Well learn more today about the status of that small spacecraft thats just landed on a comet. Don champion reports there are some worries though about how well anchored the lander is on the comet. Reporter we could get more amazing photos like this today from a robotic spacecraft that landed on a comet more than 300 million miles away from earth. There were cheers at the European Space agencys Mission Control wednesday after the craft named philae landed. It was not perfect, though. The dishwashersized lander might have bounced after harpoons and a booster rocket system failed. The big question now is simply, is it stable on the surface . They have gotten science data from most of the instruments so theyre working. Reporter its an important question because the comet has very weak gravity. Even if philae functions are limited or lost, the mission is not over. Most of the data is expected to come from rosetta, the unmanned mothership that dropped the lander. Scientists are studying the icy and dusty comet hoping it can unlock questions about the origin of the solar system. Asteroids and comes are about the only places where we can go where we find that the information remains intact and pristine from that early history of time. Reporter the comet is about the size of new yorks central park. If philae stays on it, it had carry out 64 hours worth of scientific observation. Don champion for cbs news, new york. The comet travels up to 84,000 miles an hour. The spacecraft that dropped philae had been chasing it for 10 years and finally connected yesterday. New this morning a water main break sent thousands of gallons of water 70 to 80 feet into the sky for three hours in walnut creek. Police say a loose cap caused the break. The area between southbound california boulevard and olympic boulevard was closed off until about 2 30 this morning. Crews were able to shut off the water and fix the cap. Kind of pretty. But what a mess. Im wondering why my rain gauge out there was showing about 3 feet of rain. In walnut creek. It didnt seem to make sense. Now i get it. But there was rain, as well. We do have some showers out there that are continuing to pick up right now. If you are headed out the door, it is going to be very slick out on the roads. In fact, seeing a little fog out there, too. Look at this, we have the showers making their way into the state right now. And more to come. Were focusing all our attention right now on the bay bridge. Fortunately it is going against the commute direction where this accident is. I should take that back. Its not even an accident. Its a stalled big rig. But its leaking fuel into the roadway so now theres a clean up to do. And a number of emergency crews are on the scene. They are actually blocking the numbers one and two lanes. And we are seeing some slight delays already this morning on eastbound 80 as you approach the skyway. So again, this is getting on to the lower deck of the bay bridge leaving San Francisco. But this gives you some idea right now how slick it is and you can see all these raindrops on the camera lens. This is the other direction, the commute direction at the bay bridge toll plaza. So far it is pretty clear actually maybe some very small delays in a few of the cash lanes. But as lawrence mentioned this morning give yourself some extra time, take it slow out there. We saw an earlier accident. It was a bad wreck on eastbound 580 in livermore. All lanes are now back open. They reopened lanes about a halfhour ago. Right now, just in the commute direction you can see everything is flowing okay out of livermore. And another wet one if you are crossing the golden gate bridge. But traffic is super light so far out of san rafael into sausalito continuing into San Francisco. People in san jose finally got a chancelearn more about the drone purchased by their Police Department a year ago. Residents packing the first public presentation to make sure they were heard. Opinions ran the gamut. Some people thought the drone was the First Step Towards surveillance state. Others supported the drone as long as there are some strict guidelines on when it can be used. It starts off right now as a great thing which i do support in the way that the sjpd wants to use it. My worry is, you know, as technology progresses, when will it stop and when is it that you guys are going to be do all sorts of things. San joses Police Department says they plan to use the drone to help the bomb squad and in certain situations involving hostage ordeals and searchand rescue operations. Another hearing is december 6. They found the car now investigators are trying to track down the driver who struck and killed a teenager during a highspeed chase in san leandro. It started tuesday evening near the bay fair mall when the driver refused to pull over for Alameda County sheriffs deputies. At one point the driver veered into oncoming traffic on east 14th street near ashland avenue. We are southbound east 14th. Looks like that car struck a pedestrian at ashland. We need code 3 medical here. Now, as kpix 5s joe vazquez reports, its a traumatic situation for the community including law enforcement. Reporter they lit candles, shed tears, stood together in horror and disbelief. A large crowd of family and friends gathered here on this sidewalk memorial to say good bye to a 14yearold boy killed by a hitandrun driver. She had a whole lot of things that he had a whole lot of things that he wanted to achieve in life ahead of him. Reporter 14yearold ivan cruz had the green light as he scooted across ashland in the crosswalk. At the same time, sheriffs deputies were chasing a man who was driving erratically on the wrong side of the road. As a wrongway driver sped down ashland, he hit ivan killing him. The suspect got away. Alameda county sheriffs deputies say they found the car. They are now checking it over for forensic evidence. Tonight, ivans mother and two sisters were among the hundreds grieving for him. She says she doesnt want to talk about it right now. But his cousin says ivans mother is devastated. What do you want people to know about ivan . He was the fun little loving boy. He was always smiling. Beautiful little boy ever. And i just hope that they catch whoever did this. Dan has parents and siblings made the announcement during a News Conference yesterday. 26yearold stanford grad had not been seen since halloween. The ferry captain found the body tuesday morning. Investigators have not yet officially identified the remains. But family members say the body clothing and personal effects have them convinced it was their son. We as a family are all shocked and deeply distressed over our loss. I would encourage those of you watching at home to turn to your loved ones and hug them and tell them that you love them. Relatives say they doubt ha committed suicide. They say he didnt leave a note. He had a doctors appointment scheduled for the day after he disappeared. Rodney hundreds gathered outside Richmond City hall to remember rodney frazier. Police think he was shot in a case of mistaken identity friday. His mother is one of those calling for the end to violence. The past week has been a disappointment because weve made real strides in reducing gun violence here in richmond. I hope people see this here and know, dont try to, um, retaliate. Frazier was killed in front of his home in North Richmond when 20 shots were fired at him. There are no suspects at this time. Reporter after years of inaction, both houses of congress are set to vote on a key tenet of the republican agenda, completion of the keystone xl pipeline. It will move oil from canada to the gulf coast. Supporters promise more Oil Independence in the u. S. Democrats have long fought the pipeline because of concerns over its impact on the environment. Any action on the controversial measure is unlikely to get passed president obama. I think its fair to say that our dim view of these kinds of proposals has not changed. The accident is eastbound 80 at the skyway, a stalled big rig but it has a punctured fuel tank and so now theres fuel on the roads so they are doing an emergency cleanup right now. We know emergency crews, fire crews, everyone is on scene blocking two left lanes and they just closed the skyway to get on the freeway. You may need to access the freeway at 4th instead. Still no real estimated time when they are supposed to clear this. Tow crews will be on the scene in the next 45 minutes. This could be out there for a while. It is countercommute. In the commute direction everything still looks okay heading into the city from the east bay. Heres a live look at a very rainy toll plaza and slick roadway. Its the Biggest Issue right now.
