But it will be persistently wet with a chance each day between now and wednesday. So rain returning to the bay area this weekend. You can see the nature of this activity calls for just scattered showers from time to time. This rolls it ahead until sunday at 5 00 and theres still a chance of showers in the bay area. In terms of accumulations, more than 3 in the north bay. The east bay about 1. 5. Up to 1. 5 on the peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountains as much as the mountains in the north bay. Reporter according to Research Findings published in the National Academy of sciences magazine, the main culprit may be a special marine virus that affects only starfish. Causes their arms to fall off and they eventually melt. Its kind of a horrifying death. Reporter reduced to rotting mush. Scientists say just learning this much about the problem is a big stem. Identifying this virus has been very difficult. Yes, its been described as a needle in a haystack because Scientists Say in one drop of sea water, there can be 10 million viruses. And wasting disease may have been around a lot longer than first believed. Lots of Unanswered Questions some samples from nearly 100 years ago show the virus. But it wasnt deadly then. Today, it is found in see anemones and urchins but has no effect on them. All of these things that are sort of icons of the ocean, you go to the tide pools and they see all these critters and they are all there together.
