These out of control flames are threatening more than 2,000 homes, hotels and camp buildings near Yosemite National park. Authorities say the rim fire has grown to more than 25 square miles and is only 5 contained today. The amount of smoke pouring into the sky just shows the size of the massive fire. People are leaving behind their homes and campgrounds. A lot of memories, been up there 15, 18 years. So we just had a Family Reunion up there. The first weekend of august we had 60 people up there. We had a big Family Reunion. So far, two homes and five other buildings have burned and the fire has jumped highway 120 as it continues to grow. Heres a look at other fires. The american fire in Placer County burned more than 15,000 acres in the Tahoe National forest. 62 contained. And the swedes fire in butte county has scorched nearly 2500 acres. Firefighters expect to have that fully contained by tomorrow. And meteorologist Lawrence Karnow joins us with more on the fire danger heading closer to the bay area. We have been watching for lightning around the bay area. Our kpix 5 highdef Doppler Radar is looking for showers right now. So far, it remains quiet. Thats the good news. But were not out of the woods yet. Theres still a chance we could see some more thunderstorms erupting in the bay area. That cutoff low continues to spin off the coastline. Over the next 24 hours it will work its way northeast. That should take it across parts of the north bay. With that in mind, red flag warnings continuing in the north bay. You could see more dry lightning of course, you have some very dry grass. Well have more coming up in weather. In san jose, Police Arrested a burglary suspect after being shot by a Security Guard. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us the Security Guard caught the suspect redhanded. Reporter an offduty officer was on the way home around 1 30 this morning. He had just got off work when he confronted a suspect who was breaking into his fathers vehicle. Reporter San Jose Police say the Security Guard tried to catch the suspect but he ran away and got into a car nearby. That car drove towards the Security Guard almost hitting him. The guard said then a passenger got out of the car. He told officers he thought he saw the suspect reach for a weapon and fearing for his life, the guard shot his gun towards the suspect. The suspect got back inside the car and drove away. We located that vehicle a short distance away from where the original shooting occurred and the vehicle was unoccupied. That vehicle was reported stolen out of San Jose Police department. Reporter they were able to find the suspect with a gushed wound and took him to with a gunshot wound and took him to the local hospital, where he is expected to be okay. Police say he will go to the Santa Clara County jail on burglary charges after he recovers. We are looking for three additional suspects and hope the investigation will help us track those other three suspects down. Reporter the Security Guard was questioned this morning. No one he is was hurt. Cate caugiran, kpix 5. East Palo Alto Police are investigating a Fatal Shooting just after 10 00 last night on emmett way Near University avenue. The city shotspotter detection system picked up the gunshots and led officers to a man wounded in a parked car. The 19yearold man was rushed to a hospital where he died. So far, no word about any possible motive or suspect. Its been six weeks since anyone has heard or seen oakland toddler daphne webb. A billboard with the babys picture is up in front of the oakland coliseum. The electronic ad also has a tip hotline to call. Daphnes father says someone took her from his car at 79th and international boulevard in east oakland. Just this year, three bicyclists have been killed by moving vehicles here in San Francisco. Now one group is demanding the city do something about it. They say theres a safer way to share the road. There is a bike lane here on folsom right behind me. But it is very narrow and you can see some vehicles crossing into that because theres just not a lot of room between all of the cars and all of the bicycles that travel along this corridor. Bicyclists Say Something needs to be done. For many bicyclists, commuting to work in san franciscan be lifethreatening. Because we have streets that are very much designed for freewaylike conditions. She was a 24yearold woman with her whole life ahead of her. And, uhm, i really feel for that. In just seven months people have been hit and killed while bicycling all by larger vehicles. Reporter thats why the Bicycle Coalition is Gathering Signatures to pressure City Government to make folsom street safer for cyclists using measures now in place on market street, like a physical barrier between bikes and cars and painting the lane green. The city has not shown the urgency it should for safety on south of market street. It takes time and money to get this work done. Reporter metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman paul rose. Even green paint would take a planning process and outreach process and an implementation process. Reporter that would take years. There have been plans on the books for more than a decade to improve folsom street. Reporter true. But those plans were put on hold for five years by a lawsuit from a person who didnt like them. We can start looking at it now and exploring those options and getting something done. Reporter in the meantime, its every cyclist for himself. If the bike hits a car, its a little dent. If the car hits the bike, its major problems. Reporter some measures could be part of a Pilot Program which might start in a year or so. But longterm fixes wouldnt go into effect until about 2017. Californias top leader will not be at the opening of the new bay bridge span. Governor brown has other plans. He will be attending his wifes Family Reunion in michigan during the labor day weekend. Were now just 7 days away from the bridge closure. Crews will scramble to finish up construction over the five days the bridge will be closed starting next wednesday, august 28th, until september 3rd. The roadbed will be realigned to make it straighter and then theres the road striping and reflectors to add along with electronic information boards and, of course, those exit signs. And while the bridge is closed, bart will be rolling 24 hours a day. Service will be limited on the overnight trains and not all stations will be open.
