We ran fire service ran over 360 calls. The effort to clean up and reopen schools and businesses. Good afternoon everyone. I am frank mall co. People up in napa, vallejo and American Canyon picking up the pieces after sundays big conviction. Michelle griego is live where moments ago we got an update on the cleanup. Michelle. Reporter frank, as you said, a News Conference was held moments ago. Crews have been working around the clock to try to assess the damage to help with the waters issues and also the power lines. But through all of this we do have a piece of good news. Nicholas dylan of napa was seriously injured in yesterdays earthquake, and doctors at uc davis performed a ninehour surgery to repair his pelvis. Now, his family says he is in stable condition right now. So that is certainly an upgrade. This is a picture of the chimney that actually fell on dylan. The 13yearold underwent surgery to treat pelvic fractures. But as we said, he is doing much better now. A News Conference was just held a short time ago talking about the response efforts of several agencies and what theyre going to be doing later on today. With regard to my office who is conducting the inspections, we have had a large number of volunteers and state oes has sent us inspectors to go out into the field and canvas the remaining areas that hadnt been removed yesterday. We had 30 volunteers plus our own staff canvasing in the field those areas. So they are looking to identify damaged buildings and appropriately tag them and free up buildings that may appear to have damage but are okay to enter and occupy. Reporter again, that was from a News Conference just a short time ago here in napa. Heres what we know so far. We know a total of 49 buildings have been red tagged. And being red tagged, this means they are unsafe for anyone to go in. And city Officials Say the number of red tagged buildings is likely to increase. They have increased just from yesterday by 16 buildings. The fire chief says his department, other crews from the surrounding region, they responded to about 50 fires since that earthquake and they were also there were also 92 calls related to possible gas leaks. Pg e is looking into that and they plan to continue searching for leaks. Now, currently we know that about 600 properties are without water due to about 90 separate water leaks. But thats a huge difference from yesterday. And as repairs proceed many residents are likely to experience a low water pressure. Now, earlier today we did see some crews helping clean up in downtown napa. A lot of people in orange tshirts from home depot were helping clean up some of the glass that was on the sidewalks there. A lot of people were coming just to help out. Even neighbors and residents weve seen come out. And earlier this morning we had a lot of tourists come by and take pictures of a lot of the damage. A lot of the streets here in downtown napa are closed because of this damage. Now the day after the earthquake a community, theyre really trying to get back on their feet. But resources are slim. Ann joins us now from a target in napa. Reporter yeah. And just within the past hour and a half this target store here behind me was red tagged. So they are now moving in this fencing. The store is going to be closed indefinitely. It is in part because of that large crack you see there in the facade. Really, the entire city is trying to get back to normal in fits and starts. Flashes through your head at once. Reporter at the moment the quake struck it was safety first and cleaning up the mess second. This is what classrooms looked like today at irene snow school. Classes canceled. Computers knocked over. Thank goodness it happened in the middle of the night. If people would have been here a lot more damage, you know, could have happened. Reporter theyre checking for damage all over town. The napa sanitation district is sending robotic cameras into the sewer lines looking for damage. Everything around town and were looking good so far. But certainly in the day. Reporter we found another crew checking the integrity of holes in the ground that pg e uses for hydraulic testing of its pipes. Lets hope we dont have any more aftershocks. Reporter a common prayer around napa today. My fifth earthquake. This is the worst. Reporter thats because of the sheer volume of items shaken about. Kate mcmillian showed us pictures of the damage in her home. It this was ive never seen so much glass in my whole life. I have no glass left. Reporter while the parking lot looks like a normal monday at bellaire plaza, most of the stores are closed today for cleanup and inspection as workers wait and wonder whats next. The day after this quake is a new day as well. We are going to look at this as an opportunity to do some purging, to do some good cleaning and were having all hands on deck to make sure were ready for tomorrow. Reporter back out live at the target store in bellaire plaza, the fence is going up. I feel bad for the workers who came here. They came from stores all around the bay area to clean up. They thought they were going to ib able to reopen tomorrow. Instead, everybody was simply told to go home. Live in napa, ann macovic. And we talked to a couple of City Employees this