People want these lights to feel comfortable, but thieves are making it difficult. Remembering our history, remembering the survivors and remembering those who perished is an incredible way for us to remember who we are as a city, how resilient we are as a city as we continue to move forward today. A day of reflection. 118 years since San Franciscos great earthquake of 1906. Now its my turn to step up. And i know with our staff and our team, we all have each others back and were excited about doing what we do, which is to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Big shoes to fill. Speaking of sweet. This is going to be a gorgeous day here in the bay. You can already see it right there as the sun is getting set to rise here. Jessica, and what kind of temperatures are we talking about . Oh, its another day of above average temperatures here in the bay area. Something to look forward to especially as we head into the afternoon hours. So with that in mind, lets actually dive into our weather headlines and waking up and heading out the door, its mostly clear for us this morning. We had a little bit of patchy fog in the overnight hours. Well just see some passing clouds throughout the forecast today and tomorrow. And highs are remaining above average. So lets dive over to the map real fast and then go back. Rest of the weather headlines. Today in the 60s this afternoon near San Francisco. 70s up into wine country. And santa rosa. Stretching all the way over into antioch and 80s this afternoon. And heres our live look down into the Santa Clara Valley. And a mix of sun and clouds already right now. And later today, were going to see a similar trend but at least our daytime highs are going to hit the 80s near san jose. So now that we have that covered lets go right back to the monitor and lets talk about the last weather headline. Which is some changes as we head into next week. And its not until late next week and heres whats going on. Hooking at the longrange models, days eight to 14, so just a little bit further than our 7 day model that you will see coming up in a bit. There is a chance of showers in the forecast for us and im going to time that out for you coming up in just a bit because actually better yet. Let me show you. The next seven days were seeing daytime highs still above average. Were dealing with a lot of warmth in the forecast for us. But we cool down quick as we head into next week. By around wednesday, 80s turning into 60s. And this is in our inland areas. Meaning thats one of the warmest spots. If you see the bay area forecast closer to San Francisco and over into oakland, a lot cooler weather is just off in the distance and thats going to be the next chance that we could see some showers in the forecast. Moreen that in a bit. For now over to you, g. Lets talk about the roadways right now as you get ready to hop on some of our freeways and bridges. We are already tracking brake lights over at the bay bridge. Westbound you can see its getting a little bit busy for commuters heading into San Francisco this morning. But that and that trouble spot in the Altamont Pass are really the only things we kind of have brewing right now out on the roadways. Westbound 580 at grant line. Theres a crash there as well. So its kind of the headlines overall everything looks pretty clear just like the nimitz right here. No delays in both directions. Live cameras at oakland. News of a Deadly Police shooting and happened at a home on 16th and adeline streets in west oakland. The suspect shot dead duringen arrest. The officers involved from sacramento Law Enforcement. So heres what we know at this hour. Oakland police say they were at a home to help arrest a homicide suspect. They say a man came out pointing a gun and then police fired. This has been an active scene as you can see in the video that weve acquired before sunup in fact. Were working to get the details for your community. But for now, the officers involved are on customary administrative leave. Across bridge now to San Francisco. Where District Attorney Brooke Jenkins remembers this well. And shes got a request for many of you this morning who might have been trapped in the protest. If you are one of the hundreds who were stuck on the Golden Gate Bridge during mondays protest, you need to file a report she says with the california highway patrol. Why . Well, the da says you could have been the victim of false imprisonment. And your story has to be on record with the chp. Jenkins is eyeing 26 arrested during the protest that shut down the bridge for hours in both directions. But she says she needs to see reports filed to consider those charges. Now we know you hearing that about the Golden Gate Bridge. And you are wondering, well, what about over on the 880 . Also stuck because of the protests that shut down 2880 for hours. Theres a similar theme here to talk about from the da in the east bay. Pamela price. Says she needs more information from the chp before any of us will know the fates of the 12 people arrested during that protest that happened same day as the Golden Gate Bridge protest. In fact, price expressed support for the right to protest, in a statement but also said Public Safety should never be compromised. We also know you are wanting to know about this. A followup to the protest that happened at google headquarters. This was