And the numbers out there for the most part, low to mid60s. 62 in that view for sa jose. Its 56 in santa rosa right now so thats our one coo spot. Just to show you how widespread the gray is, its th entire bay waking up to it. And by the time we get to late morning it will have melted bac so that were looking at more sunshine than anything else. That gets us into the 2 00 and3 00 hour today and with tha daytime highs climb to pretty much right where they were yesterday. And that pretty much places most locations in the lo 80s. Heres a good example. San jose, you were 82 yesterday. Yo are going to 82 today. Its cooler over the weekend. Number will go down a few degrees and by the time we get to monday in fact you will be about five degrees cooler. Not a drastic cold snap but it is a subtle cooling trend. And even if thats what it looks like for san jose, everybody is doing th same thing. And ill show you what it looks like for your par of the bay coming up in the complete forecast. Just a few minutes from now. Gianna over t you. All right, thank you. Good morning. Lets take a look at the roadways. If you are gettin up early hopping on bay bridge few people doing the same thing but its moving along pretty nicely. In fact, happy friday. Friday light on the freeways so far, so good. Hopefully it stay that way. Were not seeing too many issues out there getting a bit of an overview of the drive here along 880 and 580 and san Leandro Hayward everything is moving along nicely. And across the bay if you are commuting through the peninsula, no delay along 101 or 280. Headed into San Francisco, a nice pace ther as well. But dont forget theres still a closure in effect on howard between 3rd an 4th because of dreamforce. Well, all this week, weve been focusing on the future of technology and its impact in th bay area. We started with dreamforce in San Francisco and a focus on Artificial Intelligence. So one of the mos intriguing ways that technology is being used now is increasing safety on Public Transit. Shawn chitnis is live in san francisc with the look at one bay area companys plan to make your commute safer and make the job of bus drivers a little bit easier. Reporter hey gianna, good morning. Yeah, we certainly kno that ridership for Public Transit is down compared to before the pandemic. But we als know of new trends and challenges that are getting in the way. Take for example the typical delivery truck or even ride share using up space along the curb. One more challenge fo buses, buses specifically. San francisco based hayden ai has developed the technology to try and make Public Transit safer for everyone. Chris carson stil remembers the moment that helpe to inspire the mission of hayde ai. I was inside inner sunset in San Francisco. Riding a transit bus. And in the past i was very focused on understanding driver behavior. Reporter while on knew knee that day, he realized the drive had to keep pushing a button to capture photos showing cars tha were not parked legally. I thought too myself that we could start to automate that. Reporter and hayden ai has done just that. Allowing the bu driver to focus on their job an help transit agencies get bette at enforcement. As well as collect more data related to safety. If you were trying to monito parking from across the city, you can imagine you were probably need an army of human beings to monitor that. Reporter but with artificia intelligence, the technology knows based on gps that certain sections of the road are designated bus lanes. And cars shouldnt be parked there. Theres no technology thats inherently bad or good. Its ho you apply the technology. Reporter we got a chance to see how it works with one of hayden ais vans that replicate the conditions of a bus. As we drove around sf, the technology is constantly checking to see i a car is in the right spot. In our case, we are using ai for public good. Improving Transit Bus Services for millions of riders already. Reporter according to hayde ai, the software is helping buses move around stays faster and ridership is up, and on tim departures are increasing. Part of our mission is also to help give tools to transit agencies that theyve never had in the past. So they can find ways to improve the ridership experience. Reporter and so here again you can see the technology on this van. To try and replicate what happens for buses. The company is currently working with transit agencies in new york and dc. They also have som pilot programs down in Southern California and they could some day soon be here in the bay area. Guys, back to you. All right, shawn thank you. You know, this is really fascinating because we have so many options here for Public Transit which is one of the great things ax living in the bay area. You can get around very easily. But when you are driving down the roadways and you are seeing cars driving in the bus lanes or stopping there because theyre running in and out of a store, or a business, it really causes a lot of problems for Public Transit. Yeah and you know theres such a science to Public Transit. This morning i