So what to expect over the next couple of days, well, we are going to see some significant rainfall off and on. Today scattered showers continuing through the day. At the bay bridge toll plaza another high wind advisory and there are some raindrops out there so drive slowly across the span of all the bridges this morning. Carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you about 19 minutes. Expect no delays through the toll plaza. Those metering lights should turn on around 5 30. So in an hour. Heres a look at the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city. Another high wind advisory from 880 to 101. Thats a quick 14minute drive and if you are in woodside again highway 84 between grandview drive and highway 35 still under oneway Traffic Control from a couple storms ago but im sure this rain now is not helping the situation. Chp blocked it off last night because of all the downed trees. More than 2 dozen drivers were stuck on the other side of highway 160 as crews tried to remove that debris. The bridge officially reopened at 1 a. M. In the Santa Cruz Mountains drivers had rocks and mudslides to deal with. Kpix 5s betty yu has more on the cleanup efforts there. Reporter steady heavy rain hammered highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains for hours. High winds also made driving treacherous. Flooding and downed trees and power lines made for tricky commutes at about a dozen hot spots in the county. Check out this massive rock and mudslide two miles south of highway 35. A huge chunk of the cliff along upper xiane road is gone and a handful of trees uprooted. There was no easy way around it for drivers who had extra long detours. The wet weather also didnt help crews with repairs and cleanup from last weeks storms. It was not much better for People Living near the East Foothills in san jose. This giant tree was no match for mother nature. It came crashing down on Mount Hamilton road and took down power lines. Caltrans crews sawed it up and removed it. Betty yu, kpix 5. Chp will be keeping an eye on hillsides on highway 17 throughout the storms. In oakland, powerful winds knocked down this massive tree near 15th and Martin Luther king, jr. Way. We are told the tree uprooted from the sidewalk and landed on a crosswalk. No word yet when the road will reopen. In San Francisco, heavy rain caused minor flooding on highway 101. Our photographer joseph cousins drove right through this massive puddle in the southbound lanes near the 280 split. And snow is backing up in the sierra making for tough drives along interstate 80. A chp officer had to intervene to help this big rig get through an icy incline by donner lake. The area has already seen more than a foot of new snow. Thats why chains are currently required on the interstates. And Property Owners in the area have been told to keep a very careful eye on their propane tanks. Reporter propane tanks and natural gas lines and valves can be damaged by deep snowpack resulting in gas leaks and if that happens then the house slowly fills up with propane and then when your refrigerator turns on or the appliance turns on or an alarm or something, it creates a spark and you can have an explosion. Reporter in 2010, this serene Lake Neighborhood to evacuate because of a gas leak and now Placer County officials are hoping residents in the sierra are aware of the serious safety concerns. A lot of work to do for these residents. If you see your propane tanks buried under snow dont try to take care of it on your own but get experts out here. Overnight, lgbtq activists threw a did dance party. They danced outside the home of Vice President elect mike pence in chevy chase, maryland. Their party was a protest against antilgbt laws supported by the Vice President elect. The group called work for peace organized the dance. It formed after the mass shooting at a gay club in orlando. Dance has historically been a really powerful symbol for the lgbt community. Dance is a form of healing. It allows us to tap into our bodies and use our bodies through movement to promote a movement. Dance has said they plan to leave behind some rainbow colored items to make sure that their message of love sticks. And today, massive protests are planned in response to president elect Donald Trumps inauguration including at several bay area schools. At each site teachers, students and supporters plan to hold walkouts before the first bell rings. The protests start in the 7 a. M. Hour. Some of the schools include Galileo High School in San Francisco, bret harte in oakland and other schools. Police are bracing for protests in the bay area ahead of friday. One of the largest expected to start at 10 a. M. Tomorrow. Nearly 3,000 people expected to form a human chain across the golden gate bridge. Both officers faces were bloodied. The interim police chief says his officers did the right thing. There have been some allegations that the officers were not assaulted in this incident. It could have been de escalated instead of the continued aggravation. Reporter we showed the video to a group thats camping out at San Francisco city hall protesting police use of force. Right now, police are trying to track down the suspect who sexually assaulted a developmentally disabled person. It happened last night in rohnert park. Police say the suspect and a woman approached the victim at a Shopping Center on rohnert park expressway. The suspect ended up following the victim home. Thats where the assault reportedly happened. So far, no arrests have been made and if you have any information, call police. All right. A lot of people are getting an upclose look at Spacexs Falcon 9 rocket after a successful launch this weekend. Its now docked at the port of los angeles. On saturday, it took off from Vandenburg Air force base and sent 10 small satellites into space. Minutes later, it landed safely on a barge in the pacific ocean. Now people from all across the country are coming to see it. I grew up during the early years of the space age and this is beyond anything i could have ever imagined. It will stay at the port of los angeles until its sent back to spacexs headquarters to be set up for another launch. The company ultimately hopes that reusing rockets will make it less expensive to go to space. Today nasa will take its next step toward putting people on mars. Six crew members will go inside this dome on a remote Hawaii Volcano to study the longterm effects of a potential trip to the red planet. They will spend 8 months together in the Research Facility with no physical contact with any other human beings. They will wear spacesuits when outside the compound and even experience a 20minute delay in communications to simulate the time it takes for voice calls to reach earth from mars. Thats cool. And then towards the northern portion of San Francisco right over the city in fact well likely be seeing heavy rain right here at the station not too long. Now, east bay for now youre dry but, of course, all of these cells will be heading your way so be mindful of that as you head out the door here over the next hour or so. This is the first of three storms heading our way. Storm number 1 right now out in the pacific, it will bring with it more heavy rain and high winds over the next couple of days.
