Know, kind of educate the traveling public. Thats the sale for a proposed name change at oaklands main airport, but it appears to be potentially, potentially diverting traffic. Protectors of the San Francisco brand want to keep the plan grounded. Your chance to sound off, ahead. I cant express the joy that im feeling in knowing that im getting to talk to you. Its the moment our First Responders dedicate their life to. Seeing others live past injury and trauma. Ahead, share in the emotional moment during a rescue reunion in livermore. Just felt like maybe i would, you know, kind of just keel over on the bench. But, you know, i mean, i just you know, see, because i love it. I love it. I love it. A morning master class in excellence and leadership. How loving your job helps to lift everybody around you. Thanks coach, for the wins and the lessons. And from one inspiration in sports to another. A baseball trailblazer and a familiar face returning to the bay in oakland. Good morning, everybody. Nice to have you with us as we celebrate Tara Vanderveer and other powerhouse women in sports. Even weve got a powerhouse woman climbing the eiffel tower by a rope. Amazing. Its amazing and good morning, everybody. Reed cowan, Nicole Zaloumis here, you know just when i thought the Little League baseball days would be over this year with my 12yearold son, im seeing that story and im like my 5yearold kelsey. Theres hope girl. Oh my goodnessment okay. A live look outside on this thursday morning. And jessica, theres hope for a Beautiful Day today. Weve had a string of Beautiful Days here in the bay area. But unfortunately, its not doing to last. Right . No. Its coming to an end as we head into the next couple of days and another cold front around the corner bringing in some chilly conditions for the weekend. But before we get to that, the bad news, quote unquote, lets enjoy what we have this morning. Were waking up to a beautiful sunrise right now down into the santa clara valley. I want to show you our daytime highs later into this afternoon. Were going to be sitting at 80 degrees today near san jose. 81 in livermore and beautiful 80s stretching off into the east bay. This is day two of the same forecast and all the way up into San Francisco, a little bit cooler compared to yesterday there. 67 this afternoon. That puts us about four degrees above average and 76 in the santa rosa, what a nice day for us heading into this afternoon. 12 degrees above average near concord and san jose. Its interesting as we take a look at the next couple of days were talking about that cold front and notice how temperatures dip quick as we head into our saturday forecast. This is just san jose. Punt painting a really good picture what all of us are going to experience as we head into the weekend forecast and then a gradual warmup next week. But as temperatures start to dip, interestingly enough rain chances start to increase. Thats what happens when low pressure moves its way in from offshore, we see cooler conditions and gustier conditions too and of course the splash of showers thats going to move in right around the corner for us. Starting late friday night lasting all throughout our saturday forecast. And then tapering off as we head into sunday. So were going to break apart that forecast coming up in just a bit. Like i said, today is a Beautiful Day to get out there and get some fresh air, its dry this afternoon and expecting 80s in the inland areas and upper 60s and lower 70s along the peninsula and coast a great day to get out there and get some fresh air. The pollen count is better now too. More on the rain and how much you can expect coming up in just a bit. For now over to you in nicole. The bay area bridges are a massive part of the commute to work. We take a look at the bay bridge and as you can see, their metering lights are now on. Seeing that buildup just after the toll plaza. As you come in from emeryville and oakland. Not too bad though making that drive over in San Francisco. How about a look at the Golden Gate Bridge . A few more cars coming in from southbound 101. A little slow in sausalito as you approach. But overall, still in the green. Not too bad in san mateo. Usually this is a little bit more congested. So Clear Conditions in both directions. Yeah, were following the breaking news out of San Joaquin County. Look at this. Firefighters responding to a massive fire. This is near tracy. The Officials Say at least twothirds of the gma palette recycling Corporation Yard is burning. Started just before 2 00 in the morning so this thing has been going for four hours and look at that. Even with those boom trucks shooting the water down, the fire still rages and smoke seen reportedly for at least 19 well, at least several miles. And then homes have been evacuated as well. Were almost in 10, 20 range of homes that have been evacuated. Also sort of to position you as to whats going on there, theres a School Across the street. Word is right now that theres some discussion whether that school will even open this morning. Fire crews are saying theres no water supply in the area so theyre having to shuttle water in. Which is making that battle even more difficult and maybe why its been going on for four hours. So this is an active story and breaking news story. And well keep you updated as we hear more. We know a lot of you who live in the area want to get some answers. Now to that story that has travelers and tourists and locals talking. Okay. So what do you think of this . Should oaklands airport add San Francisco bay to its name . Thats going to be decided by the Oakland Airport commission today. As opposition across the bay in San Francisco continues to mount and get stronger. Bosses at the port of oakland want the name change to boost