It is a lot calmer here and that the kohls store in colma, you can see there are about three dozen cars in the parking lot right now. A lot of people are already finished with their shopping. Americans were expected to spend 2. 5 billion yesterday alone. Shoppers came to the outlets in livermore in droves. There were lines everywhere even to park. The stores were open all night. Expectations are high. 4 increase in sales this year the biggest jump in the last three years. If someone kicks off the Holiday Shopping season earlier and the consumers move that direction, you as the competing retailer are going to get a smaller share of the wallet. There are four southbound lanes over at the Golden Gate Bridge. You cant see them. Its so foggy out there. But southbound traffic is still flowing well. Aside from the accident in the livermore area, chp reporting no other major crashes. The south 101 commute leaving southern marin is fine. San mateo bridge is fine. Dense fog for the carquinez bridge and benicia bridge. I drove down 280 to get into work from the woodside area. Very thick fog also down to zero visibility there. As we can see the hidef doppler is picking up echoes that are just off of eureka not quite to Mendocino County right now but it will all move onshore tonight. First in the north bay, spread south over the rest of the bay area. It will be wet beginning tonight, staying that way from now right through wednesday with periods of rain possible and sometimes its going to really come down and then sometimes well get a break. But it will be persistently wet with a chance each day between now and wednesday. So rain returning to the bay area this weekend. By tonight, its going to get closer to the shoreline. That will bring rain into the bay area. So have the umbrella handy all the way from now through at least midweek. In terms of rain totals its going to be good as you will see in a moment but lets give you an idea of the timing. By 6 00 this evening, you can see some scattered light showers in advance of the main front still hanging offshore. Then it all powers south overnight. Steady stream of rain up in the north bay. By tomorrow morning, some fairly decent cells not only in the north bay but beginning to sag south and then saturday looks wet. You can see the nature of this activity calls for just scattered showers from time to time. This rolls it ahead until sunday at 5 00 and theres still a chance of showers in the bay area. In terms of accumulations, more than 3 in the north bay. The east bay about 1. 5. Up to 1. 5 on the peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountains as much as the mountains in the north bay. So we are getting decent totals for this just through sunday night. So high temperatures today we begin to cool it down a little bit especially in the north bay where san rafael hits only 58 degrees. Here in the city were up to 60. 66 in san jose. And 63 at fairfield. Extended forecast the all important forecast, partly cloudy skies in the bay area today more sun in the south than in the north and chance of rain comes into the north bay tonight and spreads south over the rest of the bay area. Saturday looks wet. Sunday cloudy and rain. Monday same story. Another shot of rain tuesday lingering through wednesday. Kpix 5s don ford on what the discovery means for sea life. Reporter scientists are a little closer to understanding why starfish are dying by the millions along the west coast. And now it has a name. Wasting disease occurring from southern alaska almost all the way down through baja, california. Reporter that he a long way. Thats a long way. Thats a big chunk of coastline. Reporter according to Research Findings published in the National Academy of sciences magazine, the main culprit may be a special marine virus that affects only starfish. Causes their arms to fall off and they eventually melt. Its kind of a horrifying death. Reporter reduced to rotting mush. Scientists say just learning this much about the problem is a big stem. Identifying this virus has been very difficult. Yes, its been described as a needle in a haystack because Scientists Say in one drop of sea water, there can be 10 million viruses. And wasting disease may have been around a lot longer than first believed. Lots of Unanswered Questions some samples from nearly 100 years ago show the virus. But it wasnt deadly then. Today, it is found in see anemones and urchins but has no effect on them. All of these things that are sort of icons of the ocean, you go to the tide pools and they see all these critters and they are all there together. Reporter but its the starfish now dying off and right now, scientists are nowhere closer to figuring out how to stop it. Still a lot of work that needs to be done.
