But time and money are proving to big roadblocks to the plan that wont come soon enough. Anne makovec joins us live in the city. Did the weather have something to do with this . I bet it did. Reporter it did, but really, the trees make up themselves, these ficus trees. Im at one of the scenes where a ficus tree fell down affecting muni lines which are about to reopen. But look at the healthy trees that remain. They are very top heavy. All it takes is a little water for part ever o the trees to be sheered off by their own weight. They are not falling down, but simply falling apart. This tree fell at the corner of 23 and potrero street hitting a man. He was take ton the hospital with head injuries. The trees brought down muni lines. Crews had to turn a muni around with the help of a truck. This tree is a ficus tree. One of four that fell in the city today. Over the past few years, we have been concerned with the aging ficus trees. Reporter a 40foot ficus split in half and fell on top of several stars in steiner and eddy street. Another ficus tree came crashing down on lumbard. All of the trees were aging, installed by city decades ago. They are top heavy nonnative trees. I guess we are looking at the best way to replace the aging ones. Reporter but it will probably take years before they are gone. Removing a ficus tree costs between 500 and 1,500 and there are about 200 of them left standing right now. Speaking of the rain, how much of it did we see today . Lets check in with lawrence kamow for those numbers. It turned out to be an impressive storm system. We are still seeing a couple of sprinkles outside, most of the heavy rain has come to an end, but yeah, very impressive. We saw almost an inch of rain in the santa cruz mountains, a third . Scientists are relieved their Landing Craft is safe on the surface of a comet, but it is just standing on two of its three legs. Charlie daggot has the latest from germany. Reporter this is the first image ever taken from a comet surface. It landed successfully, but not without a hitch. We apparently bounced twice. There was one bigger jump and a smaller one, about six minutes. Now we are on the surface. Reporter scientists think the lander may have touched down in the shadow of a cliff which could cause problems for the solar panels that charge the batteries. They lost contact with the probe which was expected because the comet rotates once every 12 hours. If the Landing Craft is on the other side, scientists cant communicate with it. But optimism here remains high after the European Space agency made history. It was the culmination of a 20 year dream. It takes dedication bordering on the obsessive. One of the agencys top personnel matt taylor has the mission tattooed on his leg. It is the excitement of these operational challenges. It is the journey we have made. Reporter soontists determined it is sitting on a rocky surface, but they are hoping it can take samples of the object that will reveal the secrets of life on earth. Scientists are hoping the drill can be used to dig out some samples without pushing the lander back into outer space. We are learning more about what led to a Deadly Police shooting in concord. It started near sun valley mall last night as deputies pursued a man in a stolen car. He dumped the car and ran to the Willows Shopping Center and tried to carjack two other vehicles unsuccessfully, he was successful on a third attempt. Police shot him when he used the car to ram a police cruiser. A worker at the shopping scepter describes the chaos. My dad came inside and said get down, get down. I didnt know what to do. Our whole store just went into panic. Police have not identified the man, but say he was a felon with multiple convictions. The shooting is under investigation. Bail was reduced for the man known as bad elmo. The judge denied the request of letting him out, but reduced his bail by 100,000. Sandler was arrested for criminal threats. He works as a street performer dressed as elmo. Well, the Fire Commission is evaluating chief joanne hayeswhites Job Performance in a closed session tonight. Demetrius shelton even presented First Lady Michelle Obama a copy of the publication. At the workshop, the students break into groups and describe the freedoms described in the booklet. Shelton gets people to lead the talks including his friend since college. He is a leader.
