It sounded different. I have heard gunshots before and this one sounded much different. There was just one of the it was like a loud bang. Reporter opd detectives dont know why brian a Data Scientist from florida who was in oakland for a year was targeted. Were still trying to determine what led up to the shooting. Were not ruling anything out. Reporter the motive may not have been robbery. His wallet was still on him when emergency crews arrived. This whole neighborhood is shaken up because there are families. Theres not a lot of traffic here. People ride their bikes. Kids throw balls in the street and stuff like that. Reporter the piece of the case may be surveillance video. They are checking door to door in the neighborhood to see if anyone may have caught the crime or aftermath on camera. A neighborhood email described a man in a gray sweatshirt nearby before the shooting but the video is gone. You may have captured something helpful for our investigators to solve this crime. San jose state has hired a chief diversity officer to ensure theres no more racial bullying. She will run the office. The school saw the need for a chief diversity officer because in 2013 a black students suite mates allegedly tried to clamp a bike lock around his neck. When it happened there were protests on the campus. In february of this year the three suite mates were convicted of misdemeanor battery according to the mercury news. The victim has filed a claim and is seeking 5 million from the university and his former suite mates. History could be made today. So far traffic pretty light no delays if you are working your way towards the toll plaza. Its clear on the upper deck into San Francisco. Most of the bay area bridges no problem. Back to you guys. In San Francisco a van fatally hits a homeless man and keeps moving now an uber customer says his driver played a part hailing the van until tragedy struck. Kpix 5s mark kelly shares the unnerving ride reporter jason west told the chronicle that leading up to the fatal hitandrun was a frightening road rage incident for 15 minutes on San Franciscos busy streets. West says his uber driver was chasing a van at high speed on rainsoaked streets even running reds following a fender bender near union square. It didnt take long for the alleged road rage to turn fatal. It was here in the tenderloin at eleven worth and ellis where the accident happened but west tells the chronicle that he had no idea anyone was killed. But a 56yearold homeless man did die. According to the chronicle, the uber driver denied wests account of that night saying he never went over the speed limit. The decision to let women compete for all military combat positions is irreversible. Reporter the morgan hill unified School District made the discovery because thats where they plan to build an elementary school, in the contaminated soil a pesticide now banned in most of the world and linked to Many Health Problems including cancer and parkinsons. The toxin is called yeldrin and its no longer used in the country. Its very toxic and it was used many years ago when it was a Cherry Orchard so its something that were, you know, trying it figure out how to get rid of if its even possible. Reporter kimberly is the School Spokesman and says they are waiting on a state agency to tell them how to clean the soil so they can start designing the school thats expected to serve 600 students. Our kids go to junior high in san jose along with a lot of other morgan hill kids. Reporter he says morgan hill needs more schools but will leave the yardwork across the street to the professionals. The port of San Francisco fears the citys seawall wont do well in an earthquake. Port officials are pushing for Major Repairs say the three mile waterfront would shift significantly in a big quake. They say it would cause cracks in the embarcadero that could tamper with munis train lines and possibly traffic lanes for cars. The port claims the best fix is a process called jet grouting. It would be arthroscopic versus openheart surgery, mixing cement with the soil basically takes a loose sand and it makes it a sandstone. The cement injections make the ground far more stable should a quake strike. The port estimate these repairs will cost between 2 and 3 billion. Shocking video shows the moments a sinkhole swallowed a road in madera. The 12 by 15 section collapsed monday. The hole is 20 feet deep. Cause is unknown. Recent storms may be to blame. Wind advisory overnight has been canceled. Things quiet across the span. No delays on 101 into foster city. The bay area is playing a part in a project to explore deep space. The new plan was thought up by a billionaire and its being developed with help from Stephen Hawking, Mark Zuckerberg and nasa. Betty yu shows us reporter its being called the most ambition search for alien life in history and some of the worlds brightest minds including facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg are on the board. Its a 100 million project to literally reach the stars. The model im holding is the first version. Reporter its the size of a stamp, weighs less than an ounce and can camry cameras and will operate like a sail with wind power from lasers on earth. Space crafted of the near future. We can do more than just gaze at the stars. We can actually reach them. Reporter billionaire russian investor yuri milner and Stephen Hawking announced plans to send thousands of these tiny space probes to our nearest star system, the alpha centauri. The project is called breakthrough starshot. I believe what makes us you neek is transcending our limits. After the spacecraft are perfected and launched, they should reach the star system within 20 years.