morning who didnt even know that they had the day off. But they went to the building and were turned quickly away because the building was deemed unsafe. Now, right behind me you can see one of these 49 buildings that has been red tagged. This is the dm restaurant right on the corner of 2nd and brown. You can see all of that debris there on the sidewalk. This building actually, we were told, had just recently been retrofitted. But you can see all of the damage that the building has sustained. No word yet on the estimate on the dollar amount of how much this damage has cost the city of napa. They are still working on that. And tomorrow, frank, the city is saying tomorrow begins the recovery process. Right now they still have inspectors going through making sure they know all of the damage is assessed. Got to be safe. Okay. Michelle griego live in napa. Nice job, michelle. We will check in in just a moment. Coming up in the meantime, its been 25 years since the loma preate a earthquake. That was a 6. 9. How this weekendsearthquake compares a quarter century later. Its not as bad as napa, but vallejo is a mess. We have a live report after the break. I am meteorologist Lawrence Carter in the kpix weather center. The largest earthquake in a quarter of a century. Could we soon see something bigger . We will talk about that and your Weather Forecast coming up next. ,,,,,,,, closed. Welcome back. Today many schools near the epicenter . The north bay are closed. They include all the schools in the Napa Valley Unified School district. Each campus is being inspected for damage today. Within the next hour the district will decide which schools with open for students. Justinsienna is also closed. We are hearing more stories of Community Coming together to help those in need. Michelle, you have a story about how one restaurant is not letting the damage bring them counsel. Tell us about that. Sure. And the community really is coming it together, frank. The restaurant on main street in downtown napa was shaken up pretty hard during yesterdays earthquake. Take a look at the Surveillance Video from inside. You can see in this video the chandelier shaking violently and also the bottles on the table falling over and all of a sudden the video just cuts out and thats because the power went out. Now, one of the reasons people showed up and worked so hard is because the owner really wanted to open the restaurant early today. He wanted to offer free meals to the First Responders in the morning and to volunteers out here helping out. He opened the doors to the restaurant. Its good to say at 10 30 this morning he plans on staying open until 9 00 tonight to keep all of those hard working people fed. So that is great news. Now, another city besides napa that saw a lot of damage, of course, is vallejo. Thats where kit is this afternoon. Kit. Reporter hi, michelle. We are here at the corner of fern and tennessee. If you look down this street you got a bunch of homes with busted up chimneys. If you look here on tennessee a lot of businesses that are boarded up because of broken windows in front. The home behind us here has been red tagged because of falling brick and broken tiles making it unsafe to go inside. At last count 41 businesses an homes have been damaged here in vallejo and that number is very likely to go up. Day two after the big quake in vallejo and its all about picking up the pieces. Very, very big pieces. This building on the 400 block of georgia street was one of the most heavily damaged in the city. They are thinking about a ton of bricks came loose from the building next door from a height of about 40 to 45 feet. At that distance with all that weight coming down with these thick wooden beams and roof, they didnt stand a chance. We have a new place for a skylight that came down from two stories. Reporter he was using the empty building as storage. It was scheduled for earthquake retrofitting and he says Mother Nature just beat him to it. This is a big building to be retrofitted. Well be glad when its done and over and well be searching for tenants. Reporter at dozens of older commercial buildings around town the shaking broke plenty of plate glass windows. At neukom and sons locksmith the force knocked over a 3,500 pound safe. Its going to take a cherry picker to pick it up off the ground. Reporter what does to tell you about how strong this quake was . Pretty strong. It woke me up out of bed. My dvd rack fell on top of me when i was sleeping. Reporter and masonry contractors are going to be busy as the quake damage destroyed 90 of the chimneys on the block. She decided the whole thing will have to go. Living in an old home, we wouldnt have it any other way. Its okay. It could have been a whole lot worse. Reporter all righty. We are back here live at that locksmithing shop that you saw the fallen safe that toppled over. They managed to get it back up with the help of a large tow truck here. They are working to get it back into place. It is very heavy. Gives you some sense of how strong this earthquake was out here. The county says that they have sent over ten engineers i should say ten inspectors and five engineers to help out with all the inspections. Again that likely number of damaged homes probably