After the home goes up in flames. Im kenny choi. Michelle griego is off. We are getting the first look at the suspect identified as gerald villabay area i dont. Kiet do reports. Reporter a man from san jose has a long criminal history. Crews on scene are waiting for the ashes of this burnedout home to cool down before they go and recover his body. Firefighters found his body in a closet. Somewhere within the charred walls of this burnedout home is the body of one of the most violent suspects fremont has seen in recent memory. To know we had a criminal in our city carrying a loaded firearm and ready to immediately start shooting at officers is just not acceptable. Reporter the cause of death is unclear. Last night investigators tracked the suspect down to the home on roberts after. They fired tear gas in the home when he refused to surrender. Tear gas may have started the fire. It smoldered all night on the porch. It was too dangerous for firefighters to spray water at a distance. By sunrise the house burst into flames in a flashover. Its unlikely survivable. Reporter police made the call to put the flames out. When they went inside they found the suspect but its not clear if they found a firearm nearby. He was given many opportunities to come out during that negotiation. He refused to do so. Reporter this ended with a car stop in fremont yesterday afternoon the suspect rammed the officers patrol car and got into a battle. This video was shot as the officer went to the hospital in Critical Condition, the suspect looked injured. Im lucky that that guy didnt come into the restaurant shooting. Reporter ten minutes later he shot another police officer, that officer in stable condition. Both officers are in Regional Medical center in san jose where a steady stream of officers has been showing up. The suspect died in the fire. Do you think he got what he deserved . I dont know. Who am i to judge . Reporter that officer who was in Critical Condition described as a hard working officer, a really nice guy brandnew to the force. Buy on the department now for just about a been on the department now for just a year. The next 48 hours are critical for that officer. Kiet do, kpix 5. We have Team Coverage today. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is at the Trauma Center in san jose where the injured officers are being treated. Reporter as kiet said they are getting a lot of visits right now from their coofficers with the Fremont Police department. There are several Fremont Police department cars here in the hospitals parking lot. One was critically injured. Thats the person who initially tried to make the traffic stop. The other officer, a detective, he was shot apparently as he was trying to locate that suspect about 10 minutes later. We got an update on their conditions from a Police Spokesman earlier this morning. I dont have a estimated time for when they will be released. Even the veteran officer who sustained two gunshot wounds he has internal injuries so he could be, you know, out for some period of time. He still has progress to make. While he is stable, the injuries are still very serious. Reporter that officer she is referring to is a 10year veteran of the Fremont Police department. All the detective bureau, investigations are stopped, people are working, you know, 16hour days for an exhaustive police force. This is devastating.