in the form of a live stream sitin that led to arrests and google telling us they fired all 28 workers that led about a dozen employees to protest inside offices not only here in the bay but also in new york. The San Francisco protests like we said was streamed live. The employees sat in protest of googles cloud project nimbus contract with the israeli government. Now Police Arrested nine total on charges of trespassing in that case. Nicole . Its time now for a look at this mornings other top stories. City leaders and First Responders gathered on Market Street to commemorate 118 years since the great earthquake of San Francisco. We were there as historians recounted memories of the quake and the harrowing efforts to save anyone and everyone and then the devastating fires that came after the shaking. It took them days to put them all out. Right now, part two of the commemoration is under way. The golden fire hydrant at dolores park is being repainted the one that helped fight all the flames. Were going to have a live report from the ceremony coming up. Jury selection is set to continue today in former president Donald Trumps criminal trial in new york. Trump is accused of falsifying documents to hide a money payment for an alleged affair with adult film actress stormy daniels. Tour turmoil for House Republicans and Senate Democrats just voted down articles of impeachment against Homeland Security secretary alejandro mayorkas. Slamming the move as a political stunt. Now embattled House Speaker mike johnson is setting up a vote on separate bills to fund aid for ukraine and israel despite objections from members of his own party. G . The light poles look pretty unrational. Green and over about 100 years old. Unremarkable and as Katie Nielsen shows us they are so desperate for copper some thieves are actually kicking them out of the ground as its creating a big problem for the city. Reporter Michael Stadler lives only a few blocks from lake merritt and works from home most of the time. Which is why he comes down to the lake sometimes twice a day. Sunshine, a little bit of nature and then the people and i really like being around the people and it makes me feel like just kind of part of the community. Reporter but recently he and others who regularly walk or run around the lake have noticed some of the light posts and string lights are missing. I think i would feel more comfortable if the lights were up and also my wife likes to run really early in the morning. I think that does concern me more. So im generally more concerned about her. Lighted spaces always seem safer. Dark spaces just seem like places you can get away with stuff more. Reporter there are 126 lamp posts holding up more than 4,000 string lights that wrap around the more than three mile lake. They were first installed in 1925 and are affectionately called the necklace of lights. The lake is our crown jewel and i remember when they put up the lights and it was so beautiful and i love driving by it. And its its magical. Reporter maureen molmen is a volunteer with the lake merritt breakfast club, a Community Group that cares for the lake and the necklace of lights. I took great pride in them. And then when i started noticing they were down, i was very traumatized. Yep. Reporter Oakland Public Works employees were out at the lake putting up temporary poles and lights. The city says a total of ten original poles are damaged or missing. And some of the poles came down when trees fell on the lights during recent storms. Others were vandalized, cut off at the base and wires have been ripped out or damaged from 34 curb electrical boxes, possibly to steal the copper. Well, in order to replace them the city has to have them custom made at a price of about 15,000 apiece. Time now 6 09. Rescuing a pooch. The Animal Rescue you wont want to miss in San Francisco. And the violence weve seen in our San Francisco jails raising concerns. Were asking a rough day on the trail for a pup in San Francisco who went over the side of a cliff and needed to be rescued. This happened last night at fort funston. The Fire Department says that two dogs fell off a cliff and one of them got back up okay. But the other dog a Belgian Malinois named otis needed a rescue team to help him out. Well crews were able to get him into a special harness and justas the sun was setting here they were able to hoist him up to the side of the cliff and back the safety. Thankfully everyone is okay and jess, you have another Animal Rescue overseas. Absolutely. Check this out. It was a cat hanging on for dear life. He was clinging on to the car door during a flash flooding that happened in dubai recently. But video showed Police Pulling up in a boat bringing the cat to safety. Dubai was hit by a rare storm. The usual hot and dry climate area. As you take a look at whats going on for us back here in the states, us back here locally, weve been dealing with some active weather this week too. Back here in the bay, gosh, its been pleasant for us. Taking a look at our dry conditions that weve had so far this week. This has been a really big treat considering the fact were still above average for the rainfall season so far. But heading into the next seven days theres a slight chance of showers next wednesday but as of now thats still very light and if anything, it would be thenorth bay to get hit