will go up by the end of the day. Also they have a press conference scheduled for 3 p. M. Today to update the media on the cleanup and the efforts that they are trying to sort of get vallejo back in one piece here. Michelle, back to you. All right. Kit, thank you so much. And again the damage reported in vallejo is estimated to be at a little more than 5 million. Again, that number could quickly change as details come in later this week. Frank, i have to tell you i have lived in the bay area for two and a half years now. This is the first earthquake i have felt. It woke me up. My daughter screamed. Butk luckily everyone and everything in the house was okay. Hopefully, your first and your last, michelle. Nice job in napa. We will touch base in short order. Time for weather now. Are we out of the woods yet . How many aftershocks . 60 the napa area. Its just a reminder we live in earthquake country. You are right. We havent seen major earthquake in a quarter of a century and thats somewhat unusual. We have got numerous faults around the bay area. The most famous the san andreas. This earthquake happened at least near the west napa fault. We havent determined exactly. Nonetheless, that is where all the activity is coming now. You can see the last 24 hours we have had numerous earthquakes of magnitude 1 or greater. Sop of these up to 3. 6. It looks like the possibility of some more. In fact, really about a 5 to 10 chance of a magnitude 6 plus within the next six days. Its 36 chance of a magnitude 5 plus in the next six days. So were not done just yet. Of course, all those damaged buildings could easily come down if we see another quake of that strength. All right. Around the bay area right now low clouds and fog just beginning to break up outside. The temperatures in the 60s. And also the 70s. As we head around the bay today we will note those clouds peeling back towards the coastline. Returning to low clouds and fog overnight tonight. Then mostly sunny and some warmer weather on the way. High pressure going to be building in as that ridge builds in. We are going to get more sunshine. Getting hot in the valleys. 94 fresno today. 86 sacramento. Around the ba 70s and 80s inland. 60s and 70s inside the bay and 60s on the coastline. Sun set 7 49. Sunrise tomorrow 6 35. Looking out over the next few days looks like the temperature is going to heat up into the 90s. Partly cloudy skies. Tropical moisture paying a visit to the bay area this next weekend. That could be a bit on the interesting side, too. The rest of the week looks all right, monday through friday. Yeah, not too bad. Thank you. The earthquake bringing back harsh memories of what happened 25 years ago. Roberta gonzalez joins us live in our newsroom. Roberta, you remember the loma prieta earthquake well. So how was the response in napa and the cleanup efforts . I do remember reporting on the loma prieta earthquake in 1989. I was employed by another television station and i remember reporting on that for four straight days, frank, before i ever got to go back home again. Cleanup efforts and the comparisons, it seemed like we were cleaning up for over a year with loma prieta. And let me explain why. First off, take a look at these two comparison maps. You see, first of all, the napa map. A 6. 0 earthquake. And youll notice a little bit how it is centralized in the yellow and the red colors there. Those are the people that were affected by this earthquake or felt the shakes and the rumbles. But meanwhile you compare that with the 6. 9 loma prieta earthquake. That was so much more far reaching. You see the colors all the way to the south. One buckled. We had substantial damage in san francisco. We had landslides in the summit area, the santa cruz mountains. Many people dont remember that we had a nondestructive tsunami in monterey bay. Now, as far as comparisons are concerned, again there is no comparison. The loma prieta earthquake affected many more people right here in the bay area. Similarities are, though, because the loma prieta earthquake did occur during the 1989 world series, we had less people on the roadways at a very high volume time. Typically that was the evening rush. We had people at home watching the game. And, by the way, loma prieta earthquake was the first nationally televised earthquake across the country due to that world series game. And in napa at 3 20 in the morning nobody wassen the road. So both earthquakes had people out on the roads, which is a good thing and did save a lot of lives. Things that are better today, definitely communication. I remember trying to get some information for my assignment desk at my television station. That was limited due to our cellphones at that time. They were so big, we had to carry them around in suitcases at that time. Once your battery went on you it was gone. We didnt have car chargers and we werent able to plug them in at different places. Plus, there was no power. With loma prieta nothing was working. You couldnt go into convenience stores. People were backed up at the gas stations. Also, atm machines werent working. So you always wanted to have a little bit of cash on standby after that experience there, frank. All right. Roberta, we have come a long way. Thanks for sharing.
