That bill would have streamlined Environmental Review for a reservoir in the sacramento valley. In the last 30 minutes we heard from city officials in response to a day of clashes on the streets. Violent protests erupted over the death of a man who suffered a spinal injury while in police custody. 15 Police Officers have been injured. Two of 15 injured Police Officers are still in the hospital tonight. I was just like angry and really saddened. Reporter miriam pollack who heads the Stanford Israel Association got a text with photos of the hate graffiti. I was in the library on my phone trying to work on a paper and i started like crying a little in the library. Reporter no one with the university would talk on camera, but president John Hennessey wrote in a statement quote the university will not tolerate hate crimes and this incident will be fully investigated. This level of incivility has no place at stanford. Sae members told me off camera they didnt feel threatened by the graffiti on their house just disgusted and insulted. It happened this afternoon at 3rd street. The 20yearold was about to get off the t line in the bayview when another man calmly walked up to the victim and shot him in the head. Passengers watched in horror. As soon as the doors open, you hear pow pow pow guys jump off the train first then a whole bunch of people running falling over each other trying to get off the train. It was like a stampede. The suspect is still on the loose. The victim has lifethreatening injuries. Police have video from at least eight cameras onboard that train. A disturbing motive in the stabbing death of a 9yearold east bay boy. The suspect made chilling statements in a jailhouse interview. Not only to have a 9yearold killed but also to know that the parents of the suspected murderer had called authorities the day before and said something was mentally wrong with their teenage son. The authorities evaluated him but then released him. Reporter the suspected killer said he stand the boy while he lay sleeping. 18yearold William Schultz is behind bars for the murder. He tells the Contra Costa Times quote, i wanted to see what it was like to take a life before someone tried to take mine. Thats a detail i dont know if i could tell my kids. Tonight thousands of California College students are wondering whats next after their entire School System suddenly shut down. Corinthian colleges closed all 28 of its campuses less than two weeks after the feds fined the forprofit chain 30 million for misrepresentation. Today students got a brief form letter encouraging them to continue their education but offering no advice on how to do it. Its very devastating. And especially for a school of business that always wanted to embed professionalism in us and that is not professionalism at all. Students in california will qualify for federal loan forgiveness because their schools are closed, but many also owe tens of thousands of dollars in private loans.