travelers. They say many travelers who are unfamiliar with our region fly into sfo even if their destination is across the bay bridge over to the east bay. But the San Francisco City Attorney wants to ground oaklands plans say sending a strong letter in opposition and in fact threatening to sue the argument there that the change violates trademark on San Franciscos airport. And by the way, the opposition mounts. The San Mateo County board of supervisors, they also voted to oppose. So one of the arguments is that travelers will be confused so we went to x and wed like to have Community Conversation and heres what you are saying. Overwhelming number of you in the poll say yes, the change would be confusing to travelers. In the next half hour were live talking to those travelers in oakland and then remember this. At 7 00 over on pix 44 cable 12, well continue this Community Conversation. Giving you a voice on this issue in our people are talking segment. Okay so while this plays out over at sfo theres a new story with a headline. Hundreds of United Airlines flight attendants, they are going to rally and demand that the airline deliver a new contract. They say its just time to get the job done. Apparently negotiations have dragged on for more than two years and they want more money and they want improved working conditions and theyre digging in their heels and in fact united says theyre working right now with the union to reach an agreement but much to watch there as well. Well, update now to the meeting of our states top education bosses. This morning, we can tell you cal graduate rich lyons is uc berkeley next chancellor. The top priority of student safety on and offcampus as a major item. First responders are true heroes among us. One east bay man is showing gratitude to the men who saved his life. He told our Andrea Nakano how these heroes gave him a Second Chance. Reporter there were hugs and tears at falck headquarters in livermore, a truly emotional moment for paramedic dave raymond. Important for me to come back to you guys. Reporter this was the first time a patient stopped by to say thank you. Ive been in this job for 32 years and guess what . You are the first. To be able to have that opportunity to say that. I cant express the joy that im feeling. In knowing that im getting to talk to you. Yeah, appreciate it. Reporter raymond and emt jason vera helped save jeff herringtons life roughly five months ago. The 53yearold went into cardiac arrest and came very close to leaving his wife and two kids just 12 and 13 behind. I was dead for 20 minutes and i came back. They dont get gratitude. They dont get it enough. And and i recognize that and i needed to be here to thank them. Reporter herrington is a former b. A. R. T. Police officer. He knew he had a heart condition, but admits he didnt take the best care of his health. But after getting a Second Chance to watch his kids grow up, hes not taking anything for granted anymore. Their efforts, you know, mean something to me. And their efforts means that im taking full advantage of the moment. That my life spans going to be way longer than it would have been because im living better and just taking advantage of what the beautiful gift that they gave me from their hard work. Reporter as an exmilitary officer, dave raymond gave herrington a challenge coin as a symbol of the bond the men will share for the rest of their lives. Speechless. Grateful. And hope people learn that it takes a team. That were just part of it. Reporter that team gave one of the most valuable gifts of all. These First Responders will say its just part of their jobs. It doesnt make a difference. Who you are, what you believe in, the color of your skin. That doesnt matter. Were human. You know . Life is precious. Reporter but theyre real life heroes as they try to save one life at a time. Well t paramedics werent the only heroes that day. They told andrea jeffs wife helped them out by starting cpr herself. Its something she learned to do when she was a lifeguard and a skill they encourage everybody to pick up. 6 10 in the morning. Lessons in lifesaving and selfless service. You are going to neat an east bay man and hear why he stepped forward to help a total stranger and how doing the same could lift your life as well. And plus severe storms bearing down on the south. New vi you made a cow actually its a piggy bank. My inspiration to start saving. How about a more solid way to save . Im listening. Well, bmo helps get your savings habit into shape with a cash reward, every month you save. Both cash reward . And theres a cash bonus when you open a new Checking Account to get you started. Wow. Anything you cant do . mugs. Bmo get back to the breaking news out of San Joaquin County. Firefighters responding to a massive fire near tracy along grant line road. Officials say at least twothirds of the gma palette recycling Corporation Yard is on fire. You can see they are fighting it there. Next to the Railroad Tracks at thits four hour and 13 minutes since that call first came in. At least 19 nearby homes evacuated. Also in addition to that Railroad Crossing nearby, theres a school just across the street from that. No word if that school will be open this morning. Were asking. Pg e also letting us know that hundreds of customers in the area are without electricity because of the fire. No water supply in the area. So its just insult to injury over and over and over and were going in closer on the flames and you can see what theyre doing to that its really a lot of fuel. The palettes that were piled up there. They are now white hot in the heat of the flames. So far, fire crews are having to shuttle water in. Thats just making this even more difficult of a fight. So a huge story there. In San Joaquin County, near