was doing some research and you know, this Ai Technology could make it so we all get to where we are going smoother and also cut down on Carbon Emissions as well. Simplify things. Thats why were putting so much money into Public Transit. Of course we with global warmin want to make sure were taking care of the environment. But 500 million for the bus lanes . Thats a significant chunk of change to make sure we keep Public Transit running smoothly shes the traffic expert, still ahead this morning this is an inexcusable misse opportunity. The town known as the motor city hitting the brakes in a history making move you can see them hitting the pavement this morning. Auto workers walking off the job. So the big bosses at the big three American Automakers are deadlocked with the United Auto Workers union. Not a massive walkoff just yet. But the unite Auto Workers Union is staging a series of strikes at small number of factories. So their big question is, is this a warning shot of a bigger strike looming . Jarred hill has more. Reporter for the first time ever, the United Auto Workers began a strike against the big three automakers at the same time. The money is there. The caus is righteous. The world is watching. In the uaw, its read to stand up. This is our defining moment. [ chanting ] reporter the Union Contract with ford, General Motors and stellantis expired just before midnight triggering the first round of walkouts at three factories. A gm plant in missouri, a stellantis plant in ohio and a ford plant in michigan. We put everything back in place and we just walked out. Reporter production operato Bianca Harris found out her plant would strike just before her lunch break. We want to be able to provid longterm for her families. I was pretty honored to becalled upon to strike first. Reporter the three automakers are offering about half the raise. Also on the wis list a 3 the hour workweek and the return of pensions. Nonstarters for the car companies. The union also wants phase out concessions made in 2008 when car makers teetered o the verge of collapse 26789 big three have been on a big roll o profits over the past decade totalling more than 20 billion this year alone. Its a big deal for us. We need to get compensated. Reporter ford, gm and stellantis all put out statements overnight, saying they were disappointed with the strike, while vowing to continu working toward a fair agreement so right now the United Auto Workers president saying he doe not expect talks to come back today. Maybe tomorrow. Nicole . All right, time now for a look at this mornings other to stories. Federal grand jury indicted hunter biden on charge related to his purchase of a firearm that was back in 2018 when he was a drug user. At tha time, the president s son is accused of lying about his drug use on a federal gun form and t a firearms dealer. A third coun claims he knowingly possessed a firearm while on drugs. Only tw months after the plea deal brea down. His lawyer accused the special counsel of bending to political pressure. Up and down the north atlantic coast,. Parts of new england and canada are preparing for hurricane lee. The category 1 storm is heading their way and the National Weather service is expecting it to stay a large an dangerous cyclone as it continues to make its way up north. The storm is expected to make landfall over the weekend. And you know, i really wish tha we had an expert here who could explain the impact of this stor as weve been tracking it. Gosh, wouldnt that be so nice . Do we know someone . I think his name rhymes with darren peck. Happy to be here to fill tha role for you this morning. Theres good news on lee. I mean this storm looked so menacing just about five days ago. Granted, this is still a serious situation because its category 1 hurricane but it poses no direct threat to the eastern seaboard of the u. S. No in terms of a direct landfall. It will get a bit wavy and wind but if you look at the storm no and we put a forecast track on this. The direction from here i pretty much going directly to the north. So that means we still have to watch this very closely. And if you look at the times on there, once weve gotten past about saturday afternoon, its no longer even hurricane. And it comes on shor as a strong area of low pressure. So a much better stor than it looked like it could have been about five, six days ago. Lets come back home. Thats the view from Treasure Island looking back at the city its gray here but its gray everywhere. We can use every camera across the bay this morning and show that were all waking up to the marine layer. San jose, thats you. Weeing up to the gray skies. Thats the view from the top of mount diablo and looking out over walnut creek. The bright lights there are actually walnut creek and its a gray start there as well. Heres how long it takes for the clouds to go away. By the way its thick enough well probably get a little mist out of this. In the coast or the hills whether its peninsula or east bay hills you might get light mist out of it this morning. Thats how thick the marine layer