Right now, officials in london are checking the structural stability of a theater after a roof partially collapsed during a play. Dozens of people were injured, at least 7 seriously. Reporter michelle, witnesses say it was chaos and panic as large hunks of plaster, wooden beams and dust rained down on the audience 45 minutes into the play. Reporter the area outside this iconic london theater was blocked off friday morning one day after part of the ceiling collapsed during a show. Overnight inspectors worked to try and figure out what may have caused thursdays accident. It would appear there was no warning, that it was just a sudden collapse of plaster and some things from the roof of the auditorium, which was at some considerable height. Reporter theatergoers left the auditorium covered. Authorities say nearly 80 people were injured some with head wounds but everyone made it out of londons Apollo Theater alive. More than 700 people had gathered to watch a popular play. Witnesses say just before the chaos an actor yelled, watch out a loud bang. I didnt think it was an explosion. And the ceiling came down. A lot of dust, chandelier, wood and all that sort of stuff. We just looked up and the whole ceiling was like slow motion came down. Reporter within minutes of the incident, First Responders arrived and rushed people to the hospital. Police say it doesnt look like the collapse was an act of foul play or terrorism. Happening today a lawyer representing an oakland teenager on life support will ask a judge to keep her alive until christmas. Childrens hospital in oakland declared 13yearold jahi mcmath braindead after a tonsillectomy last week. The familys Attorney Says that he plans to request an injunction to prevent the hospital from taking mcmath off life support. Its a different situation in texas where a pregnant woman is also on life support. Fort worth doctors suspect the womans suffered a blockage in a main lung artery more than two weeks ago. She is being kept alive because a state law there prohibits hospitals from taking pregnant women off life support. The womans husband says she would not have wanted this. We talked about it. We are both paramedics. We have seen things out in the field. And you know, we both knew that we didnt want to be on life support. She is 18 weeks along in her pregnancy. The baby has a normal heartbeat and doctors are considering taking the baby to full term. Tired and terrified, thats how Oakland Animal Services describes 11 pit bulls rescued from the home in east oakland. Officials say the dogs were found without food and water when they went to the home on an unrelated case. They say the dogs were being trained for fighting but their owner interviewed only on kpix 5 denies that. I tried to breed the dogs. There wasnt no fight. The person that was running this operation ruined these dogs. The Alameda County d. A. s office is investigating and Animal Services is trying to find homes for the dogs that can be rehabilitated some shoppers are using cash at target after finding out customers have been hacked. Hackers hit targets credit card system between november 27 and december 15. They stole credit card information for as many as 40 million customers. We found a number of victims in the bay area. Some charged, for instance, 54 on amys credit card at a store in los angeles. I went on my b. Of a. Account and it said ralphs los angeles. And i was like it clicked and i was oh. The cards that were hacked were used after target stores. Those used to shop on the companys website were not compromised. If you report fraudulent activity within two days on a debit card youre still liable for 50 in charges. If you report it within 60 days, then youre liable for up to 500. After that, you probably will be responsible for everything. Congresswoman Jackie Speier wants an investigation. One of the things i absolutely think needs to take place is an oversight hearing to determine why it took so long for target to identify that there had been a breach. Speier said she would like to see legislation that would better protect debit card customers. The ntsb is recommending sweeping changes following the deaths of two workers on the bart tracks in october. These arent just for bart but for all transit agencies. The ntsb is recommending trains be equipped with a Monitoring System called positive train control. It also suggests rail workers have a warning device called a shunt that they could attach to the tracks. Barts board says it welcomes the recommendations. A coroners report last week said the two men killed on the bart tracks did not follow safety rules. Those rules required at least one person to serve as a lookout. A San Francisco woman charged with causing a crash that killed a teenager says she doesnt remember what happened. 58yearold jennie zhu pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving yesterday. She is the one with the blue scarf. Police say she was driving 80 miles an hour near gough and pine in september. She rearended a minivan killing 16yearold kevin san of lincoln high school. Zhu is free on bail and faces 7 years in prison if convicted. Former bay area football star kwame harris is expected to be sentenced today in San Mateo County court. Harris was convicted of misdemeanor charges for a fight with a boyfriend outside a menlo park restaurant last year. The fight was over soy sauce and accusations the boyfriend stole harris underwear. Harris played for stanford, the 49ers and the raiders. And Unified School District agreed to pay 8 million to settle a teacher abuse case. Special ed. Four men broke down the door got inside the house on armor way on wednesday. The home owner hid in the closet until the suspects found her. They point the gun at me and he took my jewelry. The woman doesnt want her identity revealed out of fear. She says its the second time thieves broke into her house while she was inside back in february. 30,000 worth of jewelry and electronics were taken. Thats when the family put up cameras that captured the break in. Check this video from los altos hills. You can see three men looking around and one shatters a window. The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office says that once inside the men ransacked a bedroom and stole a jewelry box. And thanks to that video, investigators have these images of the suspects. They havent quite pinned down the ages but if you recognize them or have any information about the burglary, call the santa clara Sheriffs Office. The surveillance cameras do a good job when it cops to catching suspects. Kiet do shows us how you can start video patrolling your property. Lawmakers are a new plan to make stolen smartphones worthless. State senator mark leno and George Gascon are introducing a building that would require such devices to have kill switch technology. If a phone is stolen, it would be useless. The state legislature will take up the bill next month. Youre probably accustomed to dialing 415 to reach people in San Francisco or marin county but that area code is being phased out for new numbers. California regulators just approved 628 to be given to new numbers starting in just over a year. But existing numbers wont change. New this morning, the senate has now approved a comprehensive defense bill. Senators held a final vote late last night. The bill aims to crackdown on Sexual Assault in the military and add protections for victims. Overall, the bill provides 552 billion to the regular military budget and 80 billion for overseas war operations and now, it heads to the president s desk. Today in south sudan two u. N. Peacekeepers were killed as fighting continues to escalate. President obama is now deploying a military contingent to south sudan. 5 military personnel will 45 military personnel will go to the capital to protect the embassy and american soldiers. South sudan split off from sudan in 2011. Ethnic violence has killed hundreds of people in recent weeks. Monday is the deadline to buy Health Insurance to get coverage by january 1. But some rules are being relaxed. As Tara Mergener reports, those who lost their existing coverage for not meeting new standards are getting a break. Reporter in a lastminute change to Affordable Care act, people whose current Insurance Plan was canceled may not face a penalty if they dont have coverage in the new year. In a letter to senate democrats, health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced people struggling to find a replacement plan may be exempt from getting coverage. They can also buy an Insurance Plan called catastrophic coverage, a barebones policy which protects you if you are hospitalized or suffer a serious illness. Sebelius wrote, the premium for these plans which are otherwise only available to individuals under 30 years of age are on average about 20 lower than premiums for other plans available in the marketplace. The policy shift immediately came under fire. The Group Representing the Insurance Industry said in a statement, this latest rule change could cause significant instability in the marketplace and lead to further confusion and disruption for consumers. That practice is called lane splitting and it is legal in california. In fact, this is the only state in the country where it is legal. But earlier this year, for the first time, chp put out a list of guidelines saying theres a right and a wrong way for motorcyclists to do it. Most notably, they shouldnt lane split any faster than 10 Miles Per Hour over the speed of traffic.
