It happened on el dorado avenue at 10 p. M. It just missed me. Reporter he had just walked past it with his dog. Heard the crackling, turned around, thought it was thunder, saw the transformer blow and saw everything kind of come down. Reporter including a treehouse that once belonged to the 10yearold who lives in the house. I was just shocked because that tree was leaning down. It wasnt falling. For kids, this is real exciting. For the parents, its a little different. Reporter George Horton is a family friend. Its pretty amazing, you know, that a big tree like that could come down in a neighborhood like this . It was lucky that it fell this ways in some ways and hit cars instead of hitting their house. Reporter no one feels luckier than the man who walked by this tree seconds after it fell. I was having a rough day but now im counting my blessings. That was anne makovec reporting. Tsunami warnings have been called off following yesterdays deadly earthquake in chile. The massive quake was centered just off the northern coast, 8. 2 and triggered landslides and a tsunami warning. At least six people were killed. Authorities in the south American Country say damage was surprisingly light. Chile is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. Several smaller quakes hit the country in recent weeks and seismologists say the threat of a larger one is always possible. Expect about another 8. 8, 8. 9 earthquake here sometime in the future. But the key point is that this magnitude 8. 2 is not the large earthquake that we were expecting. During the chaos, 300 inmates escaped from a womens prison. Chiles president declared a state of emergency and deployed hundreds of police and soldiers to prevent looting. From yesterdays quake in chile to recent earthquakes that jolted california, its a stark reminder that the next big quake could come from any of a dozen seismic faults that crisscross our state. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran in the newsroom with what scientists are doing to prepare. Reporter experts from the usgs say theres a lot to learn from the chile quake and we could expect the big one sooner than we think. Fridays was the result of a coastal plate jamming into a continental plate, a subduction zone. Thats important to note because we have a similar setting here in the bay area. This quake is the latest in a string of many, the most recent ones we have heard, of popping up in Southern California about a 5. 1 magnitude. Experts dont believe all these are related but the trend of quakes should be good meaning the types of quakes we see in Southern California are considered normal. Were here living in earthquake country in the bay area and in Southern California. And its a reminder that we need to be ready. We need to be prepared. We need to do what we can to make it so the structures we spend time in are safer. Reporter he says chile was lucky the quake happened 50 miles offshore. We might not be so lucky in the bay area. Even though we cant predict earthquakes, i did asked him given the information we have, is there any indication we can expect a big one here . He said most earthquakes scientists would say if one big one came tomorrow, they wouldnt be surprised. Cate caugiran, kpix 5. With the threat of massive tsunamis following these earthquakes, scientists are doing everything they can to develop an Early Warning system. As John Blackstone reports, the question isnt if a tsunami is going to happen, its when and how bad it will be. Reporter there was no warning ten years ago when the indian ocean tsunami killed some 230,000 people. By 2011, when a devastating tsunami struck japan, a Warning System was in place but it came too late for too many. Anywhere you are close to the water, you have to be concerned. Reporter in seattle, he leads a team of scientists at the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration. They are developing a faster more accurate way to warn communities of approaching tsunamis. Tsunami is going to happen, no question about it. What we want to make sure is that we do everything we can to reduce the impact. Reporter their project has taken on a sense of urgency because of the cascade yeah fault system about 100 miles offshore running from Northern California to vancouver. Scientists now believe its capable of a magnitude 9 earthquake. On the San Andreas Fault were waiting for the big one. On the cascadia fault were waiting for the really big one. Thats a very good way to put it. Reporter this is what floats on the surface . Yes. This is the buoy just like the one off the coast of oregon. Reporter greg helped design the revolutionary sensor that deploys with a buoy then sinks to sit near the fault on the ocean floor. We have less than 20 minutes in order to detect a signal and send the alarms off to the communities under threat. Thats what were steering towards with this new technology. Reporter when an earthquake strikes, the sensor can tell if it triggers a tsunami and sends a signal to the buoy which transmits it to a satellite then back to the tsunami warning center. Researchers will be able to calculate how high the wall of water will be and how far it could travel. With the new systems now we are hoping to buy time that can get the warning out quickly and to evacuate those communities under threat. Two prototypes of the new sensors are now in the ocean off the coast of oregon. During an earthquake, earlier this month they worked as planned. Scientists say its an expensive task but one that will save lives and property. Snowboarder who was missing is alive and well now.
