Now, we know that yesterday volunteers spent a few hours prepping the feast for the christmas meal. Theres going to be 500 volunteers setting the holiday here helping others and glide says its like this every holiday. They are never in short supply for those wanting to help. Its december 26 and every other day of the year that they could use your help. Also later this morning there are going to be Football Players from the washington huskies lending a helping hand. The Union City Fire department has a Christmas Toy drive every year collecting hundreds of gifts for needy families but this week the department scrambled for more presents after a fire destroyed a home. Kpix 5s brian webb shows how the Community Stepped up. Reporter a union city house goes up in flames destroying much of the home and all of the Christmas Gifts with only two days to go. Rushed back in the house, and i said, donna, call the Fire Department. Ill go next door and see if anybody is in the house. Reporter 16 people were staying in the home for the holidays, many of them children. And out of the ashes, an idea. A lastminute entry to the toy drive to include the family forced from their home by the fire. Especially when we have a traumatic event like a house fire kids dont understand sometimes what happens so we are just trying to put some smiles on their faces for christmas. Reporter so the Alameda CountyFire Department went to work buying up more gifts like these and spreading the word to a Community Already excited to help. People like kenneths family who pulled gifts out of their own piles to give to a family they dont even know. Just helping out. Thats the biggest thing and paying it forward always trying to do the right thing and being there when people need you the most. Reporter everyone in the family survived the fire and will spend christmas together and now have presents to open too. Firefighters couldnt save their home, but they did save christmas. Today San Francisco police and firefighters will deliver thousands of toys to needy kids. The toys all donated to the 13th annual Christmas Toy drive at lefty odouls in union square. More than 10,000 toys donated yesterday. Firefighters have already distributed thousands of them to kid here in San Francisco. A judge issued a ruling in the battle over a 13yearold girl who was declared brain dead after tonsil surgery. Superior court judge grio announced yesterday Childrens Hospital oakland can remove jahi mcmath from a ventilator as soon as monday. The girls family has been fighting to keep her on the ventilator. The judge made that decision after hearing from two doctors one from the hospital and a courtappointed independent expert. Both testified jahi mcmaths body is alive only because of that breathing machine. I mean, with the decision, its heartbreaking to hear that of course. But our faith is still strong.
