Hazier than others. Now, lets bring in darren peck. We use the sensors to see it. This is a view over the last few hours when you watch it. It will get towards sunset and that inversion becomes clear. You can see how the air is getting trapped in here. The weird set up is that the smoke is getting corraled. It is getting pull into the bay. Look at what happened over the last two hours, look at it, deeper shades of red, you see the pattern all right in through the golden gate within the last hour it shaded back into the unhealthy category. It is the benefit of using the lowcost sensor. There is a lot more of them than the official epa sensors they are higher grade, calibrated better, looked at by technicians regularly. Most of them are set up by people in their backyard. They are a great tool to see patterns like this. We are not out of this. When you look at what happened here is the smoke going back to noon today. See the deeper shades off of the coast. Watch the breeze. It is going to settle. Tomorrow. It is still here. We still have another air quality tomorrow. And saturday it is going to be better. Saturday the atmosphere will come back and we will pull in a stronger westerly flow that will blow all of the smoke out of here. Look at the improvement coming our way. Sets us up for the next issue. Monday, clear air. Actually has a chance of rain on it for some of us. Showing you the first rainmaker of fall, it will not get everybody, north bay area, a chance. We have seen the videos over and over again. This year alone 15,000 are here from the police. Under a new program that is what the police are using bait cars to try to catch thieves. Frustration certainly is growing. Some saying no matter what the city tries nothing seems to be working. Jose martinez heard from a manager of a shoe store that is worried that the break ins are driving his business away. Reporter the errorring occurring crimes, denny has seen it all. People breaking into cars right outside of his shoe store. He has been the manager of the store since 1997. For us it is frustrating t. Has been going on for years and i see no changes. Reporter he sent a letter to a public hearing discussing how to combat the car break in problem organized by dean preston. The city has made no noticeable progress. Does not mean no progress. And in terms of reduction in car break ins and folks are frustrated. And visitors to our city are not only losing money and property but often left traumatized and with a very bad experience but denny tells me he wants more than conversations he says that this issue is not just impacting individuals. It is dammed if you do, dammed if you dont. Carry bags with you, you are a target. Put stuff in your trunk you will get broken into. For a lot of people it is easier to shop on line. Maybe i dont have to go down to that store and park and possibly be broken into and have it shipped home. This is a battle for him. Originally from canada. At the end of the day i am hopeful, on my break i will go for a walk in Golden Gate Park. Beautiful, i am reminded why i love San Francisco. Then i see a broken car window and i get frustrated again. Reporter for now he is committed to his work. Selling shoes while cautioning customers about the challenges out there as he clings to hope that the city he cherishes will, once again, find itself way. The supervisor made recommendations about what the city can do to combat car smash and grabs. So, they include a citywide Marketing Campaign to encourage people not to leave anything valuable in their cars. More signs and Text Messages and ambassadors at tourist hot spots. So, all of this advice you may of heard before. One resident told the supervisors today he has been noticing a new trend. He is trying to educate tourists about it. I am like hey, you know how your wheel is curved, you get a ticket that is one of the trends they look down the aisle, they see no wheels curbed that is a car they are going after. Dont forget to curb your wheels. Now, to the east bay. Two people are dead including the suspected gunman after a shooting at the toyota of Berkeley Service center that is actually in albany. It all started around 11 15 this morning and the gunman walked into the dealership and shot and killed a Woman Working at the service center. The police responded. Gunfire was exchanged between the officers and the suspect. They made entry into the building and shots were fired. Investigators from all three agencies are on scene and they are actively investigating what occurred. The suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. No word tonight if an officer shot him or if it was selfinflicted. We know that the female victim was killed before the Police Arrived on the scene. The same grant combating retail theft that oakland city officials failed to meet the deadline to apply for the city of vallejo did meet the deadline but they were turned down. Here are stats in the city according to the Police Department, commercial burglary is up 3 over the last year and vehicle thefts up 15 . Vallejo city manager says funds from the Grant Program could of helped and the city is currently dealing with a Police Staffing shortage. Last week the Police Department announced it will no longer be responding to certain house alarm calls. While vallejos Grant Application was declined San Francisco received 15 million. As you know, oakland received 0. They missed the deadline. California officials have a new plan to stop the nations top insurers from leaving the wildfireprone state. Companies will be allowed to consider Climate Risks when setting their prices. Unlike other states, california there is strict regulations on how insurers can price policies. But now, the state will write new rules allowing insurers to look to the future when setting their rates. Big tourist attraction in San Franciscos Golden Gate Park could be on the move. Where it may be headed. And, their species endangered but they are thriving on a California College campus. The lessons these foxes can teach us about Climate Change. You didntt choose cat alallergies. Your h hairline. Or thahat thing whwhere your k knee just gives s out for nono reason. But. You cacan choose your d doctor who o will care e for alall the thinings you u didnt chohoose. Kaiser perermanente fofor all thatat is you. In tonights project earth. One report reveals up to a million species are threatened with extension. Now, a new stanford analysis warns it is worse than that. Entire