KPIX KPIX 5 News Early Edition February 11, 2014

Across the dumbarton bridge. Well check the bridges coming up. A full kcbs traffic report a few minutes away. 4 31. Its about the last thing you want to hear when youre flying, your pilot cant find the airport. Kpix 5s andria borba reports, san jose is one of the most confusing airports in the country. Reporter its clear pilots know the words to dionne warwicks famous tune, do you know the way to san jose . But according to a new Associated Press report, the confusion begins once they reach san jose. Sitting just 10 miles apart, left as the crow flies are Mineta International and Moffett Field set on headings 10 degrees different nearly indistinguishable on paper, on the left mineta, on the right moffett. Runways look pretty close in alignment. Reporter the ap report says over the years, there have been six close calls where a plane bound for mineta nearly touched down at moffett. The landings were all waved off just in time. Aviation expert retired captain dick beads tells kpix 5 problems come from inexperience and hurrying. When things happen quick, you blow it sometimes. Hey, theres the runway, lets land. Reporter the best way to tell mineta and moffett apart of the giant world war ii airship hangars at the former military base. Another problems is when storms blow into the south bay and wind forces pilots to flip the direction they typically land from south to north to north to south cases like this, its easier to mistake the runways. Reporter andria borba, kpix 5. This is a picture of a flight making an Emergency Landing yesterday. Something was wrong with the Navigation System and instead of a risking the flight to hawaii, the pilot returned to the airport as a precaution. Passengers took another plane. The weekend rain helped fill reservoirs in marin county, but some of the water caused problems in downtown mill valley. Some businesses on miller avenue are waterlogged and a number of businesses were flooded. This has been a problem foreyears. It rained more than a foot on the mountains and hills around mill valley and then came rushing down here to the low part of the city. This storm drain and another one down the street simply couldnt handle what was coming in. Water was bubbling up out of the grates and even flowed out of sinks and toilets. Mill valley says it could build a culvert but that would take years and be very expensive. The rain in marin county was a help but didnt come close to wiping out the drought. As kpix 5s Elizabeth Cook reports, water rationing is still a strong possibility. Reporter in the south bay we could have used more. In the north bay, the story was much better. The effect was pretty amazing. We increased our Storage Capacity of stored water by almost 20 over the weekend. Reporter but the story is far from over. Even with all that rain, its still entirely possible that voluntary water cutbacks will become mandatory. On april1, the marin municipal Water District will take stock of its water supply on april 1. If our storage is below the threshold, then mandatory rationing will be put in effect. Reporter thats the scenario that has residents talking and even scheming. Well, some people are saying we have to rack our water bill up to save so ill knock 25 off that which defeats the purpose that were all trying to save water. So using a bunch of water now will just give you a bigger water bill and maybe make you the least liked person on the block. Reporter truth, the district is still trying to figure out exactly how mandatory restrictions would work and how much water residents would be expected to use. What we do know is that any water saved now will not hurt a customer in setting their baseline or benchmark water use. Reporter so while the rainy weekend was nice, it didnt deliver any longterm answers. We try not to use much water and im worried how are we going to cut 25 . Reporter Elizabeth Cook, kpix 5. Lets hope we get more rain so folks dont have to worry. The rain left behind clouds this morning. In fact, a lot of fog out there. If you are stepping outside, that will be the main weather concern i think the next couple nights. All that patchy, dense fog. We are seeing visibilities dropping to less than a quarter mile across much of the bay area. So the fog is still just forming. So be careful. In some spots its clear, bay bridge not bad. Temperatures running generally in the 40s and the 50s this afternoon. Well sneak in sunshine and clouds, temperatures in 50s and 60s in the warmest spots. Lets check the roads with elizabeth. We can barely see any cars right now across the Golden Gate Bridge so dense fog obviously limiting visibility this morning coming out of marin county into San Francisco. So im assuming they are doing lane changes right about now, but we cant see to know for sure because of the fog. This is the time they usually do it. San mateo bridge traffic nice out of hayward no delay in either direction. And once again, even though the National Weather service issued their dense fog advisory, chp drives the freeways around the bay area and issues their own dense fog advisories and they issued one just now for the dumbarton bridge. Thats your latest kcbs traffic. Happening today a ceremony will be held to rename the western span of the bay bridge of the bay bridge after willie brown. The ceremony will go on despite a lawsuit against it. The suit says the state legislature bypassed policies to fast track the renaming and didnt allow for adequate public input. A judge is scheduled to hear the case next month. As for the new eastern span of the bay bridge, caltrans is still trying to explain why its leaking. As kpix 5s phil matier reports, the Weekend Storms helped experts figure out where the water is coming from. Reporter we are seeing some water coming down on all lanes but isolated to this particular location. Reporter the problem appears to be leaks in where the guardrails connect to the span or possibly the wiring conduits to the bridge lights. Whatever the case, water is now dripping down into the heart of the suspense span. Something were going to address. Reporter the fear is that while the leaks are not an immediate problem, ongoing wetness could corrode bolts so they have to come up with a solution. And how much is that solution going to cost . We havent figured that out yet. But its another one of those things that, you know, as we experience more wind, more rain, were going to learn things about this bridge. They dont know exactly where its coming in, how quick its going to take to resolve. But i cant imagine the water is not going to be left standing there. Even if it takes more than one winter season to button this up, the water is still going to get, you know, mopped out and pumped out before it can do any damage. Reporter phil matier, kpix 5. No word how long it will take to fix or the cost. A large portion of a roof collapsed on an abandoned warehouse in North San Jose at 5 p. M. Yesterday at nicora avenue.