first. But its also worth noting that were keeping a close eye on on the longrange models because its been a beautiful dry week for us here in the bay. The forecast for today in just a minute but looking at the next 8 to 14 days, we could see some wetter than normal conditions throughout the state of california. So we are going to keep a close eye on that but head right back into the forecast for us today and drop the monotar. A mix of sun and clouds just like yesterday and upper 60s near San Francisco and butting us about five degrees above average there. Once we make our way off into areas like vallejo and concord, were now talking about upper 70s and lower 80s. Its a stunning day to get out there to get some fresh air, the pollen count is relatively high still. That will be the case as we heainto the next three days. Hold on tight to 70s but kind of drop off from the 80s at least into the weekend forecast. In our inland areas, so were talking about concord and antioch and all the way up into wine country. Flirting with the 70s and the 80s until around next tuesday. Thats when we drop down to the 60s. A cold front at that point will move its wait in and thats going to bring us some cooler weather. Still partly cloudy skies like what weve seen so far. But to add to that theres a light chance of showers for the north bay friends on wednesdays forecast. More on that in a bit. For now over to you, g. All right. Thank you. Lets talk about the morning commute. And we are already starting to see the brake lights stack up a live look at the nimitz freeway and you can see actually here it looks pretty good. Another map and show you some brake lights there you go. Westbound 580 right at grant line road thats the ride into the Altamont Pass, thats a pretty busy commute this morning coming out of tracy into the Altamont Pass. We typically see delays and brake lights through there. But when theres a crash, that definitely adds to a busier than normal commute. For supercommuters, typically making more than an hour and a half for their drive. All right, westbound 80 actually doing okay for the most part. If you are coming out of hercules into richmond you will be tapping the brake lights a little bit but the rest of the way no brake lights until you get to this point. And good morning, everybody making that ride across the bay bridge toll plaza. Thats definitely starting to get a little bit busy here with those metering lights officially on this morning. They were turned on at about 5 30. So a little slow there. But just noticing on the approaches if you are taking 880 northbound to the bay bridge into the maze or westbound 5890, thats still looking pretty good. And then if you are headed past berkeley through emeryville. Were not seeing a lot of brake lights or issues through there. So thats a look the morning drive. San francisco Law Enforcement has quite a plate in front of them from the lockdown at two county jails to todays commemoration of the harrowing 1906 earthquake. Joining us in studio this morning to talk about all of this and more is San Francisco sheriff paul miyamoto. Welcome so great to have you in studio. Good morning. Always happy to be here. So we know its been a busy morning for you. And we did see a little glimpse of you in the coverage of ceremonies this morning batlets talk about the lockdowns behind bars and as many asking this were starting to see in the bay area in general. There a larger problem here that were not seeing. I think part of it is that we moved on from the pandemic and gotten into normalcy in the jails, just as much as we have in the community, theres a reflection of that in the behaviors that weve seen. Weve had an increase . Violence against our people and completely focused on our people and the lockdowns are a way in the system in which we kind of calm things down and bring things back together and have the opportunity to investigate in term of our housing units. And move on there from to keep people safe. Low Staffing Levels an issue when it comes to this . Low Staffing Levels are definitely a challenge for us. But most of these attacks and usually when deputies are assaulted its a oneonone thing. Theyre targeting deputies, theyre targeting individuals oneonone. Some of these assaults have occurred with other deputies present as well and other staff. Our response times in the jails in terms of getting more help to people when these happen are still there. Its not as many people but theres always help on the way. Its low staffing and then long shifts. We did report that even if you have those there, there may not be at their best in those environments. Because theyre working those overtime hours. Absolutely. Thats a very big challenge for us right now. Were down close to 200 deputies in the entire system. Were down to about 75 staffing. And each division. So its very challenging for us to get people up to a level in which they feel comfortable. Because we are all human and we get tired working the long hours. We know that. Right . Yes. So lets pivot to the event this morning honoring those who died during that 1906 earthquake here. And we were just at Lottas Fountain as were you on Market Street and this was the Meeting Point for so many San Francisco residents during that time. How significant is this for First Responders at that time . I think its very important to recogn