tracy, were understanding many of you are concerned about this. So where you are concerned soare we. Nicole . Well, reed, this is an all too familiar sight for a popular oakland doughnut shop. Just got robbed for a fourth time in this past year. This time, one of the suspects hopped over the counter at colonial doughnuts while another ripped out the Cash Register and a third swung around a golf club. This robbery happened on march 1st. The owner told us shes worried that she wont be able to staff her store if thieves keep targeting them. Damage from storms in the south in the face of heavy flooding and rains. We can tell you right now electricity is out for hundreds of thousands this morning all because of tornadoes. Some homes are a total loss and jess is joining us now. A major intersection of news and weather. Major damage in the wind, jess. So true. I mean check out this path of destruction from an ef1 tornado that left behind. This is actually over in slidell, louisiana. Wind speeds clocked in nearly 110 miles per hour. You can see how severe that damage to the homes really is. Now thankfully, the people were able to get out safely and quickly. And there havent been any reports of any deaths from that. Now at ef1 tornado struck the city of katy in texas. Businesses were destroyed and debris is still everywhere this morning. The National Weather service said that the wind speeds with this one got up to around 90 miles an hour. And that one didnt have much of a track. But the winds didnt just rip up infrastructure. Check out the coast waters just close to mobile, alabama. Intense winds and rain helping it rise on to the freeways and causeways and this route right here you are seeing on the screen, is actually interstate 10 connecting mobile and spanish fort. So lots of active weather throughout the south and we noticed that a lot this week. Because if you remember, when we were forecasting for the path of totality, we noticed there were a lot of active storms in the region. And we are still seeing the impacts from the storms today. Now back here in the bay area, we were dealing with High Pressure keeping us nice and dry this week. And thats what we were dealing with as that eclipse happened earlier this week. But we have some late week changes and thats going to come in pretty quick and new system moving in from offshore. And an area of low pressure bringing in cool weather and some gusty conditions and of course the rain too. Today were sitting in the 80s for our daytime highs with mostly sunny skies into this afternoon in our inland areas. Upper 60s along the coast. And the peninsula. Its going to be a great day for us today to get out there and do some Outdoor Activities and take the kids to the park. Before this area of low pressure moves in. But luckily this is an overnight system for the most part so many of us are just going to be sleeping through it. The first band of rain moves in just around 10 00, 11 00 friday night and it continues to sweep into the Sacramento Valley. And eventually up into the sierra as we wake up on saturday morning. Were actually going to get a little bit of a break just ahead just behind that first band of rain moving in from offshore. Now that center so it will bring in more unsettled weather into the saturday afternoon forecast giving us us close to around a half inch of rain on average in the bay but that system will die down in the sunday forecast and were left with dry skies right around the corner. Daytime highs today, theyre expected to hit the 60s near San Francisco. 70s into redwood city and 80s all the way off into the east bay. This is a beautiful forecast and its already beautiful this morning with clear skies and a beautiful sunrise down into the santa clara valley. With blue now its yellow and were going to continue to watch the sky really highlight in the afternoon hours today. Were also taking a live lookbehind me at the bay bridge. Clear conditions to start the day. Because were still dealing with light winds into the afternoon hours today. By friday, notice how the 80s in the inland areas drop down to the 60s just ahead of the cold front. Well continue to cool down in the low 50s into our saturday forecast. Luckily we warm up into next week with more sunshine around the corner. Nicole . All right, jessica, take a look at the roadways its getting a little slow for our usual areas. Over on southbound 880, between san lorenzo and union city, were starting to see those pockets of slow speeds. Earlier commuters dealt with an incident on the 238 connector ramp that was blocked due to an overturned big rig. So we cant say if this area of traffic is picking up due to that. Drivers are struggling with bumpertobumper traffic over at highway 4. A normal hotspot for those going towards concord where we continue to see a bit of sluggish conditions over on 680. Well, a special morning for so many in our country who know what its like to have a loved one need a lifesaving organ transplants. This morning we are celebrating people building bridges to life for the sick by becoming donors. Shawn chitnis now with the story of one man in the east bay who saw a need and stepped forward offering somebody else a thumbs up to life. I knew i had to do it. I knew i had to become an organ donor and i could not imagine anything more satisfying than getting to be an organ donor and enjoy it in life. Reporter luis mayen has worked for years at Donor Network west in san ramon. Theyre a federally recognized organization identifying organs available to help people in need around Northern California. I knew the need was there. I we all know the need is there. What really put me over the edge, what made me realize that i needed to do this, was getting more information about how safe it was.
