Good thing for him and everybody else that he crashed on a golf course. Right after he took off from the Santa Monica Airport yesterday afternoon, the plane could be seen flying low as he tried to get back to the airport after engine trouble. The 72yearold ford placed a distress call after the plane lost power. He ended up clipping a few trees and landing hard on the Penmar Golf Course before paramedics got there. Golfers on the course rushed to help, including an orthopedic surgeon. A passenger in the rear seat slumped over, um, in distress belted in. I could smell fuel. We wanted to get him out safely and with the fuel leaking out, i motioned to somebody else at the golf course to put dirt on the fuel so it wouldnt combust and i just wanted to get him out safely so it wouldnt erupt into a fire. His son released this statement at the hospital dad is okay, battered but okay, he is every bit the man you would think he is. He is an incredibly strong man. The manager of San Francisco park and rec is in the hospital after a tree fell over him and crushed him. It happened on tuesday. As Robert Watkins was supervising crews trimming and cutting trees at hilltop park. This is file foot average watkins. He has a broken ankle as well as head and back injuries. Thats a look at traffic. Bad weather in the east has forced airlines to cancel another 80 flights across the country today. Just yesterday, we saw what snow and ice can do. A delta flight from atlanta landed hard at Laguardia Airport in the middle of a snowstorm. Well, it skidded to the left hitting an embankment and then a chainlink fence. It stopped just short of plunging into icy waters. 125 passengers and five crew were on board. The wheels did not grab. They didnt take. And immediately, you heard the spinning. We felt like we skidded probably for 20 seconds. I grabbed the seat in front of me started to pray. Making matters worse the evacuation slides did not deploy. So passengers had to slide down a damaged wing. 6 people were injured but none seriously. This morning, cranes lifted the plane from where it had come to a stop. We have learned that Oakland Police have a suspect in the shooting death of a 14 yearold boy. Kpix 5s Christin Ayers has exclusive details on the man that police think may have pulled the trigger. Reporter leaf washed over the parents of devon ellis the 14yearold shot to death in oakland last Weekend Hours after oaklands police chief made this announcement. The Oakland Police department has identified a person of interest, um, that is currently in custody for an offense outside of the city of oakland. Um, we are following up on that. Reporter kpix 5 has learned exclusively that Oakland Police had been investigating whether this man is connected to dayvons murder. He was arrested in hayward sunday after being pulled over and firing a gun at hayward police. They pulled him over because he had the same car description. And when they pulled him over, he shot at the police. Reporter a source with the Oakland Police department confirmed what dayvons father told us, although the chief wouldnt talk about whether this man is the person of interest who is in custody. Were not prepared to release any more information beyond that. Reporter dayvons parents applauded Oakland Police for identifying a person of interest quickly although his father says the news is bittersweet. Love of my life, my only son. It hurts. If you know anything about what happened, Oakland Police would like to hear from you. A spike in burglaries in los altos has people upset. And last night, the police chief apologized at a community meeting. One man told people about his wife actually walking in on burglars. Police have increased patrols and are asking everyone to keep their eyes open for any suspicious activity. And it may be paying off. Police arrested two men on monday after a neighbor called nine one. Two years ago, los altos had 79 burglaries. Last year, that number jumped to 118. And now the city is on pace for an even bigger increase in breakins. A projection of 216 for this year. Were learning this morning that lots of californians are buying handguns. The department of justice says that more than half a million were sold last year. Thats the most since 1993. It seems people are buying worried that stricter gun laws are coming up which will make it harder to get one. There may be more guns out there but the state says gun related deaths are at their lowest level in more than 20 years and new this morning, a threeweekold baby has died of the whooping cough. This happened just over the altamont in san joaquin county. The county had not recorded any whooping cough deaths in the latest outbreak until tuesday when the infant died. Its a wakeup call for mothers that if they are pregnant get vaccinated. The whooping cough also known as pertussis is a bacterial intext that spreads very easily by sneezing or coughing. Happening today, ucsanta cruz will be open for classes this morning after the campus was shut down yesterday because of this. Dozens of protestors blocked the main entrances part of a National Movement that wants to call attention to tuition hikes. It looks like youre clear as well on 680 both directions near that portion. No delays out of marin county. An easy ride into San Francisco. About 14, 15 minutes away from 580 on that southbound side of 101. In fact, our bay area bridges are all checking in problem free. San mateo bridge nice in both directions 880 between 101, 13 minutes on the westbound side. Also the bay bridge clear, cars in the cash lanes a nice ride toward the toll plaza on the westbound side. Everything is clear through the maze. Caldecott tunnel commute is nice this morning clear into San Francisco. Now, just a heads up this weekend there is an event the Chinese New Year parade is taking place tomorrow so there are going to be some street closures around market and kearney in San Francisco. So that begins about 5 00. Most of the closures start around 4 00 especially near the staging area. So again the streets that are affected market, kearney, post, howell and sutter so do plan for that over the weekend again thats on saturday. So you can take bart. Thats a great choice for this weekend if you are headed to the parade. Or you can use bart this morning because everything is on time systemwide.