is this morning. You can see its still around around 10 00 this morning. But noon, 1 00, it melts back and just the immediate city. And with the temperatures underneat that, this also is almost right on the mark for average for thi time of year. Its going to be very much like yesterday. Theres a cooldown coming. But you are going to notice that cooldown tomorrow. Not so much today. Today, maybe you are lik a degree or two cooler than you were yesterday. So you will be in the mid 80s for the inland valleys of the east bay and santa rosa is 83 and well do a lot of mid 70s for the east bay shore. It may look a little haz with those clear skies today. There is a little bit of smoke that is still drifting our way from those wildfires that areburning on that fornorthwest corner of the state. If anythin just a little hazy but the air quality sensors for the most part theyre registering good t moderate and not a significant concern in that sense. Lets ge into the 7 day forecast and il show you. San francisco and oakland your numbers dont change much from today. But north bay valleys and south bay valleys theres the cooldown. San jose you will be in the upper 70s by monday and then back up to around 80 by next week. And for the inland east bay communities you will go fro the mid 80s today down to 79 by sunday. Gianna, over to you. All right, thank you. Its pretty easy for now. Its just the advantage of waking up earl right . Not a lot of traffic to deal with and its friday. Also friends, so happy friday. And hopefully you got some fun plan for the weekend. But a if you are planning to start your day taking that ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, so far, so good. In fact, traffic is movin along really nicely. Light conditions for anyone making that ride out of marin county a you head over into the city. No a lot of reports of fog through there. So visibility seems to b aok for now. Definitely watch that this morning. Most of the bay area bridges are kind of th same story. Off to a really nic start at the bay bridge. Moving along pretty nicely as you head into San Francisco. No metering lights just yet. But still migh be a little bit busy in and around the city i know dreamforce wrapped up yesterday but that closure is still in effect on howard in San Francisco between 3rd and 4th. So its still going to be prett congested at least on the roadways and surface streets in and around San Francisco near moscone center. Just keep that in mind. But look at all this good news here a lot of nice conditions along the peninsula. No delays along 101. Traffic is nice there and looks pretty clear as you head in and out of oakland along 880. Reed . All right, thank you. You know, this week the world has been watching. The bay area. As dreamforce brought in thousands of out of towners to see whethe headlines and videos like this really ring true about who we all are. One of the big headlines is retail theft and s new this morning, word that the state of california will throw some money at the problem. Wer talking about more than a quarter of a billion dollars to supercharge the fight against situations like this. Retail crime. Well, the money is there cities big and small jumped to get a piece of the money. But what happened . Well, there is hope that scenes like this in San Francisco will become a thing of the past, in fact, thi is video all too common these days. A smashed car on portola drive. Police got more than 15 million from the state to try t keep this from happening. Small cities got the money and in fac some cities less than 18,000 people in like colinda got the money. Same with other cities like dell know. Big and small. Got the cash. So why didnt oakland get a dime . Well d city of oakland missed the deadline to apply for the money. And as Andrea Nakano is about to show you, some of the critics say this is embarrassing. Reporter here at the Community Garden in west oakland, seneca scott started a Grassroots Movement to bring safety back to the town. He founded neighbors together oakland. When he heard that soa land missed out on millions of dollars to combat retail theft, he was extremely disappointed. Everyone else turned in thei homework on time. When it goats to oakland the excuse is metaphorically the dog ate our homework. Reporter the city of oaklan missed a july 7th deadline saying the economic and Work Force Development department failed to submit documents in time. No joking matter. We are in very, very dangerous and precarious time for oakland neighbors and businesses. Publi safety is far and away number one issue and to miss something that would bring millions of dollars at a time when we have budget deficit of over 300 million, this is an inexcusable missed opportunity. Reporter in a statement the city says obviously this outcom is unacceptable. The city and department are reviewing everything that happened to ensure it does not happen again and will take appropriate action. This news comes as many Business Owners like robbie hav been left frustrated by the increase in crime. His 7eleven store was hit twice ju