groups of animals are vanishing. In california, a small endangered fox is teaching us a lesson not to give up. Early in the morning as the sunrises at Cal State University bakersfield it is quiet. A few folks out walking. When nightfalls. It gets a little wild. Researchers puncture a can of cat food. Overnight, a camera records the action . The skunks and the possums are no surprise but these guys are. The fox, they are an endangered species. I think we were all surprised to see them doing so well just in the urban areas. State biologist said since the late 60s the number of foxes have dramatically declined in part due to habitat loss. Now, Climate Change threatens them even more. But, as you can see on this video, the foxes are multiplying like crazy. It seems like they really like school campuses. For better or for worse csub our campus seems to be a little kit fox factory. Reporter a conservation biologist at the university the scientist and the team made an eyeopening discovery. The kit fox is sharing bureau space burrow space the ground squirrel it is surprising when you hear ground squirrels on campus we have evidence using kit fox burrows. There are cats that are using them. Possums, raccoons and skunks t is crazy cool. The number of squirrels exploded and they are ripping up the landscape. The plan left students fuming. They did not really know which were squirrel bins or fox pens we are the only universities that have them that live on it. Reporter these biologist students are charter members of the san joaquin kit fox society. On campus the society gathered 2,000 signatures to stop the fumigation. The University Since discontinued the program and proclaimed the unwavering support for the endangered fox it is exciting. It is not doom and gloom it is, wow, we can do a lot. Biodiversity is the greatest weapon to fight Climate Change t. Is home to 70 denies with 37 foxes at last count. There is hope that if we do, if we do the right thing now and we Work Together we can make a difference. Dr. Hall is inspired to see the next generation get involved the decisions we make now are not decisions that we have to live with they are decisions that the next generation has to live with. As we all try to out fox the impacts of a warming planet. The university is forming an eco system counter to bolster the efforts on the campus. For more information on the kit fox and the universitys response, you can go to our website. Fascinating story, i learned a lot there. Going to learn a lot from you now in the next couple of minutes thinking about recruiting people for a council here. Kpix fox, no, Something Like that. We would go with different branding no. Yes. The smoke is the top story. Yes, smoke. You have been talking about that and teasing saturday and a chance for rain. Saturday, the air improves, then, monday, a chance of rain. Here is what is going on with the smoke and why we got hit as bad as we did. This afternoons highresolution that is the plume of smoke responsible for all of this. Coming off of the smith river complex. Burning up there for months. Look at what happens to it. See how it goes down the coast there . It is like it is getting corraled. And then driven down the freeway. If we visualize it differently i will show you what the winds have been doing. You can see what is going on. Strong northwesterly winds on the coast. The deep slades of purple, getting the strongest. That is why they were hit like this. Once the smoke is brought down here, you see the flow. Coming into the bay every day. That is why we were seeing the air go downhill once again over the last two hours at the golden gate. That is when the flow picks up. The fog, it starts to come in. The winds are noticeable. That is why we are hit so hard. Look at what happens over the next two days. The wind is going to die down. It will be replaced by much stronger westerlies out here. Going to take the smoke plume, watch it from now through saturday. Eventually it gets blown out from the east. That is why saturday is the tease ahead to the good news the air quality will improve then. Lets take a look at a chance of rain. Friday, tomorrow night. It is the start of fall. The equinox going to happen before midnight tomorrow. Right on queue heading into monday look at what is coming out of the pacific. That is a goodlooking storm. That is where it is on sunday. Lets skip ahead. We will lose a little resolution to go longrange and and in for a closer look. Here is the best visualization for how the rain is likely to hold together and make it to our neck of the woods right here. This is now monday morning. That looks impressive. It falls apart. What we do get is a southern tail end right here. So, now we are taking a look ahead towards monday evening. That is where we get a little bit of rain. This is exactly what the early systems of fall look like around here. You just get the southern tail of it. I dont want to tease too far downtheline. There are three more like coming after this one in the longrange forecast. None of them this far south. The next two come close. It is a good sign. We are starting to see the atmosphere to fall. It looks like it wants to at least stay with the possibility that it rains here that time of the year. Even though it will not be a big rainmaker for us, we will look at it with more details in just a second. Where the it matters, where it starts the conversation. We are about to get two inches of rain on that. So, i dont know it puts the fire out completely. It will help in any case. It is going to be the end of the smoke plume. So, once we clear out on saturday then the rain comes on sunday into monday and stops the smoke and at least from that one we dont have to be concerned about more smoke. It will be better around here. Does not mean there will not be another fire. That one, good news. In terms of the rain here at home. 59th of an inch of rain for santa rosa. Maybe. That is it. Not much farther south. Tomorrows day time highs, air quality. Just like today. That is when we got first alert for tomorrow. Another air quality advisory tomorrow. Everything you are doing to go easy on yourself have to do it for one more day. Next chance of rain, see it, monday, you are not getting out of the 60s. San jose you may notice clouds on monday. No rain in the forecast. Inland east bay, a chance, not much. If you are going to get rain at the coast it will be north of the golden gate. Back to you. All right, thank you very much.
